I can't imagine why you'd ever want to mix them; even one basilisk means the disrupt is lost from the barrage.

The NetEA Draft says 'of the same type', so no (I don't have the original document to verify against).

Minervans are tempting, though I have only standard pattern Russes right now, so SL suits me (and my five Tank Companies) fine. Maybe if I get access to some Evilcasts...

Silly GW, packaging Artillery in mixed companies... of course we'd pay another $10 if they were in batteries... one of the local players uses a Company of 6 Manticors and 3 Basilisks, so he can fire something every turn.

That's Evilcasts thankyou very much.  :)

Which reminds me, I must remember to mould all those variant turrets I've modelled.

I would recommend ...

Tank Co. + Hydra 700
Reg HQ + Hydra 550
2x Artillery Battery 2x 250
1x Flak Battery 150

+ the rest

More activations and only 1 BTS which is not your SC.

WHilst i get to grips with my Eldar, i cant help but look into the original army i was considering, Guard. Now what is better to have running round as the BTS, a Tank Co plus Hydra, or a Reaver Titan? The list i am building is below, and at 4000 points i think ill be sticking a Reaver in there anyways!

Regimental HQ - 1 Supreme Commander, 12 Guard, 7 Chimera's, 1 Hydra - 550 pts
Infantry Company - 12 Guard, 1 Commander, 4 Fire Support - 350 pts
Tank Company - 9 Leman Russ, 1 Vanquisher, Hydra - 700 pts (BTS)
Storm Troopers- 8x. 4xValkyrie. 350pts
Sentinal Squadron - 100 pts
Artillery Battery - 3 Manticores - 250 pts
Flak Battery – 3 Hydra – 150 pts
Super Heavy Tank Platoon - Shadowsword - 200 pts
Super Heavy Tank Platoon - Shadowsword - 200 pts
2 Thunderbolts – 150 pts

Before I make any suggestions. I have an admission. I am a total treadhead, and any advice I give is viewed through a tank tinted lens.

My 3k list is three Tank Companies with Hydras, a plain Regimental HQ, 2 Sentinel Squadrons, and a Shadowsword. Thi gives me 3 BTS, but I have only given up the BTS once, if that.

Tank Companies are incredibly tough formations, especially with a Commissar. Played aggressively, they will make any oppoment's life miserable. On the double, you can take 21 6+ AP, 10 6+ AT, 9 5+AP/5+AT, 1 5+AP/3+AT, and 2 5+AP/6+AT shots from a starting range of 70cm with a Tank Company with Flak. They will take an average of 40 shooting hits to kill.

Sentinel Squadrons are the unsung heroes of the IG. Spread then out as far as possible, and 2 Squadrons can make a nearly unbroken line of ZoC across a 6' board that the enemy must deal with to advance. They must use at least two activations to remove them, and you can still restrict movement by keeping your Broken formations in place unless forced to move by 15cm proximity (broken units retain ZoC).

Depending on the level of WE that you expect to face, 2 Shodowswords may be overkill at 3k. My group rarely uses Battle titans at that level, and so a single Shadowsword is able to cordon off a significant area from Scout titans and superheavy tanks.

I rarely use Flak Batteries, since they are broken from a single death. Integrate your Flak into your core formations, and it is less likely to be suppressed (all units in a formation count as in range and LOS for AA suppression), covers a larger area, and less likely to break.

I will try the weird mixed formation:
Tank Co + Fire support + Chimeras

Maybe it´s overkill or just useless. Let´s see if it works.

I hope you let us know how that goes.

Though my money is on those weaker units generating BMs for the more expensive tanks...

It´s not working :-\

I think the activation count problem is bigger than the BTS problem. I will drop the Hydras from core and field them in support formations.

See, my Steel Legion armies have always been low count, and it's never been a problem for me. In the past three months, I've won well over half my games with them. Various lists, but the current one is average activation count for me.

Regimental HQ w/ Hydra
2x Tank Coy w/ Hydra (BTS)
Artillery Coy
2x Sentinel Squadrons
Shadowsword

Make of it what you will, but this is a build I've had great luck with, though I'd like to fit another Sentinel Squadron in for 160cm of scout screen and a ZoC cordone for the Artillery. Realistically, that's a pipe dream though.

My "hard" Guard list is..

Regimental HQ + Hydra – 550
Tank Company + Hydra – 700 (BTS)
Super-Heavy Tank Company - 500 (1x Baneblade. 2x Shadowsword)
Super-Heavy Tank Platoon – 200 (Shadowsword)
Super-Heavy Tank Platoon – 200 (Shadowsword)
Flak Battery – 150
Warhound Titan – 275
Warhound Titan – 275
Thunderbolt Squadron – 150

Lots of AA, lots of RA WE (many of them with fearless and some insipring), lots of TK.

With the exception of the flak battery (that will hide of course) there are no easy to remove formations, so its hard to reduce its activations.

SG - How do you protect your expensive Arty coy. from a first activation air assault? 2 Hydras are very unlikely to destroy any of the common air transports (T-Hawk/Vampire/Landa). And just about anything will kill arty in CC.

Easy.

3x3 block of arty. Then only garrison 1 Sentinel Squadron. The other goes at the corners of the arty, outside of 5cm. The Scout ZoC means the Sentinels must be assaulted first, and nothing can pop up inside them. Outside of 5cm means they cannot be declared intermingled. Then you take the nearest tank company and shoot the crap out of any air assaulter/teleporters after they've hit your Sentinels.

3 Hydras. 1 in each tank company, 1 in the RHQ.

Addendum: Air assault marines are thin on the ground here. The most I have to worry about are Teletermies.
