So as we have been playing more and more, more questions come up....

we had a situation where a barrage was being fired, now he had a direct line of Sight to one battlewagon, but not to others and not to the boyz including the Warlord. My opponent was going by the rule you have to place the template to cover the most models, the issue I had with this was he was positioning the Template so the center of the template was not in his Line of sight, and the corner of it was just clipping the battlewagon he could see, and then covering the Warlord, a boy, and the battlewagon....personally i found this kind...cheatie.
Any Ideas?
Also if your firing a barrage at a mix of troops and Tanks, can you hit both with the same template? with other weapons you choose AT or AP, same hold true for Barrages?

Also also....Supreme commander. they can order Troops too follow them if they take an Engage Action. If they get Engaged, can they order near by formations to assist in the same way?

I kinda have a feeling my opponent was bending the rule Just a touch :)

simple answers:

1. Yes he can do that
2. Yes he can hit both AP and AT units
3. Supreme Commander does not work in defence, however it was a rule talked about in the past and the Space Wolves list may have adopted it

It is not so much 'bending the rule' rather than it is supposed to be representative. Models are not static so the game lends itself to getting the biggest bang for your buck. That's why it is EPIC :) Once you accept that part, you will use it to the best of your ability.

Hope this helps

Cheers...

So long as the template is over one unit which everything firing the barrage has LoS too, and has maximized the number of units it covers, then yes that was legal. You would be allowed to position the template however you want, so long as it meets the first criteria and still covers the same number of units (remembering that WEs count for half their starting DC if you put the center of the template over them). He would then roll to hit everything underneath the template separately, accounting for concealment, which still gives your Warlord a fair shake.

As for the Commander ability, yes you can use it defensively. I think that was either FAQed in or errataed in back in 08 with Neal's changedoc maybe? I don't have a PDF in front of me though. A formation has to be intermingled with the assaulted formation that has commander in it for them to join in though.

Sorry Dave, Commander cannot be used on the defence.

If you re-read the process you will find that you measure ranges to a single unit, and then place the template to cover that unit.
This means that the template may well cover other units that are beyond the range of the firers, or not in LOS of the firers; these are still valid targets provided that they are under the template. The only stipulation is that the firers are in range of the same unit under the template and that the process is used to cover the most enemy units in the target formation.

On the 'Commander' question, The player declares that the Supreme commander is 'commanding' adjacent formations (within 5cms) to perform a combined assault. If the activation is sucessfull, all declared formations move, otherwise only the Supreme Commander formation has actually failed the test.

that's the thing, he isn't commanding an assault, he is being Assaulted, and as it says Activation I think it is pretty clear now he can't having read the rule book and talked with other players. He wouldn't have been able to pulled the Russes in like he did when My Kult of speed engaged his Regimental HQ...wouldn't have changed the overall assault much though...the end results might have been a little less destructive to me...but hey, we learned, and next game we know.

Found the bit about using commander defensively in the Epic Handbook 08 (last paragraph of 2.1.2), so if you guys/he are/were using that then that's probably why he thought he could do it.

Incidentally, anyone know why that was dropped from Neal's changedoc way back when?

I believe people felt it would be too powerful. I vaguely remember it being brought up again as a way to make commanders more popular, and the power seemed the primary objection.

Having played with and against it for about a year, I found that it takes too much away from assault armies.
