As to arced lightning there was someone on the boards that had one of the best ork armies I've ever seen (sorry I forget who it was now) that had shock guns and weirdboy towers with arcs everywhere made from wire. Pretty clever and effective. Go dig around and you'll find it.

Was it Largo_W's fantastic Ork army maybe?

Why thank you, sir!

I'll be posting some pictures of my Thawks and Dreadnaughts when I get home from work this afternoon...as well as a retinue of CSMs

As promised...took a while to get my flash working, sorry for the poor lighting in the first few pics
>.<

The Thunderhawks
Image

The each have a slightly different lightning pattern, everything is free-handed. I didn't quite get a desired "glow" effect on them, but it's something i'm sure I can work on over time.

Some closer shots

The Dreadnaughts

I picked up most of the army second hand...it was originally painted up at Blood Angels, and these two little beauties were a part of it. We've dubbed them Ancient Jim and Ancient Steve. Jim is that guy that everyone loved, and was excited for him to become a 'naught. Steve, well, nobody likes Steve, but he sticks around anyways. He's certainly had his way with a few Lictors!

The Retinue

This is sort of how I imagine the whole army looking. I went with just white on the marines, because they looked a little green viewing them at tabletop distance with yellow (I tested this with a Terminator stand). If you look close, you can see i sort of free handed the Night Lords symbol on the supreme commander stand's banners.

to give you a bit of a better idea of how they look from tabletop distance-ish

For those of you wondering about the color scheme...

Gunmetal Blue by Vallejo is the main color for the army...1) I decided i wanted a slight metallic shine to them, and 2) I got two bottles as a gift.

Shining/Burnished Gold by Citadel
Boltgun Metal (or whatever it's called these days) by Citadel
Skull White by Citadel
annnd I forget the name of the yellow off hand, but it's the new medium yellow by Citadel.

Nuln Oil for the wash.

Since the lightning on everything breaks up the model so well, and the blue shines through the wash so well, and I want that dark, night sky look to the blue, I don't do much highlighting, which is evident on the 'naughts and thawks. It'll be even more evident on the Land Raiders and Predators, when I get around to finishing those.

I think I'll try the recommended wire technique, and do some arcing lightning on the bigger models, and maybe man to man for the marines? Food for thought.

Hmm, gunmetal blue... I might have to pick up jar. I like the color.

Today I picked up some wire to make lightning out of. I lacked objective markers, so I decided to begin there.

I cut a few lengths of wire, twisted it together, and wrapped it in a long, thin strip of painter's tape to cover up the twist. I then put squadron putty on the base, and painted the wire white after bending it artfully.
Image

The next step, after a very long wait, was to make the lightning yellow and the base black.
Image

Then I used a spare Space Marine, glued a wire to his back, base coated him green, and then glued that onto the base.
Image

Lastly, I did a lot of highlighting and light sourcing on the marine from the lightning, painted a slurry of white glue and water onto the base, and covered it in sand and gravel. Then I did some more light sourcing and now I'm just waiting on the glue to dry.
Image

Working on the objective gave me a better idea of how pliable my wire is going to be. Next iss working on some arcing effects on some of my land raiders and the titan.

Let me know what you think!

Here's the arcing lightning on a test land raider.

I think I like the look of it. I went white, yellow, then a very thin white coat over the yellow again. Zip kicker was my friend here. I'm trying to think on how to take it to the next level with the titan...one of the guys suggested that it could imply void shields, and I find i like the mental imagery of that. However, I think it means that there's going to need to be a lot more than a few little bumps. It's going to be a lot of trial and error.

I really like the arcing lightning on the land raider. I also like the marine that got zapped on your objective. The green paint job kind of makes it look like one of Dave's.

That is a great start on the Land Raider!

Your objective made me giggle, haha
Totally looking forward to it been done!

About the lightning pattern in general, i would suggest adding a small line of white in the middle of each arc.
That ads to the 'zzzap'! :)

So, this has been an interesting weekend...I split with the boyfriend, and I'm starting a new job on Monday, so I decided to take today off from my second job (working at my LGS) and just relax and work on the titan. I based him last monday.
Image

I decided on 26 gauge wire, because A) it's thick enough that it'll still be visible, B) it's thin enough to be easily pliable, and most importantly C) it was all I could find that was really suitable at the craft store. ::)

I made heavy use of insta-set on the super glue, so that I wasn't going to be stuck holding a filddly piece of wire that I'd probably glue to myself.

I started from the back. There wasn't a whole lot of detail back there, so I felt safe going with a big lightning strike arcing all the way to the ground.
Image

I started working my way around, clockwise. Got some arcs up onto the shoulder pad, and an arc from the left foot onto the ground.
Image
Followed by an arc to the head from his body, and from the gun to his right shoulder.
Image

I felt the big strike in the back needed balancing in the front, so I went with a smaller strike off of the tip of his gun, and also arced from the hand to the leg, and then put another arc on the inside of his right leg. That essentially finished all that I wanted to add, I didn't want to overwhelm the model.
Image

I reinforced the twisted wire with superglue, which also served to smooth it out a bit. Here's a shot of the finished wire arcs from the back.
Image

I primed the wire white once it was dry, and then hit it with a coat of yellow, and then again with a very thin coat of white.
Image
Image
Image
Image

Lastly, I wanted to tie the lightning into the ground. I made a wash of yellow, traced some lines on the ground from where the lightning was hitting, and then hit that with a thin stripe of white after it dried.

The finished product:

Good idea about the effects on the ground. Don't be afraid to arc some off the ground up too.

Sorry for the disappearance, life was a little hectic the last couple of months, and the only things I was working on were top secret. ;)

This latest bit, however, is not!

Image

Two Warmachine Nightwretches, plus 4 CSM bolt guns (2 left handed, 2 right), equals acceptable Warhound proxies, right? I couldn't find actual Warhounds, and I wanted to start playing with them. The Privateer Press models are about the correct height and base size, but they lacked the appropriate weapons. After finding one boltgun in a pile of bits at my LGS, a buddy of mine came through for my with the other 3, even left handed ones! Those had knives attached to them, so I trimmed them off. I ended up drilling all the way through (luckily it was plastic, so it didn't take forever) and pinning the guns on with 3/32 aluminum tube/rod, because that is what fit the mounting hole in the guns.

So here's my problem. I have no idea how the hell I want to paint these things up. Part of me wants them to fit in with the rest of the army and go with the lightning-on-blue motif with gold/bronze for the metal (with boltgun-colored boltguns, of course), or go with a different color that still ties in, like a red (grabbing from the wings on the helmets of the Night Lords). Definitely looking for people's advice and guidance on this decision. I've only got them base-coated for now, to see the color on the models.
