For those who don't read the playtest forum, Jervis posted this within the last couple hours: ===============
I'm very happy to be able to announce that we have been in close correspondence with GW's plastic's division over the last few weeks, and after much negotion and planning it looks like we are going to be able to release plastic Epic infantry after all.
I hope you'll forgive me for playing my cards very close to my chest on this subject, but I wanted to avoid dissapoint if the scheme fell through. What we've found out is that it is possible to make a few minor corrections to a plastic mould and a relatively cheap cost (only several thousand pounds!) Once we knew this we were able to come up with a scheme that allowed us to make enough minor corrections to the exisiting plastic sprues so that we can re-release them for them as part of the Epic Armageddon range.
The new sprues are rather more 'focused' then the old E40K sprues, having less variety but a more sensible distribution of the models that are on the sprue. For example, the Guard sprue will no longer has Rough Riders, but will have rather more standard Imperial Guardsmen than it did before. We've done this to make it easier for you to use the plastic sprues to bulk up the rank & file infantry in your army, and to avoid situations where you end up with a stand or two of certain units rather than a full formation.
We'll be backing up the plastic sprues with metal infantry strips that will cover any units not available in plastic. As noted above these will tend to be rather specialised and elite units. They'll be sold in formation sized sets, which I think is a rather better way of dealing with them than trying to cram all of the different units onto a single plastic sprue. Using the rough riders mentioned above as an example again, our plan is to make metal versions of these troops that will be sold in a 'Rough Rider Platoon' blister pack that contains enough models to field an entire platoon.
Unfortunately we won't have any examples of the new style plastic sprues for several months yet, but I thought you would like to know of the change in policy as soon as it had been confirmed.
Jervis Johnson Head Fanatic ===========
Personally, I dig it.

Quote (netepic @ 07 2003 May,08:39) | ...this will give GW a chance to make affordable armies for Epic:A... just gotta hope they take the chance. | The fact they are even looking at the mix on the sprue and thinking about not including all the "special" units gives me hope. If I need troops I buy plastic, if I need something special i only buy the blisters I need. No more overload of Rough Riders etc.

Is the reaction to this news just a cost issue? I can't really see that this makes any difference except that the figs will now be older models and all the new sculpts will be for special troops or units released since Epic 40K.

This bit of information is indeed good news for all concerned no matter what their own personal reasons are; "cost" or otherwise. ?Plastics rule! This is definately a step in the right direction, and a very positive thing for the hobby as a whole.

Don't be too harsh on Jervis, he is in an awkward situation at the moment. I think we can trust the plastics issue to be confirmed at least for SM, IG and Orks, the rest will depend upon the success of the game when it is released.

Yeah, enough with the harshness peeps.
Our game system is being supported, I for one intend to buy three of everything they release (one to use, to for spares/replacments and one to enay ten years from now! )

This is fantastic news. pg - not just because of cost (I think that most people here are crazy enough to buy minis before food!). For me there are two reasons that I want plastics. Fiststly, they are easier to work with. If I want to chop and convert a figure, then plastic is so much easier to do it with. Also, plastics mean individual figures, not bases. While basing figures can be a chore, it is not exactly tough and I like to be able to put my heavy weapon in different places on each stand, to make them look a little different.
While I applaud Jervis and Fanatic for this move, and publicly thank them, I can help being left with a bitter taste in my mouth. If this was the first time that GW had declared something 'limited' only to change their mind after the rush for sales, it would be different....
Anyway, horray for plastics! It was not like I was going to complain about having too much Epic stuff after buying the sprues anyway, and now I have loads of different stuff. Does anyone know whether the EpicA sprues will be similar to the previous version (for example the 'grunt half only') or a complete new remodel to make them Steel Legions?

Seeing as the comment was that they've made alterations to the sprues rather than running to the cost of having entirely new ones made, I'd guess they've stuck with the valhalans and Jungle fighters. I'd expect them to release other regiments as metal additions much like the 40K range.
