Ever since they deserted and left the radiance of the Emperor the first and second regiment of the Steel Eagles has eluded the imperial troops. Ever since until now. A recognisances thunderbolt spotted a convoy deep in the Hammer Mountain. Immediately the blood angles readied a punish expedition to catch the spotted convoy and punish the traitors!

Moin,

Great report! Well done!

Any reason why you used the Space Marine list and not the blood angels one?

Ole

Well, it's mostly due to neither of us have very much experience playing with or against marines so we choose the basic one.

Great report! Interested to know why you think the SM are fragile? I have an IG and an SM army, and have always found the SM very resilient and tough as old boots. Sure their formations are smaller than the IG and they don't have the tanks/firepower to go toe to toe with a heavy tank company but that doesn't normally stop them!!

Also found it interesting that your IG had less activations than the SM.

I guess it might come down to that we played a lot IG vs Orks. And even though the individual marine in though and their formations is very resilient against harassing fire. We felt they the do not have the staying power of a huge ork formation or a mech IG company. If you happen to put a marine formation in a bad position and the opponent want it gone, it's gone. Just as you say, you have to back down from a slug out and rely on more hit and run than the IG.

Here is and example of what happened when we played the Marines more in your face style

Yes big formations v big formations is defo a different way to play rather than the way to play marines. The key with SM for me has always been stay mobile, and drop Termies on targets of opportunity. I love Dreads as well but only ever add them to Dev units, or Tacs if I intend to leave them sitting on an objective.

The lack of a TK weapon in SM is a sore point with me....

thanks for the report, always great to read them!

And Berkut666: You do realize that every list needs a downside? For marines it's not having alot of things that can deal with Titans/WE:s from far away... that forces a certain kind of playstyle thats supposed to emulate how marines are supposed to fight.

Fully aware - Doesn't mean I have to like it :)

I just find it odd that humanity's amazing genetically modified super soldiers wouldn't have something decent to take out WE. Wouldn't have to be a long range weapon per say, just something effective! Seems odd spending all that time, money and resources creating the ultimate fighting machine to then give all the best weapons to conscripts.

Have you seen what 4 terminators + a chaplain can do to a prepped warlord ? It ain't pretty! :-) and half the points. If that ain't a tk weapon it don't know what is.

Another problem I have with the Space Marines is how to handle their 'assault'-units. In this game the assault jump packs and the bikes. I had the plan that I would use them to mop up already damaged formation but they ended up just hoovering in the outskirts, looking for a prey and being a irritation for the guard, but no real threat. The chaplains definitely felt useless in this game. The problem I have with them is that they are rather small formations and I have trouble to find a suitable target to bully. But it's maybe just me that are afraid of loosing them.
