LOL! My Dad used to tell me he played Army Men with clothes pins as a kid, and I am starting to appreciate what he meant, haha.

Okay, here's another question.  War Hordes are made up of Battle and Cult Warbands, and a Battle one must have at least 4 detachments.  I know Chaos Marines can be led by a Champion/Commander for 20 points, or a Champions stand for 120 points (which I like).  Chaos marine detachments aren't independent, so I know someone has to lead it, so if the counter includes 4 Chaos Marine Stands with a commander, how would you add a Champion to it? Would it take up one of the detachment requirements?  I can already have a Champion lead the whole Battle warband, so would that mean I would have several running around? I have most of the rules, but are missing the counters and their descriptions, so I can't figure it all out. Also, I know Orks in a Warband have to remain within 30cm of a Warboss to receive orders, but the rules for Chaos doesn't mention anything about the Warband staying within a cetain distance of the Champion/Daemon. Boy, it's hard to digest Andy's rules sometimes. . . I am guessing the individual detachments fight independently so long as they have a Champion nearby. . . How much did the Chaos Marine Detachment cost? I have realized that you just can't add up their BRs as Andy seemed to give a discount for choosing pre-set detachments.

Back in the day, we just made up our own detachments as we found Andy's rules a little hard to follow.  Just so I have something to work on at work, do you remember how these detachments came:

Land Raiders (I am assuming in twos)
Slaanesh/Khorne riders.  (I know they can be Warband leaders as well, but can they fight in detachments as well? I know they are expensive)
Trolls/Minotaurs

Thanks again Legion, I don't expect my White Dwarfs to get here for a few more weeks, so this helps.  I'll have more questions about the IG next... hehe...

I base 2 on a 20x20, cuz all my old stuff is that way.  I have some others that I bought second hand on 20x40 bases, but I think I'm going to cut them off and start over.

I have started putting bike/cav commanders 3 on a 20x40, though.  I like the ability to add a bit of variety to the commanders.

As far as basing materials, craft sticks (i.e. popsicle sticks) work great and they are super cheap.  I bought a bag of them that are 3/4 inch wide (look like tongue depressors), which is almost perfect (~19mm).  You can measure the length you want and cut them with snips for nice thin, sturdy wooden bases.  With a sealer coat of primer, superglue sticks just fine.

I guess basing two you get more from on sprue. Sound idea, but I think basing three come from the bigger 40k background, Codex Space Marnes and the likes...

Cheers

I personally mount the whole detachment on one base. I use evergreen modeling co's styrene to make my bases. I cut them in different configs.

Gandalf,

4 or more dets. = a "Battle", each "Battle" is lead by a separate champion stand or Deamon Prince as the overall Battle Commander. Think of a Battle (we changed the name to Chaos Legion - it was less confusing), like an Ork Warband.

So, each SM det. has a command stand and there is one overall command stand for that Battle.

CSM - 350, ?
Land Raiders - 2 for 350. ?

For Riders, all 3 types, I mentioned above how we based them, and we put them in dets. of 5 stands each. Andy's rules left something to be desired. So we took some ideas from SM2, because of that.

We based Minotaurs 5 per Cavalry base and Trolls individually, but 5 per base would work too. ?

Back to leaders, a "Battle" is lead by a Champ. stand or D/Prince, a Horde is commanded by a D/Prince or Greater Deamon. ?

We look at those like SM Battalion Cdrs and Regt. Cdrs, and played the rules to ?reflect that. ?

We added Primarchs to the command structure based on SM2. ?

The SM1 Chaos rules needed a lot of fine-tuning ... as you are seeing ... :)

When I was small my father helped me take a batch of the old style (one solid piece) clothes pins and cut a small part off the base to make then flat so they would stand up. We then took some paint and made two different "squads" based on Red and Blue. I played with those quite a bit.

How simple it was back then...

Oh well, back to the here and now :-)

Bob,

That's simply amazing!! ?

Welcome aboard!!! ?

As I said, from looking at your DS/GZG site, you truly are an experienced modeler and gamer. Oh yes, I almost forgot, on Flintstone Gaming Night, we wear loin cloths made of fur, put sticks in our hair and carry stones. On Jetson Night we wrap ourselves in tin foil and put large fish bowls on our heads!

This topic has hot my wheels turning. I have always made my own bases for myself with plastic bits. Now, I am going for something a little more ambitious.

I have sculpted a few bases for myself out of epoxy resin which I will begin casting for myself and any interested parties. ?}:)

I am making bases with and without the slots for troops. I have different slot sizes. 40k size troops, bikes and old metal robots were used to stamp the slots. I also have plans to remake the old Warlord Titan bases with feet preattatched. I may also do this for the other odd titan types since the foot is the same. I will let you know how it goes and will post my progress here. It is a venture that I am taking on out of desire for half decent bases in the scales that we play in. Wish me luck. ?:p

Good luck with your plans Signius- Is it 2-part epoxy, like Green Stuff you are using? ???

I use Magic Sculp. I like it far better for making my bases, crater, rocks ect... It is soft and acts more like clay. It can even be smoothed with water. All of the other two part materials I have used, so far, have been hard and rubbery.

Yeah, Green stuff and similar products do have the rubbery problem- I have been using kids plastercine (sp?), covered in superglue or PVA to build up and contour my bases, craters etc... :D ...it works better and is far cheaper!

Has anyone tried making their bikes removable so you can have 2 or 3 bike stands?

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.
