is the Tactical heavier than the Assault...?
Simple breakdown is:
Tactical detachment: All-rounders, rank-and-file troops. Reasonable at range shooting (needs a 5 against infantry, a 6 against armour, and each stand fires once). Good at close combat (base-to-base contact) and firefights (up to 15cm range) during an Engagement. 6 stands, so reasonably tough when collecting blast markers. These things will make more sense when you read the rules. Can take three Rhinos free for mobility.
Devastator detachment: Heavy support troops. Good at range shooting (again, needs a 5 against infantry, a 6 against armour, but each stand fires twice). Ordinary at close combat, but great in firefights. 4 stands, though, so a bit fragile when collecting blast markers. A tad expensive, even by marines standards. Best led by a Librarian. Can take two Rhinos free for mobility.
Assault detachment: Highly specialised close combat troops. Can't shoot at range; Engagements only. Great in close combat, ordinary in firefights. Move quickly for infantry, though, thanks to jump packs. Cheap by marines standards. Only 4 stands again, though, so a bit fragile when collecting blast markers. Best led by a Chaplain.
