Can a formation go over its initial formation size when swarming?

Eg. you have two formations of tyranids, each with say 5 hormagaunts and 5 termagants. In the first turn one formation is completely destroyed, while the other lose one hormagaunt and one termagant. Can the other formation swarm back 2 critters or as many as there are in the swarming pool?(provided there are enough synapse critters in the formation)

I believe they can, the idea is it represents stragglers regrouping and joining another formation as much as anything else.

In the NetEA list, swarming allows you to replace units of the types that were originally in the formation. As Alf says, I would also expect that you could add more than the original number of units up to the limit of that type in the army, so potentially if your army started of with all the swarms containing just Termagants and Synapse creatures, you could return all the 'dead' Termagants back to the same swarm and potentially end up with a monster swarm, though there are a lot of things that limit this size.

Note in the E-UK lists, there is no 'swarming' so this would not apply.

It can, but it can't swarm back brood creatures that weren't in the formation at the start of the game like Ginger says (unless you're using the 2014 playtest 'nid list where that was dropped).

Great. Then I didn't cheat in my last game :)

I would be nice if the Swarming rule was specific about this, but my opponent and I talked about it and agreed to play it that way.

I lost anyway, so it wouldn't have made any significant difference :D
