Just in case people are keeping an eye on here, I'm afraid I may be a little late turning up today, hopefully be there by ten!

Thanks to all who attended, Steve for his usual top-notch organising and reffing, Sanctuary gaming for hosting (although srsly guys you need some heaters) and Kev101, Consul Avenging angel and RichardL for three enjoyable games!

Game 1 - Kev101 (Dark Angels)

After plotting my barrage and pods I watched as Kev set up the meat of his army right where I'd plotted it! The pie-plates worked their magc and after my devs podded in, kev had blast markers all over the shop and some broken whirlwinds, I pressed my advantage and wiped out a unit of devs with my terminators, but then kev dropped his aircraft, wiping out my terminators (and losing three of his own) and blatting my devs with his assault marines, turn 2 belonged to Kev, he hit me hard and really pinned me down, although my warlord parked between my T&H objectives and fwoomed a landraider, Kev then vacuumed up his termy amd land raiders and some nearby assault marines with his landing craft, and promptly got them shot down by a single Tbolt attempting to assault the scouts guarding my blitz, by the end of turn 4 we were almost mutually wiped out but neither could secure the win, a winning draw to me in the end

Game 2 - Consul Avenging Angel

Another brutal affair, my warlord managed to get on to the objectives and go on overwatch, pinning Tom's poor preds behind a hill, then we set to kicking seven shades of crap out of each other, my tbolts were their usual heroic selves, shooting down a thawk loaded with termies, again after pushing to 4 turns, we ran out of steam (and formations left alive!) and I claimed a winning draw again

Game 3 - RichardL (AMTL)

I knew I had to hide in this game, my warlord spent most of the game being pursued round the table by Richard's warlord and plasma reaver like something out of Benny Hill, I managed to drag it out to four turns but then threw away my chance at a draw by bringing my thawk on early when I should have dropped it to contest my blitz after Richard ran out of activations.... my warlord barely survived, on 1DC with an outstanding crit but it repaired and Richard claimed a 2-0 win on turn 4

I finished 8/14 overall

So before the weekend disappears into the mists of my mind, a quick report on my games.

I took my Vanaheim as detailed in my post earlier on in this thread with the idea of humming the Ride of the Valkyries all the way through the day. Things started well:

Game 1: vs Rob (BT Eldar)
Rob was playing with a Warlock, two Void Spinners, two Falcons (with Firestorms), two Guardians (1 hvy & 3 hvy weapon platforms), four Rangers and Shining Spears (inc Exarch & Autarch) hiding away in a Webway.

I spread out my objectives and Rob kept his grouped ready for the Warlock to claim them. Game started with the Eldar winning the SR and immediately failing to activate one of the Void Spinners... I then threw my first set of Thunderbolts at Rob’s Fire Prisms only to lose one and not shoot due to jinking. We traded formations on my right flank with a formation of Vultures being lost to falcons who where then wiped out by a mounted infantry company. The Shining Spears then charged out of the portal and engaged the company forgetting that the infantry could jump out. The shock of the number of FF dice tripling disheartened the SS and the Exarch and Autarch were left broken and alone. My remaining air craft made a beeline for the autarch as the AA cover on that flank was now missing.

The game then settled down to me feeding the Warlock cheap formations whilst trying to remove all the other Eldar activations. I picked up a lucky critical on a Void Spinner and managed to break the Fire Prisms, Rangers, Guardians, Falcons and 2nd Spinner resulting in a 3-0 win at the end of turn 3.

It was a good result although Rob had been handicapped with the lack of aircraft and early Spears mistake.

This propelled me up to playing MikeT on the top table.

Game 2 vs Orks

Mike’s list
Gunzmob+Nobz+Flakwagon+Warlord
Stompa Mob+Supa Stompa+Flakwagon
Big KoS (16 Skorchas)
Big KoS (16 Skorchas)
Blitz Brigade (2 Gunwagon, 2 Flakwagon)+Oddboz(Zzap)
Blitz Brigade (2 Gunwagon, 2 Flakwagon)+Oddboz(Zzap)
Warband+Nobz+Boyz+Grotz
Warband+Nobz
3 fighta bommerz
3 fighta bommerz
Landa
Landa

This was a frustrating game as I managed to fail four of my first five activation rolls and just neaver felt that I got into the game. Mike did a great job on holding his air assaults back to late in the second turn which gave him BTS as he sent one in to draw off the Overwatch and CAP and the second to wipe the Reg HQ out. I probably wasted my Vultures shooting at the two Blitz Bridages, especially as I only killed two vehicles each time. Mike also had the toughest Gunzmob that I have ever come across and I’ve played Yme-Loc and Evil & Choas’ Orks. They took a full formation’s shooting and laughed off all the shots bar one which hit and was saved. We knocked lumps off each other but could not push for a win either way resulting in a complete draw.

I was too offensive with my aircraft in the game and should have used CAP for at least the first two turns. However, if you can’t activate them then you don’t get to use them. Oh and I’ve never taken 32 Skorchas to a tournament.

Still within a shout for the tournament I dropped down a table to play MarkP.

Game 3 vs AMTL

Warlord Titan (Volcano, 2 Turbolasers, Plasma Destructor)+Carapace Multialsers+Princeps
Reaver Titan (Rocket Launcer+Plasma Destructor+Turbolaser)+Princeps+Carapace Multilasers
Warhound (2 x Inferno)
Warhound (Megabolter, Plasma Blastgun)
Robots
Robots
Thunderbolts
Thunderbolts

I’ll be honest, I looked across the table and thought, 8 activations, 24 models, I know how to take this army apart. I then proceeded to totally fail and not stick to any sort of sensible battle plan. I aimed to strip the AMTL of activations, destroying the Warhounds and Robots to leave the Warlord and Reaver without the coverage to prevent me winning.

What actually happened was that my shooting failed again, the first turn I could only destroy a Thunderbolt and single robot, whilst Mark spread out across the table to cut down the areas where I could hide my forces. I continued to push but was running out of AT fire whilst losing vehicles and infantry. I managed to hold the game to a draw at the end of the third turn, but was crushed during the fourth to lose 4-0.

It was an enjoyable game for trying to work out how to beat your opponent, but what I should have done is to concentrate on Mark’s aircraft in turn 1. Then used the Vultures on the Warhounds in turn 2 and turn three worked on the robots. All the time falling back from the main titans.

I really like playing with the Vanaheim, but the lack of ground based AA is a real killer especially when you fail to activate your planes onto CAP.

Oh well simple army for the next tournament as it’s a long drive down to Bristol from North Yorkshire.

Well done Mark on your first tournament win and thanks also to Mike and Rob for three great games.

I almost certainly won't make Counterattack in Bristol, but was looking at the others. Are Roll Call, Challenge and Expo all two day events... the 2014 Schedule also lists them as 3k events? Not sure I can negotiate four full weekends away.

My little review

Game 1 Vs Steve (Marines) Lost 2-0 Turn 3
After a fairly unspectacular orbital bombardment from Steve (he still hit something though, guided by his witch-like powers no doubt), I launched a bold air-assault with a spirit host against a warhound on the far flank... and knocked down a single shield. It was then that I made a major mistake and threw my storm serpent at his army - throwing more activations at a failed plan is not a good idea - it was killed, and the cobra was picked off without ever firing a shot. It wasn't looking too terrible until another stupid mistake in turn three, when I should have sent my phantom to Steve's blitz, but again sent it after a another failed plan. Steve claimed defend to flag and broke everything in his half... needed the phantom to rally to force a fourth turn, it didn't, giving Steve they shall not pass.

Game 2 Vs Kev (Marines) Lost 2-1 Turn 4
More marines, but this time with a lander. Turn one went really well for the Eldar, until a squad of four assault marines inflicted 3 wounds on my phantom. Kev's BTS of terminators with landraiders in a lander pounced on the phantom and killed it. I then three over a third of my army at that BTS but failed to kill it - I did manage to get my Spirit Troupe (that's the six wraithlords) out of the storm serpent and into base-to-base with the terminators, so that was fun. In fact, I managed to deploy three formations out of the storm serpent, being paired with a cobra meant it was easier to push it forward and keep it alive (that one AA6 on the cobra is a surprising anti-air deterrent as well). On turn three, Kev failed to bring the lander (and surviving three terminators with two landraiders) on - the cobra AA blast marker at work. Turn three had another blow for the eldar when the avatar assaulted some scouts and with one shot was criticalled putting a BM on every (yes, every) formation on the table). A gambit for Kev's blitz in turn four came up 3cm short... but the lander and BTS got my blitz (Kev on two goals), I could only manage take and hold to reduce the loss.

Game 3 Vs Tom C (IG) Win 4-0 Turn 3
Tom had two tank companies, so a lot of points in a few powerful but slow formations. Unfortunately, he never managed to get them working together - starting slightly too far apart. The eldar then cheated with their double retain to wipe out a infantry company in ruins (cobra ignore cover was a star here), bring a spirit host out of a web way to soften a tank company and then bring the spirit toupe out of the storm serpent to assault the tanks. The IG Mech HQ had been crippled by an air assault. Turn three involved consolidation moves from the eldar, and the Tom didn't have enough left... the BTS tank company could only deal with one formation, but was out of position. With a sneaky rangers shot against some sentinels (no saves allowed due to sniper) I managed to claim defend to flag and they shall not pass on top of the blitz and take and hold.

A very enjoyable day - if not damn cold, thermals will be bought next time. I think the phantom is made of paper... or I can't make 3+ saves often enough, but I really like the cobra and storm serpent duo. Plus, spirit troupes are cool.

Roll Call (nr Oxford) is a 2 dayer, Challenge is a 1 dayer with separate gaming day on the sunday, expo is a one dayer. All are 3k, we'll most probably add a 4k next year when we have more idea of the schedule possibilities at the BHGS events.

I'm confused now:

Challenge is near Oxford and on 5th/6th April not Roll Call
