I'm looking into starting a Tau army but am little unsure how big the different battlesuits are. I'm going to proxy the army and will probably use Onslaught Miniatures for a lot of the models, although I'm looking into other ranges as well. So how big are the XV8 and XV88 Battlesuits, for example in comparison with other regular Epic miniatures? And if you have any good ideas as to which models would do a good proxy please share...

These should have proxies for anything you'd need at roughly the right size.

Yeah I know about Onslaught, but I'm not sure about the different sizes of Battlesuits. Particularly the difference in size between a Crisis Battlesuit and a Broadside Battlesuit.

At the time the list was conceived Broadsides and Crisis suits used the same frame so there wasn't any difference in size. Even now, at this scale the size difference would be very small...

Ah, that would help a lot actually. I've been looking at 40K models and found it difficult to emulate the differences, both between Tau models and between Tau models and eg Space Marine models.

That is really a great looking army you've got going there. My ambition level is considerably smaller :)

Now I come to think of it, the main visual giveaway - apart from how they're armed - would be that ordinarily there'd be one Broadside to a base and three crisis suits to a base. That's by no means a hard and fast rule though - plenty of people base crisis one to a base either because of the scarcity of the FW models or because the onslaught models for example are a bit bigger. In the case of the onslaught models there are sufficiently different models available that you shouldn't have any problem telling them apart, particularly if you follow Commander Sims' lead and have the Crisis leaping all over the place!
