I laugh when I see a War Engine with 1 BM to break. I always state "I just have to look at him and he will break". :D

You do all your shooting, work ouit results, and only then, if it survives, does it break and run. So no getting away from the pain.

Interesting to note, even AP fire will break the War Engine as it is being shot at - even though the hits do nothing. Funny they hey?

Yup, you've read the timing wrong; all BMs are added after shooting has been resolved.

Technically, the "place BM for coming under fire" is the very first step listed in the order of play for firing under 1.9.3. However, checking to see if the formation is broken is a separate step, after the firing is resolved.

1.9.3:
Quote:
I – Place one Blast marker on the target formation.
II – Roll to hit.
III – Allocate hits, make saving throws and remove casualties.
IV – Place additional Blast markers for casualties and check to
see if the enemy formation is broken
.

Personally, I find that needlessly confusing and everyone I know just places all the BMs at the end.

There was one game I recall where a single unit was in range and my opponent argued that it should be destroyed with a hackdown hit when the BM was placed. That would, of course, limit fire to a single casualty, rather than 3 casualties (1 kill, 1 BM for kill, 1 BM for coming under fire).
