Quick question re Scarab Necron list:

The Critical hit rule for the Abattoir says: "Critical Hit Effect: Explodes. All units (including the Abattoir) within 5cm suffer a TK4+ hit."

Given the "including the Abattoir" reference, this seems to mean the Abattoir is not destroyed automatically by a Critical hit. As such, it would seem the Abattoir gets a single save against the TK4+ hit due to its Living Metal special rule.

Is that how others play it?

You are correct, 1 TK 4+ hit to everything in 5cm including the abattoir, which gets its LM save. Sounds odd that a crtical on the abattoir can be more benificial than harmful depending on its location.

Presumably the author intended that it's not an explosion that would completely destroy the Abattoir, but rather just part of it.

In the original Necron list in Raiders it says "Critical Hit: A capacitor explosion inflicts a TK hit on every unit within 5cm (including the Abattoir) on a D6 roll of 4+."

Where was your text from? It looks like someone made a mistake with the wording.

Only slightly. That's a damn good critical effect for a War Engine that likes to get stuck in the middle of enemy formations :P

The C'tans are way better! Boom and doom, I say. Of course, bad crits are the name of the game for the Necron. They are great when they work in your behalf, but when your own troops are close it isn't so great. And given the portal on the Abattoir, there is a good chance of that happening.

That's an amazing critical for a CC WE though! The Necron player will just move his troops no closer than 5cm to the Abbattoir, they're FF troops so can move away to one side even if they come out of it's portal.

The Epic-UK Abattoir critical is much more sensible and reasonable for the opponent - a 5+ hit on anything within 5 and just a regular hit, not TK. Yet another reason we find the Epic-UK Necron list more fair and balanced for our games here in New Zealand.

Had an entertaining game vs speed freeks once where the WE I close assaulted flipped over onto the attackers, killing most of them.

But less, this is another of those Necron crits where you charge in and hope someone crits it. Doesn't even destroy you...
