Soooooooo I had a game the other night vs. a Kreig army list and I was firing my Manta at one of my opponent's DK infantry companies which also had some Gorgon Troop Carriers. Lighting them up, the Rail Gun hit and so did some of the other weapons that were regular AT and AP. After normal hit allocation, then came the TK hit...which my opponent put on the infantry...SO the rules lawyers in the both of us went into action. :tut

Obviously I was aiming to take out a Gorgon and deny his units some cover saves, but he had something other in mind and toasted one of his infantry stands.

YOU know where I'm going with this. So should have the TK hit gone on the Gorgon first or was my opponent right to put it on the

RIW:

Quote:
The following special rules apply when shooting either at or with war engines. In general, war engines are treated in the same manner as armoured vehicle targets (i.e., any hit that would affect an armoured vehicle can affect a war engine).

Quote:
If a formation includes both war engines and non-war engine units then an attacker must state whether any attacks he makes on the formation will be directed at the war engines or the other units in the formation. Attacks directed at the war engines can only be allocated against war engines if they hit, while attacks directed at other units may not be allocated to the war engines in the formation.

So it sounds like both of you were in error (more your opponent than you however =D )
1. at the start you should have stated if you're targeting the WE or not
2. even if not stated, your opponent was being a neck beard :)

Since the rule says you MUST allocate the hits to WEs or non-WEs, the failure should fall on you (no offense). I would have taken it on the infantry too. It's like in the army, if you leave your footlocker unsecured then you are responsible for your belongings being stolen because you encouraged another soldier to steal. :P

Fair enough but you can't claim that allocating the TK to a INF stand wasn't a bit much though :)
(though being DKoK probably only that giant mob of INF stands and 2 gorgons in the formations)

It's one of those situations where fun and enjoying the game should trump rule lawyering. In any reasonable view point of the battle, obviously the SS was going to target the gorgons and I would have been classy enough to allow my opponent to allocate the hit there and remind them that next time call out where the hit goes FIRST.

Agreed, the responsibility falls on the shooter. That being said, I personally think the rule sucks and the shooter should be able to allocate a TK weapon on any vehicle, not just a WE.

If the target formation only had INF and AV, then the player receiving the shots could assign the TK hits to infantry, right?

I thought the hits went front to back as well? If the AV was next in line then it got pegged. Hrmmm guess I've been playing wrong the whole time.

they do, but the TK is like a new round of shooting, say you have a shadowsword shooting at 2 marines and a land raider, the marines are in front, closer than the raider, he gets lucky and hits both marines with his heavy bolters, if one marine saves, then he subsequently takes the TK hit (at least that's how we play it.... I think!)

That would depend on how the shadowsword player chose to target the formation it was shooting at and if the troops were "in cover" or touching the AV (classed as in cover) whilst the LR was out of cover.
The HB's would have to chose to fire in cover and take the -1 to hit whilst the Volcano cannon could fire at units in the open. This would mean it couldn't hit units that were in cover (the Marines in this case) and the nearest viable unit would be the LR.
Although if non of the units were in cover then it would be possible that one of the Marines would be the next "viable" target.

When allocating hits it has to be the nearest "viable" unit that is hit.
If a player ignores the -1 to hit for cover then they cannot hit units in cover, but if players do take the -1 to hit for cover they can hit units out of cover.
If a player chose to hit WE's it can only hit WE's.
MW (including TK's) cannot choose AP or AT as a target type they can only choose WE's as a target or other units "In Cover" or "out of cover" (in or out of cover is usually, but not always, enough to differentiate between between Infantry and AV's).

yeah for simplicity assume the marines aren't touching the LR....

Were the Infantry in cover, if so did you take the -1 to hit them.
If they were in the open and nearer than the Gorgon then he played it correctly, if they were in cover and you did not take the -1 to hit targets in cover then he played it wrong.
Either way you'll likely not make the mistake of not stating you were targeting a WE for a while ;) .

Well, in a tourney I nail the guy. If it was a friendly game I would simply grumble and throw disparaging comments at my opponent about his inability to satisfy his wife, then let him allocate the TK.

The other day I shot a full Ork Landa from the sky with a double tap, double critical. It was the second activation of the night. I let him take back the move as if it never happened, but only in exchange for some well deserved ridicule.

I'm still losing to air-assaults quite frequently.... I like seeing landas, thawks and the rest going down in flames :)
