My brother and I are thinking about giving Epic a whirl and have a few questions/need a bit of help.

Is there any simple starter armies we could try out, we are looking at playing Eldar and Space Marines mostly.  We want a few troops to get a feel for the game, but not so much to make a big ordeal.

Also, would Mechwarrior figures be close the same scale, we are looking across the board, Infantry, Tanks, and Mechs.

Your best bet is to play the Training Scenarios in the rulebook first... it starts with mirrored forces of Marines and then expands from there, explaining rules concepts as you go.

You can use anything to represent your models to get a feel for the game and then build from there.

Mechwarrior figs (the Clicky-bases one at least), are a little on the big size for Epic.

Welcome to the forums, Lotus!

Are the tanks and mechs too big.  My brother hates to paint actually, so I am eyeing up prepainted choices.

Hi Lotus,

Great to hear you're giving Epic:Armageddon a crack. It's a great game.  :)

Both Eldar and Marines are great fun forces to play, although Marines can be difficult to come to grips with. What sort of points do you think you'd aim for?

You might want to play some Eldar vs Eldar or Marines vs Marines games to start with, and (like Chroma suggested) just mirror the opposing forces. That will enable you to focus on the mechanics of the game without worrying too much about finding the opposition's weak spot.

Just my 2 cents.  :))

PS  In terms of painted forces, check out eBay. You'll often find people offloading some of their armies, often already painted and based.

Perhaps we'll do that, just do a few small Marine Forces.  Maybe 2x Tactical Units, an Assault Unit and a unit of Land Raiders.  Basic and straightforward, but should be suitable for our purposes.

I am thinking about buying a couple things, but I want to make sure we'll play first.  I am thinking of grabbing a Eldar Warhost, Set of Warwalkers and a Phantom Titan to start off.

Oy, sometimes I wish I was more familiar with the 40k universe, some of this terminology is killing me.

You could always trial the game by cutting out some paper or cardboard for the bases and just write on them what they are. This is a good way to play the training scenarios that appear in the GW Epic:Armageddon PDFs. Definitely the cheapest way to dip your feet in the water, too.

Regarding the 40K terminology, feel free to send me a message with the terms you're struggling with.  :)

I just forget what is what.  Like is the Tactical heavier than the Assault, which is better than the Monkey Armor, etc.  Just messes with me sometimes, but then, I am currently sleep deprived.

And I have a huge pile of Citgo Cash cards I steal everytime I get gas, that I use for basing stuff, so I intended to cut bases out of that and write the names on the top :D

Anyways, if we like it I plan to buy the Eldar stuff, mostly to test it out.  I'll probably order just the Warhost first, and get the rest later.

is the Tactical heavier than the Assault...?

Simple breakdown is:

Tactical detachment: All-rounders, rank-and-file troops. Reasonable at range shooting (needs a 5 against infantry, a 6 against armour, and each stand fires once). Good at close combat (base-to-base contact) and firefights (up to 15cm range) during an Engagement. 6 stands, so reasonably tough when collecting blast markers. These things will make more sense when you read the rules. Can take three Rhinos free for mobility.

Devastator detachment: Heavy support troops. Good at range shooting (again, needs a 5 against infantry, a 6 against armour, but each stand fires twice). Ordinary at close combat, but great in firefights. 4 stands, though, so a bit fragile when collecting blast markers. A tad expensive, even by marines standards. Best led by a Librarian. Can take two Rhinos free for mobility.

Assault detachment: Highly specialised close combat troops. Can't shoot at range; Engagements only. Great in close combat, ordinary in firefights. Move quickly for infantry, though, thanks to jump packs. Cheap by marines standards. Only 4 stands again, though, so a bit fragile when collecting blast markers. Best led by a Chaplain.

Where are you based?
Another good way to begin would be to find a friendly, more experienced epic player- there is a players index somewhere on this website I believe.
I'd also not rule out "NetEpic" it's different, but has stood the test of time through fan support, and again, the rules can be down loaded completely free (www.netepic.org).
Good luck and happy gaming!

I am a bit south of Erie, PA.  I may know someone who has stuff, but I'll have to dig out his email.

Ahh, your Glenn from TMP then? If you want those Marine counters for the training scenarios let me know.

Just a note on the Mechwarrior/Epic sizes: Epic is 6mm, while MW:DA is roughly "N" scale, or 10mm (I say "roughly" because their scaling is not entirely consistent). The difference may sound small, but it will throw measurement off. That said, some of your mechs will be Titan-sized, so they would make pretty good proxies, if you want to use a titan/gargant without spending for it.

Groov3r's suggestion is a good one, though: use some markers (cardboard, coins) and play a few small scenarios to see how you like things. And skulk around Ebay on a regular basis.

The Tanks & Mechs may be O.K. IMO ...  BT/CAV and ORGE ... the Infantry are too Big, but you can get by with the other models.  GZG - the Infantry is fine but the Vehicles tend to be a little small. Command Horizon - the Infantry and Hvy Vehicles are good, but some of their lighter vehicles tend to be a little small, like GZG. Adler - Vehicles are O.K., but Infantry tends to be a bit big.  IMO besides G/W-F/W, DRM & Exodus Wars are your best Mix !  Welcome to the show ...  :D

Well, here is the Mechwarrior that I am thinking will go over well.

He is a big Vulture fan, and I can get em for less than $5.

Tanks

Flyers

Battle Armor

Most of these I can grab for less than a couple bucks each, so that is good, but I plan to check with friends first, see if I can just buy stuff as a lot.
