Johnny Rico - should do well against 'Nids! ?
We played AH's "Starship Troopers" game over and over! ? Great game and book... ?On the other hand... I limit my Close Combat troops in all nine of my Epic Armies... if they wanted us to go into hand-to-hand, why'd they give us ranged weapons?

Design philosophy in 40k seems to swing the other way - Why shoot them when you can hack them? Obviously, I think most people would have an answer for that. ?
EDIT: Also, for anyone interested, Mongoose Publishing acquired the rights to Starship Troopers, both the film and novel versions. Apparently they have some grand scheme to make fans of both Verhoeven and Heinlein happy at the same time - that's a fairly major undertaking. Anyways, RPG and wargame rules, with the latter being produced first along with some plastic miniatures and then more stuff.

I play (or, rather, hope to play someday... ) the CC happy Black Templars in 40k so obviously I'm biased. But still, 40K is the "Dark Ages in Space". Knights (Marines) and peasant militia (IG) with some fantasy elements added. In such a setting I don't find it so hard to accept the bias to close combat. If the same would be tried in the hard sci-fi of Stargrunt it would be ridiculous, but 40k is a different breed.
Besides, shooting does not capture anything. If you just stay put and blast away you don't gain any ground. Sooner or later you'll still have to get up close and personal, although admittedly that's best done when the enemy is keeping their head down because half of your guys are blasting away at them.
Back to Templars, I'm going to try and use my Command squad as the main fire support formation of the army with the Marshal giving hand to hand support in case they are charged.

Quote (Johnny Rico @ 01 2004 Mar.,20:23) | Question - as these are a new army can you mix them with Ultra Marines or do they have to fight as different forces? | Welcome to the boards. In tournament games, you would need to pick White Scars or Ultra Marines and they could not be on the same side. In you own games, anything goes. Personally, I would treat one of the forces as allies and allow up to 1/3 of the points on them, but if you want to mix and match then that is your choice.

Thanks for all your answers. Yes I am a big fan of Starship Troopers. I've had 5 copies of the book and lent out each one and never had them back. I can not find a copy of the book anywhere at the moment. Also had the AH game which was cool. Just so you all know, I have never played the normal Games Workshop 40K, but I find the Epic stuff irresistable - Real Wargaming to me.

Heinlein will always be the Grand Master to me. His stuff was the thing that got me hooked into science fiction (Have Spacesuit, Will Travel ), and I have been gobbling up anything I can get my grubby paws on since. As for the film version of Starship troopers, I was crying in the theatre when I saw it, so badly butchered it was. I also have several copies of the book (one of them is one of the original prints) and have a copy of the AH boxed game.
my 2cents,

I cant seem to d/l it from there...errors out!
Has anyone actually got a Whirescars army for Epic? They seem to eb a useful flank march type formation and a great Ally, but not a balanced whole of force option.

Not to get too far into it, but I'd say the movie would have made a far better movie if it wasn't titled Starship Troopers, as it wouldn't have made us expect what it obviously wasn't. Verhoeven et. al. approached military government from a fairly satirical PoV, whereas I felt Heinlein was trying to expound on the merits of civil duty through armed service.
At any rate, back to Epic. I must say, all things considered, that it is far more involving than 40k, not to mention cheaper, cooler looking, and generally deeper. So many times have we all thought, in 40K 'oh never mind, rush them' and it works for almost everyone. It's fun, but not as fun. Warmaster too, I just picked up recently. The intro demo I got a few years back bit, but the playing the game as it's meant to be played is also really, really enjoyable.
And Heinlein is THE MAN! The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and Starship Troopers are probably two of my favourite sf novels.

Quote (Legion 4 @ 03 2004 Mar.,00:51) | Good use of ranged weapons V ! ?And I say play 40K for a laugh ! ? And you are correct Mojarn, eventually you have to go toe-to-toe if you're going to capture an objective, but I'm sure you and most will agree, if you use ranged weapons properly, it will be easier because most of the enemy will be KIA/WIA ! ?And you got that right Rico ! ?Epic is real wargaming ! ?And as Tas and i/drax said ?Heinlein is real SF !!! ?I still have my copy of the book, but I'm not sure where our copy of the game went !!!? ? ? | Played my first game of 40k 3rd ed the other day, I played 2nd ed a decade ago and enjoyed it.
3rd ed sux... I positioned my entire army on a hill and just blew away the attacking speed freaks, when they finally got into combat my marines just wouldn't die. Then I counter attacked with some assault marines and slaughtered the Orks.
There was no tactics, no nothing, it was a souring experience, V40k all the way!!!! Dawn of Darkness WOOO!!!!
At least you have to manuever and use small scale tactics in those game systems. In DoD we never managed to have a CC yet there was plenty of manuevering going on .

Going off topic a bit, but I don't really have a problem with the dominance of CC in 40K. If we had Power Armour and the SM to wear it, we'd be using their tactics. CC breaks units a lot faster than firepower. The rest of the 40K system I do have a problem with (sequence of play, assault move, too many super weapons etc.), but that's for another thread.
As for the White Scars, those bike units seem way over powered to me. 3+ CC, same as an Assault Marine AND +1 attack? I know bikes already have 3+ CC but I always thought they should have 4+, same as regular marines. A suggestion has been to make them 1st strike instead of extra attack.
