they do, but the TK is like a new round of shooting, say you have a shadowsword shooting at 2 marines and a land raider, the marines are in front, closer than the raider, he gets lucky and hits both marines with his heavy bolters, if one marine saves, then he subsequently takes the TK hit (at least that's how we play it.... I think!)
That would depend on how the shadowsword player chose to target the formation it was shooting at and if the troops were "in cover" or touching the AV (classed as in cover) whilst the LR was out of cover.
The HB's would have to chose to fire in cover and take the -1 to hit whilst the Volcano cannon could fire at units in the open. This would mean it couldn't hit units that were in cover (the Marines in this case) and the nearest viable unit would be the LR.
Although if non of the units were in cover then it would be possible that one of the Marines would be the next "viable" target.
When allocating hits it has to be the nearest "viable" unit that is hit.
If a player ignores the -1 to hit for cover then they cannot hit units in cover, but if players do take the -1 to hit for cover they can hit units out of cover.
If a player chose to hit WE's it can only hit WE's.
MW (including TK's) cannot choose AP or AT as a target type they can only choose WE's as a target or other units "In Cover" or "out of cover" (in or out of cover is usually, but not always, enough to differentiate between between Infantry and AV's).
