That's why we're on Epicomms... we have seen the light! ?

It's late, off to bed... I'll be probably back here around sunrise... one good thing about not sleeping a lot! I get more web time and get to watch X-File reruns while I surf!

When talking about 40k we must always agree what is the question. Are we asking if it is fun or are we asking if it is a good "war game".

I have had many a fun game playing 40k. But then I have had many fun games of "Life" Chess, and "Hide and Go Seek" as well. If we are asking about fun then the fact is, it is less about rules and more about who we are with and how we interact with them. But when I want to exersize my tactical brain, 40k is not the game I turn to.

So to be fair, 40k could be fun. Just not what I am looking for in a table top war game.

2nd ed was cool - however only if you stuck to the paper booklet that came with the game.

Same was with 6th ed Warhammer - stick with Ravening Hordes and it is ok.

Otherwise if you want a decent skirmish game, try VOID.

The discussion of "just for fun games", "realism", etc., etc., for me it's about "time" ...  With the time limitations of "adult"(?) life, if I'm going to spend 3,4,5 + hours, playing, I'm looking for something like a game which "Fits" my tastes ...       :;):

Hi!

Thats a true point, one can have fun with anything. Its another thing to be critical about the same thing.

Few things are fun AND get critical acclaim.

Thanks for saying so clearly what I was attempting to say.

I get to game once a month now if I am lucky. Thus I do not have time for either games that do not address my needs or for pgames with people who feel the need to argue/rules lawyer every point.

Thus I elect to pass on the 40k crowd and play things I get satisfaction from.

Hi!

I mentioned in a post once about the "stages" one goes throough in our gaming lives. I think most on these forums have reached the point were time is so precious that it must be spent on something that is deemed worthwhile from that persons point of view. Its not only about a quick fun time anymore (although thats still important), but the game needs to fulfill a lot more to justify the time spent.

Agreed, Primarch. I want a game that is fun and provides some mental stimulation. I don't want a game where you can build the "perfect army" or devise an "unbeatable strategy." I like having choices and variety when building an army. Sometimes when I play epic, I will purposely choose a detachment that I haven't used in a while. Furthermore, playing and having fun (and the social that goes along with it) are more important than winning!   :D

Hi!

You pretty much play epic as I do. I devise armies more on fluff or "what I havent used lately" principals that building armies "to win". Winning is secondary and sometimes not even in the equation. Having a stimulating game is far more important.

Yeah gaming is all about the people. I am reasonably social and like to meet people, though I often get 'character recommendations' from trusted friends about other wargamers!

Something wierd... when I play epic I like really big games, way over the piddly tournament points limits they recommend. However, with 40k I probably prefer small skirmishes with a couple of squads. I guess if I want big games I do it with a system that is designed for it!

Hi!

Markconz points out a vital aspect of epic gaming - those who you play with. At this level we are at we are extremely selective who we play with. We play with people whom share the similar gaming ethos, in other words stimulate us as well as entertain us.

I have on occasion, NOT played a game, becuase I did not like the attitude of the person I was supposed to game with. I WILL ALWAYS play a game, ANY GAME, with a good gaming partner.

I'd play any game, any version of epic with everyone on this list, becuase I trust your way of gaming and the attitudes displayed on the forums.

Time is precious, to be used with a good game, but more importantly a good PERSON to game with. :)

Totally agree.

Gaming for me is about fun.

I choose models because I like them or because I perceive them to be fun to game with.

I won't even try and build the perfect army because it isn't fun.

As mentioned in a previous thread I did try once doing this in Car Wars and the result was a very quick and boring game. Whereas when we played games with fun cheap cars and bikes we had more fun.

In my previous gaming days when I played Warhammer FB a lot (we are talking 1st and 2nd edition here) some of the people I played games with were obssessed with power-armies and super strength characters (read Chaos Warriors); whereas I was more interested in fun models with characters. My armies had snotlings, Pygmies and other weird fun stuff.

These days my games are still for fun.

I think you can tell a lot about a gamer by the armies they play.

Hi!

I have as a normal custom to peruse the "gaming scene" of the local neighbor I wish to play in. As Jimbo points out you can learn a lot about the people by watching how they play the game. This simple exercise has saved me countless headaches.

Hi Jimbo,

Jimbo: My armies had snotlings, Pygmies and other weird fun stuff.

I love Pygmies and Snotlings... :D

If I ever did 28mm as a scale, I'd want pygmies and Snotlings/Grotz/Little Green Snotz!

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.
