Hi there!

This topic aims for a very little aspect of this very little game. ;)

The superpowered machinery which bears a 2+ firepower, successfully receives & executes sustained fire order against a clear visual target, that happens to be out of Shadowfield.

The bonus gained here diminishes, as the shooting roll may become 1+, but the rule states that a natural roll of 1 is always a fail.
In this case it is obselete to issue sustained fire, but rather go with advance order (wheter the general wishes to use up the 2+ roll to hit). The tactical aspect, of deciding "now what to do?" loses just one choice, as the others are definietly more benefical.

As I stated, it is a little aspect of the game, since it requries a rarely high firepower (2+) against a target that is without cover modifier.

The IDEA to staunch this hole I suggest something that is actually already in the game rules, but on the "otherside". I speak of the 7+.
Similar way we could roll the 1+. Shooting with a 1+ firepower may result a hit in the similar method, the only difference is, that we re-roll on a 1 (with a 4+) instead of a 6.

1+ Firepower roll may result
2,3,4,5,6 a hit.
1 a re-roll.

The re-roll (4+) may result
4,5,6 a hit.
1,2,3 a miss.

With this implementation, not only the hole is staunched, but the rule that destined to avoid automatic hits to happen is preserved.

Thoughts?

Interesting idea I say. I always thought that 7+ was a nice mechanic and this takes it the other way. Might make for a good house rule to try out

Sounds like an interesting house rule. Just be aware it will affect points balance.

3+ hits will be priced knowing they can often be "upgraded" to 2+ easily by SF order (particularly if long range.)

2+ hits will have been priced knowing they couldn't be improved further.

You are basically halving the chance of missing (1/6 to one in 1/12.) Big improvement.

You may find shadowswords suddenly popping up like mushrooms ! :D

Well that is a good point. In my opinion though a single shotty gun is more likely to hit than not (2+), so I guess it is more important to count with the effectiveness of damage (number of attacks, lance, macro, titankiller, TK++) instead of wheter it is going to hit or not. It's a case of scatter of a D6 goes against probability.

On the other hand, there is the tactical option (with this house rule), to be able to sustain fire with these units, which could be still inferior even with better hitting values (in other words, taking less risk with dice scatter), beacuse of staying in position and not making a single move / turn.
This is definietly the case with units hitting with 2+ but not having long range (Fire Prisms, Warhounds, Leman Russ Thunderers) but also affects Shadowswords and Deathstrikes aswell.

I just had a battle today afternoon, where I needed to make advance moves with my SHT Falcion company and deathstrikes, to avoid easy hackdowns. Also I successfully hitted with every shot on 2+, and even 3+ for once, yet I didn't feel it made a huge advantage, but rather a calculated and expected result, where my points were spent. Even so it was more useful to also move with these units to a safer position thus increasing the gap beetween raiding enemies.

With this house rule and using sustained fire, the same damage would have been applied as above (2+ shootings are usually few), but without any movement. The only difference or should I say buff is; lessening the dice scatter interfere.

not so keen myself, you're basically making shadowswords considerably better, and very little else.....

the bonus is built in to any 2+ to hit weapon, you can still hit an opponent in cover on a 2+ by sustaining, alternatively against a target in the open you can move to reposition, effectively adding 15cm to the range, without losing any potential improvement you would gain through sustaining fire.... I would love a second chance, as my shadowswords frequently miss, but them's the breaks in this game!

Nice idea that allows 2+ weapons to improve when sustaining.
However as others say, this provides yet another element of 'power-creep' in the game.

Does anyone know whether this was suggested and discarded when the rules were originally written?

It wasn't. This was the first I've heard of the idea.
