I'm new to Epic, and have a quick question for you Eldar folks out there. I'm putting together a Biel-Tan list, and it says for free I can take "0-1 Avatar with a Court of the Young King character"
First off, why would I ever take zero? Perhaps I'm missing something here...
Second, this means I take one character stand that is the "Court of the Young King" and another stand that is the Avatar? But the stats for the CotYK are weird... It doesn't appear to move, fight, etc. And that at some point later in the game, I summon the Avatar near a Farseer piece?
I think I'm missing something here very obvious, but I can't seem to find more info on the CotYK stand... Thanks for any help you can offer this Eldar newbie...

Character's are added to other units. You get the Avatar with the CotYK CH added to it.
In the Alaitoc list, you just get the Avatar.
You can only summon the Avatar with a Farseer, so without Farseers there's no point in taking an Avatar.

So what is the CotYK if it doesn't have movement, cc or ff?

It's a Character. They never have Moves or Armour because they take on the values of the unit they're attached to (though they may have abilities that affect those such as Invulnerable Save).
In this case what this means basically is an extra MW weapon attack in CC:
Court of the Young King, CH Assault Weapons EA(+1) MW

It looks like it grants an extra macro weapon attack to me? So that's in addition to the one you get with the Avatar.
[edit] what Jimmy said!

Aha! That makes sense. So if I were (for example) to take a formation of Guardians for my Biel Tan dudes, I would take 7 Guardian and 1 Farseer units. And I could replace one of those Guardian units with a "Court of the Young King" unit. Or "add" the CotYK to one of the guardian units.
And the Avatar would pop up later, when summoned by one of my Farseers.
It all clicks. Thank you!

No I'm afraid, the cotyk is part of the avatar stand only

Back to square one then... How does that work? The Avatar gets the stat lines from the CotYK? Why even bother making them two separate items?
Or maybe the Biel Tan Avatar gets the CotYK's stats line - other craftworlds may not?

Think of the Court character being a couple dudes hanging out with the avatar (on the same base and moving together). Beyond the normal avatar attacks, they grant an even additional MW attack.
make sense?
So the Avatar by itself (no CotYK) Saves hits on a 3+. In addition can take 3 points damage. If it's in Close combat (base to base) it's got 3 rolls at 2+ to hit. In addition there's 4th attack at 2+ that also does MW damage (requires RA to roll a save, and at then only one roll). There's a shooting attack and FF as well but that's not really important here.
If the Avatar has the CH upgrade as well all the above applies but then there's an even another extra additional attack in CC that's 2+ MW as well.
So to recap=> By itself, roll 4 dice hitting at 2+. One of those dice (say pick one before or use another color) is MW With the CH added, instead roll 5 dice hitting at 2+ but instead there's 2 dice for MW.

Yep. In fact, I now recall reading some of the fluff: the avatar is "summoned" prior to battle (this was from the 40K codex) by some poor eldar sap (i.e., the Young King) who actually becomes the Avatar. Once the battle was over, the poor Young King was never the same, or died, or disappeared, or was drawn into the warp. Seemed a lousy deal if you were the Young King in question, but hey. Those Eldar are mysterious and inscrutable.

The Avatar is the unit, you add the CotYK to that. Characters are "wargear" and are added to units.
