Hi

When I have a 4 stand terminator unit and add a commander or chaplain etc can they be based separately giving a 5 stand unit or do they have to be based on one of the 4 stands?

Characters are added to a stand so in your specific example you'd have 4 stands of terminators, one of which has a character. Another example would be adding a Captain to say a Land Raider. He goes in one of the land raiders, you don't get an extra stand.

From a modeling perspective you can put the character into the stand itself permanently (Chappys are so common in Terminators that I have done this). Another approach that some people take is to build a "min-stand" with the single character that is "stuck" along side the stand to show where the character is so that you can move them around in your collection.

with the advent of micro 'earth' magnets, some on the forums have been known to drill through the bottom of a hole in the base, then cover the underside of the base with tin foil and put a 2mm magnet on the underside of both a standard figure and the character allowing them to be swapped.

Have some mini magnets might give that a try, cheers with the dreadnought adding it to a squad it's just added nothing dropped?
Also when I add a vindicator to a tac squad for rhinos do I drop a rhino? Same for a hunter to a whirlwind platoon do I drop one or just add the hunter

Upgrades are generally additions to the formation.
For instance, if you take a Dread and add it to say a Devestator detachment in the Codex list you'd have 4 Devestator stands, 1 Dread, 2 Rhinos. Same deal with the Hunter. It gets added to the formation. It's not a replacement.

Basically marines get +transport which means that once all your upgrades are taken, you get enough Rhinos for free to carry the infantry stands in the formation lacking transport. You cannot take extras or empty rhinos.

So for example,

1 tactical formation + 1 Land Raider would be
6 tactical stands, 1 Land Raider, and 2 Rhinos (two stands in the LR, 4 still need a transport)

Another is
1 Tactical formation + 1 Razorback would be
6 tactical stands, 1 Razorback, and 3 Rhinos (one stand in the Razorback, 5 still need a transport hence the 3 rhinos)

As Vindicators cannot carry Marines it doesn't have any effect on Rhinos.

The point is that "Characters" effectively replace a single figure on a base. All the other items are units in their own right, so these upgrades add extra units to the formation

I had a similar issue. I resolved it using metal stands for infantrz models and magnetic foil.

I based all units in the detachment this way but if you do not want to use them in 6mm skirmish games you can use this on a single base for commanders only :)

sorry guys one last thing, the Dreadnought say in my example its attached to a devastator platoon, does it travel in the rhinos or does it have to plod along behind,

same type of example, terminators in a thunderhawk with Dreadnought upgrade, can it travel along with them?

Dreads are only transportable in thunderhawks or landing craft so with devs it would have to walk and slow the formation down

If in a thunderhawk with terminators the terminators take up two transport slots each so there is no room for a dread

Dreds and Termies occupy 2x slots in THawk and Landing Craft, but only one slot in Space cruiser or Battle Barge. So, in theory you could put the entire 1st company (5x Terminator formations) into a Space Cruiser and planetfall the lot onto a table in 5x THawks for a cool 2950, leaving 50 points for a commander to provide the BTS.
"Yes" it has been tried, and "No" it is not necessarily a viable tournament army for various reasons - but it is 'fun' :)

Dreds do make useful updates to Devs, but also tend to dictate the focus of the formation's mission:-
- Devs with 2x Dreadnoughts and a Hunter on OW can make a very strong garrison force.
- Alternatively Devs with 1-2 Dreads can be drop-podded from a Space Cruiser as a strong support to assaults

Being AV, Dreads also provide cover to the Devs, though the formation can now be shot by more weapons. So basically you have to change the way you use the formation.
