This might seem a strange question, but I was looking through the army app, and all the Guard lists seem to be rather specialised.

I think Steel Legion looks even more "normal" than the Cadians, which seems odd to me as Cadians are the bread-and-butter of 28mm scale!

I ask because at some point in the future I would love to have an army that /looks/ Valhallan. BUT - I'd also love to have some of the new toys that IG have - which I think would mean a DKOK list, but trenchworks and rough riders aren't really in the theme for me, so I would probably do without them. So I'm trying to think what would be best to represent them.

SL List is as you say, pretty much the go-to typical guard formation. The Cadians in the fluff are the quintessential guard regiments but their list is them working in their elite assault form (Super Heavies and specialist detachments).

Thanks for the replies!

The only 40k guard I ever got were some metal Valhallans and some ratlings I painted in winter colours so I have a fondness for them. =)

"Counts as" is a wonderful thing for those aesthetically inclined. Defy retentiveness and proxy using sound judgement, I say.

Hi!

The Steel Legion is, in my opinion, a very versatile list. You can deploy almost anything that the IG has (mechanized infantry, artillery, tanks...). It allows you to try experimenting some play styles and after a few games you could move "easily" to a more specific list.

Regards!

I wish that the steel legion had a capital imperialis though and for that you need cadians. But hey who's to say that today's steel legion can't be used as cadians tomorrow :) they are all in the guard in the end

Actually the original SM1 charts for IG, SMs and Orks are the "best" IMO ... still use it ... Wish I had a DL of it ! Let me look around ... Hey Primarch you have these ?

Thanks for the replies!

It's moot at the minute as there's so many other projects to do - but I will be on the lookout for good Valhallan proxy infantry, too. Apparently GW did official ones in plastic but I can't seem to find good photos of them online.

Ha ha! I guess I'd be better off using 6mm soviets or the Defeat in Detail Novans, then!

Considering that Valhallans are basically WW2 Soviet Red Army in spaaaaaaaace... that's actually a good idea.
