G'day All,

Here's some pictures of our ongoing game, I have my Iron Hands, CAL has his World Eaters and Sethanon has rolled out a small selection of his Orks (6K worth!)

Here are some of the deployment shots:

The full spread, using a larger board, 6K of orks can almost fit into a deployment zone :)
Image

Close ups of ork forces advancing south. Ork infantry have moved in unseen in the night and are concealed in terrain and folds in the earth.
**Legion Intel Comment: Tactics may suggest the force is under Blood axe leadership despite identified clan markings, will continue to monitor known ork frequencies, captured signal traffic suggest ork "Great gargant" as a likely C2 node.**

The Legions split their forces, the IH setup to hold the river and buildings whilst the WE aim to clear the orks from the western plains and then encircle around to the north and into the ork rear.
Image

The turn started with some WE basilisk fire landing on ork vehicles and some ork aircraft making attack runs on the IH recon formations. In the east the IH advanced some predator tanks up towards the river bank to try and draw a reaction from the warband but the orks kept their heads down and stayed hidden in the undergrowth. Despite cover from Hyperios missile systems the orks flew in another squadron of fighta bombers and some deathkoptas destroying two preadators after which the armoured recon units withdrew.

In the open ground to the west a number of ork buggy and guns wagon mobs advanced towards the WE at speed. The WE armour and mechanised infantry advanced to meet them and after some heavy fire power from both sides a number of Sicaran tanks and lots of ork vehicels were left burning on the sand. The WE were also supported by the IH thunderhawk which made its presence felt killing 4 buggies when the ork flak wagons fled in the aftermath of the tank duel. Hot on its heals was the ork lander, similarly coming in to strafe WE positions with guns and rockets. Two Primaris Lightnings followed it down, laying into the ork flyer with las and auto cannon rounds - chunks of scrap flew off its sides but the craft leveled out to make its attack run, wounding yet more WE.
Image

In the centre the orks hand made some early gains into the building complex with buggies and storm boys getting among the structures. A blitz brigade also moved onto the nearby hill and killed some WE tanks with their mekboy creations. Thankfully, FOR THE EMPEROR!, the IH had a unit of Medusa and Vindicator tanks positioned directly to the south on the road and they moved up to unload their guns into Orks. A unit of WE landraiders advanced as speed and destroyed a number of the gun wagons on the ridge. They also called in some arty from the IH whirlwinds on the approaching gargant and buggies. The legionary advance into the buildings was further supported by WE infantry in rhinos and the Iron hands fellblades. By the end of the exchange, the Legions succeeded in removing the lighter ork forces from the immediate vicinity. However, a greater force, including a Gargant were marshaling just to the north and across the river.
Image

To prevent the orks swarming across the river, IH astartes took up positions in a bunker complex to the south east of the bridge and prepared to deny the orks crossing. Their scanners had picked up a lot of contacts moving south but as yet the orks hadn't presented themselves in numbers. The bunker positions were further reinforced with a number of hvy support squads, landraiders and the remainder of the landspeeders moved to a position in depth ready to counter attack.

In what was probably the calm before the storm, the remaining ork contacts moved up slowly or held position readying for an attack. A number of orks were already pulling back out of contact but significant forces are now ready to assault the Legions.

Turn 2

Maintaining initiative in the battle over the buildings, the marines push forward their two heavy armour formations in the land raiders and fell blades. The gargant is lit up with explosions, its powerfields crackle and die, then rounds start to hit home and the gargant catches fire.
Image

In response its three large cannons fire back at the tightly packed marine armour. The fire is inaccurate but still disables a landraider and damages a fellblade, the immense concussion of the rounds stuns a number of Legion crews. Gretchin riggers poor from the gargant in an attempt to douse flames and restore damaged systems. Before the marines can re-engage the gargant they are forced to defend themselves against an well co-ordinated ork air assault. The lander crashes down amidst the marine tanks and orks scramble all over the tanks whilst crews fight them off with bolters and knifes.
Image

The WE landraider crews dismount to fight the orks toe to toe. The iron hands realise the tactical disadvantage and back away from the lander whilst laying down suppressive fire. The orks loose a number to the fellblades and WE crews but in the end all the WEs are wiped out and a fell blade is lost in spectacular explosion when its demolisher cannon ammo is set off by tankbuster bombs. The remaining two tanks pull back under heavy fire from the Lander.

The initial shock of the ork assault is short lived and the supporting WE infantry rush forwards to engage the orks before they can consolidate their hold in the buildings. The WE, now in their element dismount and fight the orks with bolt pistol and chain blade whilst the nearby IH medusa lend supporting fire. The orks counterchage from the wrecks of armoured vehicles and a large melee ensures. The orks fight to the last but in the end the WEs are victorious and even get aboard the lander killing the few remaining crew before it can take off.

Whilst this is happening the ork fighta bombers return to strafe the WE jet bikes knocking out two before the bikers can scatter. As the fightas pull up from their attack run they are engaged by the returning primaris lightnings. They imperial pilots knock out two but the third escapes and powers away.
Image

Back in the centre the WE are regrouping but the gargant still looms over them. The IH Medusa push through the WE lines to engage and score a number of hits on the gargant but they seem to have little effect. On the other side of the buildings the vindicators advance up towards the bridge to start engaging the ork positions on the other side of the river. A number of orks are killed but scanners still indicate many more hidden in the undergrowth.
Image

A second wave of fighta bombers then arrive and attack the medusa as they reload. A tankbuster rocket hits home causing a bigger secondary explosion that destroys the SPG and its crew. Concerned of an imminent attack across the bridge, the IH infantry commander tries to set up his platoon to cover the river and bridge but some movement on the opposite bank triggers a heavy response from his support elements. Realising they're wasting precious munitions he orders the cease fire. When the smoke clears the effect on the ork positions is negligible.
Image

Further across the river tree tops can be seen falling as heavy ork vehicles advance through the woods. The IH commander is concerned about them massing near the bridge so sends the landraiders forward to block further progress. Near the bridge the landraiders are also able to draw a bead on the Gargant's flank and the lead two vehicles open fire but the gargant still stands though it is now heavily wreathed in fire.

At this time a number of fast ork vehicles are observed to be moving east to west in the north. This data is passed to the whirlwind crew but they are out of range. They then re-orientate and fire into the woods hoping to catch some orks in their hiding spots.

Out on the plains the WE set up an engagement area to the west of the building complex with their remaining sicaran tanks and landspeeders, as the gargant and warband slowly advances. The WE's heavy mechanised infantry formation pushes down the flank to engage the gargant and the two groups exchange fire. The engagement drops a number of shields on the gargant and a sicaran is knocked out. The jetbikes move up in support, ready to counter attack any orks who may challenge the spartans but their approach is drowned out by the IH thunderhawk as it overflys the WE, cannons and sponsons blazing away at the ork gargant. The thunderhawk momentarily touches down and four contemptor dreadnoughts leap from the ramp. Working in pairs they spread out and fire into the giant construct, chewing out chunks of the walker with assault cannons and missiles whilst the thunderhawk powers back into the sky.
Image

Back on the east the IH speeders probe across the river and pop up over the trees to fire into the ork infantry once again. Shortly after the smaller ork gargant crumbles in on itself, the head now too heavy for its blasted and fire stricken torso to hold up. Shortly after, of the construct's heavy arm cannons fall into the river in a great gout of water and steam. Somewhat relieved, the WE and IH infantry around the city take the opportunity to treat wounded and redistribute ammunition.
Image

Unfortunately the IH tanker crews aren't so lucky, both the predators and fellblades have taken damage to critical systems and the techmarines are still trying to rectify the damage.

Turn 3

The WE Spartans and landraiders halt and unleash a barrage into the ork great garant, hoping to knock it out with massed las cannon fire. The gargant however has other ideas and trundles forward, blasting back with cannons while the lifta droppa locks onto a sicaran and sends it flying through the air. The contemptors also poor fire into the great gargant but their rounds lack sufficient stopping power. The ork infantry surrounding it bellow and roar, the WE infantry prepare to disembark but the ork horde expands then contracts, seemingly unsure what to do. They close on the WE and move within effective small arms range but don't make it into hand to hand.
Image

From behind the gargant come more buggies, these race out in front of the contemptors who shred one in a long burst of assault cannon fire. Before the second buggy can be taken out the gargant fires at close range. 3 Dreadnoughts are obliterated but one remains standing, defiant. He continues to engage the orks before a second salvo from the gargants left arm blows him down. He doesn't rise. The orks cheer, the WE continue firing.

North of the buldings, more ork vehicles move up onto the ridge line and engage the IH medusa. Two are destroyed before they can withdraw. The WE infantry see this and charge forwards, their pistols, grenades and flamers surprisingly effective against the ork's thrown together vehicles. Some legionnaires are killed but the orks are again routed from the ridge.
Image

Near the bridge the IH whirlwinds again target ork positions but their light rockets seem to do little against them. Ork deathkopters fly in from the eastern flank and catch the landspeeder crews off guard. Thankfully their accuracy is terrible and the landspeeders escape serious harm. The Landraiders move up to the bridge to target the stomper mob at the T intersection. They fail to knock any out and the orks return fire destroying the lead land raider on the bridge, another is lost when it moves to effect the recovery. The vindicators continue firing into ork infantry positions on the other side of the river, as does the IH infantry. The ork casualties are slowly mounting but there is still a strong presence holding the northern bank.
Image

Seeing the plight of the landraider crews the speeders push forwards to engage the eastern most ork positions in the woods. Using flamers and melta weapons they burn out a few of the close positions without receiving any effective return fire and set the woods on fire. Despite still being strong in number the ork horde obviously has no interest in being burnt to death and withdraw to the T intersection and the protection of the vast Stompa mob. Their task complete the IH speeders move back over the river.
Image

In the west the WE speeders move up to engage the ork infantry supporting the great gargant. They kill a number of orks with missiles and heavy bolter rounds but are quickly scattered by yet more ork fighta bombers. The orks circle back for a second pass, downing four of the five vehicles. The orks infantry are also engaged by the remaining sicaran tanks at max range, yet more boys are killed but for everyone that goes down, two more seem to spring forward.

The IH thunderhawk returns for another pass over the battlefield and is directed down to neutralise the death kopter threat. Caught out in the open, the thunderhawk downs three in a single pass and the remainder withdraw.

WE Basilisks fire on the ork warband near the gargant as a lone ork speedster zips through the city to flank the WE sicarans engaging the ork infantry. The speedster fires and the shot hits home, destroying another WE vehicle. The speedster is in turn taken out by IH infantry as they secure the buildings.

Image

The ork attack into the buildings from the north has been halted, the river crossing is firmly guarded by IH tanks. In the plains to the west the orks and WE continue to trade fire but the orks are retiring from the field. Casualties have become too high, even for a race like the orks, and their commander decides to try his luck another day. The Legions have multiple issues of their own to deal with so for now they will consolidate their gains... The orks will be shadowed by the few remaining land speeders whilst the IH and WE infantry get busy recovering the wounded and dead.

Imperial victory 2:0 - They shall not pass and Defend the flag

Overall it was a fun game friendly game over a couple of nights. I enjoyed getting a chance to use the legion list again and trying it against a xenos threat. It was also good to see so many painted models on the table for once. Soon I'll post up some more thoughts on the legion units but for now I hope you enjoyed the read.

Cheers
