I am looking to expand my SM and IG armies so decided to get some Titan action on the go. I already have 1 war hound, and was thinking of investing in a Imperator.

Undoubtably they are cool, but as they are going for big money on eBay my question is are they any good on the battlefield? We typically do 3k-4k matches and the points cost is very high for one but is it worth it?

Also, any thoughts on best usage of one? The few matches I have been in against any titans they seem to end up playing a control sections of battlefield and soak up bullets rather than an active role.

If it isn't awesome, house rule it until it is. :)

at 4k maybe,

An imperator will always end up playing control, becuase 1) it's not very fast and 2) no enemy wants to play anything else with it!

you cant add an imperator to space marine or IG armies without a house rule
in my experience, I have never had a game where an imperator has not dominated. despite their massive points cost, I would say they are probably undercosted by about a third

@Jaggedtoothgrin yeah we had agreed a house rule for them so I could potentially use it.

That powerful!? Wow. Would they still be the same in among a load of SM's and IG's?

Its hard to say, maybe my experience with them is unusual. but they've always been really really effective when I've seen them on the table
So I'm not sure. they may well be worse. as it stands, their biggest weakness is that they're very expensive, and thus, limited activations available to stop your opponent outmaneuvering you. with cheap activation options (beyond sentinels) they would have a greater chance of stopping your opponent from avoiding them, but there would also be weaker elements of the list for the opponent to target too.
but yeah, I'd not go so far as to say my experience is typical, but it really does dish out a truly absurd amount of firepower each turn and it can take a fairly morale shattering amount of firepower to kill too

(examples: in a "two imperators and a few little things vs a bunch of gargants" the imperators could each kill a gargant a turn with full plasma charge (so essentially, two imperators killed 5 gargants over 3 turns, thats about 1000 points more in kills than their cost)
in another game, an imperator soaked up pretty much the entire firepower of a 5000 point minervan list for 3 straight turns, just marshalling to regain shields, and torching a tank company every time they poked their heads out. eventually it blew up, but it held up about 4 times its points cost for almost an entire game)

when you compare what an imperator can do, vs what a warlord can do, it comes out way ahead. I'd say they should be atleast 1.5k each, maybe so much as 1750

but, I usually play 4-5k games, they might be restrictive enough at 3k to not be so overpowered

True I guess but in a 3k match the would reduce your activations due to the high points value but if you could get in range of the enemy....

I thing its a bit overpowered... not in point costs, but its hard to impossible to beat it on the battlefield. Although your opponent will be able to field 4-5 additional activations, the firepower is more or less enough to wipe out one formation per turn and it really doesn´t matter if it is just IG Infantry or a Warlord Titan ;)

You should make sure, that your opponent fields a super heavy titan as well... otherwise the game won´t be much fun... promised ;)

btw... a funny list, i tried out once Nine Activations on 3K including an Imperator and AA:

EMPEROR TITAN [1250]
Imperator Configuration

REAVER TITAN [650]
3 Turbolaser Destructor

WARHOUND TITAN [275]
Vulcan Megabolter, Plasma Blastgun

WARHOUND TITAN [275]
Vulcan Megabolter, Plasma Blastgun

RECON PLATOON [100]
4 Sentinels

RECON PLATOON [100]
4 Sentinels

SKITARII DEMI-CENTURY [100]

THUNDERBOLT FIGHTERS [150]
2 Thunderbolts

RECON PLATOON [100]
4 Sentinels
