We're pleased to announce that the new Epic UK Imperial Guard Codex is now up on the website
http://www.epic-uk.co.uk/lists/CodexImperialGuard.pdf
Thanks to everybody who has helped out with playtesting, photos and the document itself

This review makes minor changes to the Steel Legion, Baran Siegemasters, Ulani Tank Co and Vanaheim Air Cavalry based on playtesting and feedback since their release 2 years ago. In addition there is a brand new list to Epic UK - the Death Korps of Krieg.

These lists will be legal for all EUK anf EUK affiliated tournaments starting with the London tournament

My thoughts, all IMHO:

Fixed Commissars!

I can play IG in EUK tournaments again without steam coming out of my ears when I roll silly numbers, yay!

=======================

Steel Legion

No Russ Company points drop means Russ Companies will remain a loser's choice.

Arty Company points drop - following recent discussions on here a 50pts points drop seems not enough... IIRC Steve reckoned they still wouldn't be worth their points cost at 500pts(?), because buying two Arty Platoons would still be better, so I would have preferred to see them at 500pts. I expect they'll remain a loser's choice.

NetEA Baneblade stats adopted - Baneblades are now just sub-optimal instead of terrible, yay I can use them again!

Griffons to 50pts - yay! perfect!
Hellhounds to 100pts - Good-oh, perhaps might still not be worth their cost there but it's still a good points drop.
Russ Upgrade to 175pts - Still too expensive to ever see play I'd guess.

Putting Spacecraft into the allies points allocation is interesting - Emperor's not worth 200pts though IMO, probably it's worth less than the Lunar because it's slow and steady and doesn't have a pin-point attack. Lunar might warrant a reduction to 125pts.

=================================

Siegemasters -

*makes raspberry noise*

=================================

Ulani -

Good to see the Tank Riders rule changed away from it's bannanas first version.

I'd tested the Tank Hunters with those stats for an early Minervan iteration and found them too powerful so not surprised by the points increase.

=======================

Vannaheim -

Still looks a bit activation light for my taste.

=======================

Krieg -

Death Riders 75pt points increase - Interesting, I found this formation somewhat sub-optimal and probably originally slightly overpriced, extremely vulnerable to arty and shooting. You did upgrade them to get two attacks rather than one though so I guess they're not too far out, but likely retain their vulnerability.

Medusa Change - Fits the theme I suppose but the 40k/background version has indirect fire - I'd probably have just removed it rather than changing the role of the unit.

Bombards - Probably needed a points drop (in all lists) as they're just not that great.

Deathstrike Launcher - I could understand if the change was for theme (put more movement in the list), but making it for model availability doesn't make any sense to me as the suggested model for this list is still in production:[/i] http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Aeronautica ... SILOS.html
Plus there are plenty of other models in the EUK IG lists that are actually OOP, eg the Stormsword, or never had a model like the Macharius.

AA guns - Rationalising down to one type makes sense. I'd have picked the Hydra platform as the long range AA gun kinda sucked IMO.

Machariuses - Removal of the command tank likely makes the formation now a bit overpriced I'd guess. They always pick up BM's really quick for me.

Stormblade - Was always the most marginal SHT in the list and if one was selected for removal this'd be it - not that its presence ever caused any balance problems, mind you. Stormblade & Stormsword only got left of the Steel Legion list due to infighting between SG & FW, and because SG couldn't afford to put the models into production, rather than for balance reasons.

"Light Artillery" - A shame to lose the heavy mortar & quad launcher because they were cool, but I can see the rationale here even if I don't agree.

Tank Platoon - Doesn't make sense to me deleting the Thunderer Siege Tank from the Krieg Siegebreakers list. Model availability is no more of a factor than it is for Stormblades in this list or Tank Hunters elsewhere. Agree with removal of Vanquisher.

Fire Support - Changing type makes sense. I'd have made them their own formation or dropped their cost because they were always pretty much useless as an Upgrade to formations that had no ranged shooting - suppression was instant.

Gorgons - Reduction down to one type makes sense in line with EUK's approach. Points cost nudge fairly inconsequential.

Macharius Upgrade - Agree with points reduction.

Hellhounds - Agree with points reduction.

Extra Infantry - Agree with points cost changes.

Tanks Upgrade - Probably still overpriced, as above.

Trenchworks changes - Fairly inconsequential.

Marauder Bomber changed from Heavy to Light - Will result in the Marauder Bomber going from a really useful often taken unit, to one that's never taken. Mystic Meg told me so.

Engineers - Pity that the most aggressive unit in the list got removed as they were awesome. Model availability wasn't an issue with the NetEA list using GW-only models (Metal Siegemasters troops = Krieg Inf, Stormtroopers = Grenediers, GW Plastic Inf = Engineers).

You didn't mention the Ulani Hellhound formation making its first appearance Ben. Now there is a reason to have Hellhounds in your army :)

I'm just glad baneblades have got the battlecannons they deserve..... maybe in two years time they'll get twin-linked lascannons too..... ;)

looking forward to starting my Kreig force, shame that my grenadiers will be riding around in tractors.... I can hear the wurzels in my head every time I think about it :D

Have you seen the Cadian army list? ;-)

Mind you I am kinda tempted to do an Ulani list after I finish painting my Cadians.

Russ companies a losers choice? You kidding me? I'd consider them to be made of solid win personally, and if your list has a couple of mech infantry units backing them up you actually end up with a really mobile guard army as well. It's nice having a BTS that's hard to actually break and kill as well. Over the last 12 months my record has been really pretty good with them, so i can't praise them enough really!

Other than that, the commisar changes are very welcome :)

I agree on the Arty though, i think the biggest problem is its generally going to be your BTS, and while it will break (hopefully) 1 unit a turn, it's just so fragile, and likely to disappear in a stiff breeze.

The stats support me: SL armies that take Tank Co's are amongst the worst performing SL armies.
Some of that can be accounted for by noobs liking Russes, but a lot of it is them just being overpriced for what they give you - Reavers make a better 650pt investment for example.

Well, it's all a matter of personal perference afterall ;) I'll stick with the Russes - they're working for me!

What i really like about them over the Reaver is the range and firepower. Granted activating can be a little more interesting, and the fact the Reaver is fearless makes it much less vulnerable if it gets broken, but if you play the Russ company sensibly you can generally avoid that happening.

I might also be biased due to the last time i fielded a Reaver i got critted and then blew the damn thing up at the end of turn 3, turning the game to a 2-1 loss :{[]

Same thing happened to me the last time I took a Reaver & it only suffered the one wound as well :(

I think this is where you can find 'em:

http://www.epic-uk.co.uk/ukepicachampionship/index.php

up at the top is a link that says "lists". If you look around there should be some stats there.
5+ RA save for conquerers? Wasn't cool in the previous version, still not cool now :P

oh those....

it does seem from a cursory glance that RichardL is the master of the tank company, from this observation I would suggest that tank companies aren't a poor choice, but more that they aren't simple to use well.....
