Hello All

I have a lovely metal (Mars Pattern?) Warlord Titan which i would like to field, but looking at past army lists for Codex Marines (Astartes) it seems people who have fielded a Warlord generally don't do all that well.

Given Marines are supposed to be a very mobile force, does the Warlord just not fit in with the army strengths or are thos people simply not utilising it correctly.

It seens most lists include 2 Warhounds (played a minigeddon last night and used a Warhound for the first time - it dominated and I won hehe - probably due to superior tactics and correctly guessing what my opponent would bring/count on) and those are the lists that dominate. (but then - there are also army lists with 2 warhounds where results have been abysmal...)

The Warlord seems to be kinda OK for the money... equating to shooting power of 3 average formations. The speed is rather low forcing you to double to bring it into play but range is good - 60cm - allowing it to dominate a fair area. It does reduce your activation count by 2 though.

I guess the FxF and Fwd arcs are really only relevant when carying out a sustained fire, else the titan can turn to bring the weapons to bear on it's chosen target.

Cany anyone clarify why Warlords are not used much, and how one would make use of a Warlord. Is it too expensive for a 3000 point game?

Thanks

Simply put, yes.

It takes up too many points, wrecks your activation numbers and just isn't killy enough to make up for it.

IMHO it's only worth 800 points rather than 850. Compared to an Ork Great Gargant (same price) it's simply not as good, but costs the same.

Also, the "standard config" weapons loadout is very AT-focused, so if the enemy feeds AP type targets to the Warlord, it's stuffered, wheras other similarly costed Titans generally have better all-rounder firepower.

Simply put - Vultures followed by Death Strikes, backed up by Shadowswords.

However, whilst a Warlord is not a must take formation it can be used every so often as shock formation. It is the situation where armies change over the years and what was once perceived as a poor unit can make a comeback with a vengeance at a later stage. For example: Wave Serpents in the UK tournament scene.

Absolutely, and against some armies or opponents a warlord type titan can really shine.

For example, I know my local eldar opponent doesnt like Cobras, and that he struggles to bring down a ravager I relatively often field. Every now and then I will throw in a Banelord to my list, knowing that it will pose him problems, which it probably wouldnt do to a guard army.

Hi People

Some feedback. This past weekend I played a 3000 point game against a Lost and the Damned army. The Warlord came along.

I found it very difficult to bring him into play. His 15cm move essentially forces you to double or possibly even march on the first turn in order to bring him up into a potentially usefull position.

My oponent made use of cover to keep most of his formations away from the Warlord, resulting in a target poor environment!! On the other hand, the half of the table where the titan was was pretty much mine, again because of my opponent keeping most his units out of range/LOS. I think there was just one situation where the Warlord managed to bring all his weapons to bear and make them count. A sustained fire on one of his hoards which were lining up for an assault. Needless to say the 16+1 shots on sustained managed to break the formation. Other shots the Warlord took did break the formations, but they were 4 unit formations and one time due to the '10cm terrain' affect, could only fire on 2 of the 4 units in the formation, bringing down 17 shots on 2 lol.

So, I am still in two minds as to the value of the Warlord. Most certainly he did not manage to shoot all that much, but his presence on the battlefield certainly affected the game in a big way, with him dominating the region he was in. In addition, the two LaTD Subjugators spent turns 1 and 2 hiding from the Warlord, and therefore did not fire at all in those turns, so I guess he paid off there as well. (Stupidly I later CC'd those Subjugators with my bikes and lost without scratching them...)

One could bring in 3 Warhounds plus small change for the cost of a Warlord, and have much better maneuvrability...

I have not yet played a 3000 pointer with 2 Warhounds so it would be interesting to see how they performed compared to the Warlord. Certainly with their 30cm move they would be much more mobile.

As an aside, I won the game on points :) - but to be fair, my opponent had limited himself by choosing not to include any traitor units in his army selection (testing list mod options)

I think the key attributes of the warlord is the ability to hold ground and the nasty support fire (8x FF3+, concentrated in one unit). To get the most out of him you need to a) have it contest at least one objective, preferably two and b) support as many assaults as you can manage during the game. Shooting/assaulting with it is also important, of course, but as he needs to double to get into position the shooting is reduced, so you have to get value from it outside its own activation.

it seems that standard practice is to place an objective exactly 30cm from another, slowly advance the warlord, firing as you go, until you're sat contesting both of them, if your opponent wants them he has to come into range of your nasty firepower....

Would I be right in saying that this is effectively more than just denying your opponent 2 objectives in his half of the table? IF the warlord makes it into the enemy half of the table and assuming your opponent decides to ignore him, you're effectively denying the opposition 3 tournament scenario objectives? BTS / Defend the Flag / They shall not pass? Granted, it does feel like a lot of eggs in one large bipedal death machine basket and probably hinges a lot on your opponent a.) ignoring the warlord and/or b.) not throwing everything he's got at the warlord

it is an eggs in basket type tactic, but I'm reliably informed that generally lists are built around warlords to support such tactics, rather than just 'tacking-on' a warlord to a list.... so you'll presumably include stuff to remove threats (deathstrikes, TK weapons, aircraft) early, and reduce the risk to your big 850 point investment

I've only played around 10 games so far and I've never come up against anything like a warlord on my own, so I'm going on what I've read around the forums, and been told by more experienced players rather than actual experience.... ;)

Well AH decided to play with his Warlord and I was left with a WTF moment as I was not expecting it at all. I would have used my subjugators to have a go at the Warlord, but with the SR difference of Marines to LatD I was not prepared to take the risk as AH had placed his objectives in my half very well and without enough cover nearby for me to hide behind. In this game although the Warlord didn't kill it's points worth of opponents it was definately a game winner as I had no answer to it.

When Physicsman faced a warlord in the tournament scene, he teleported three formations of termies into CC with it. Vaped the beast in one round.

Admittedly, three formations of termies is more points, but after using them he still had three formations whilst the opponent was down 850 points.

I think that highlights the 'rock-paper-scissors' nature of this game, that there are no unbeatable armies.... a fairly 'standard' guard build with shadowswords and deathstrikes wouldn't struggle nearly so much, and would probably keep the warlord pinned down as it had to scuttle from cover to cover

And this is the point; objective placement becomes crucial when playing with or against a titan as it is fairly predicatable where the beast is then going to move. Whether they kill enough enemy to match their cost is usually dependent on whether the opponent tries to kill or avoid the beast.

That is nothing new - I always used to just avoid Titans in my NetEPIC games. Annoyed the hell out of my opponents :).

Then I faced a titan legion and it wasn't an option. I got mashed. *Shakes fist at Yak52*.
