I thought new Necron proxy models were exciting and desirable enough to deserve a new thread. Good 'ole GrimDarkBits - link here.

Check out his many other new models too. Caution - white strong and flexible, which he uses as the default material option, has the texture of sandpaper and isn't recommended if you care about quality models.

Ask him? Perhaps they're work in progress and not quite finished?

Is there any hope of this stuff ever becoming more affordable in the UK? Postage is an absolute nightmare on it.

I am placing an order soonish. If you like we could share shipping.
Send me a PM if you're up for it :)

Thanks, but I am still all tapped-out from the panic buying.

Yeah there's some inconsistencies with GDB. We know he/she/they have enough talent when you see the BFG stuff and now this. However when you see things like his 6mm line it makes you wonder. I'm curious if what's happening is that they're trying to get stuff out the door and then going to revise the look later.

A few coats, applied by brush, of a gloss acrylic varnish does the job well of getting a smooth finish.
This same method is used for the 1/1800 scale War At Sea naval miniatures on Shapeways and it works well.
You still won't have the level of detail of GW Epic40k era or water mammal constructs.

Hi ladies and gents, I'm here in the flesh, it's awesome to see people talking about my models!

I have definitely been working faster to get more models out since GW's recent and disastrous decision for specialist games, but mostly I've been doing 6mm scale.

With the printing technology available on Shapeways, this scale pushes the limits of the printers. There's no point in adding additional detail that won't be seen, or could even make the model unprintable by adding features too thin to print.

Other artists might be doing it better, but I've been aiming to make tabletop quality models as quickly and cheaply as possible for all the gamers who need them now. So let me know what you'd like to see done. Feedback is always welcome and appreciated!

- GDB

Hey great to have you stop through. There's a large 6mm community of players (read: modelers) but there's also some very accomplished CAD guys here as well. I'm sure you will have plenty to talk about.

However this=>

is nowhere close to where the 6mm proxies are. Look around on the Casting and Modeling sub-forum and you'll see just how detailed people here are printing stuff.

Now that being said, personally I want to see you get some more ships out there, mate! :D

Welcome aboard!

Hi GDB. The guys here know what kind of detail a Shapeways FUD model can hold - details down at the 0.2mm level show up clearly. You could be putting hundreds of clearly visible rivets on your models, for example. No point making FUD available if you're not going to use its potential, IMO.

Conversely if you're just going for WSF level of detail then ignore the above. :)

+1 Having designed and printed probably literally hundreds of CAD model designs by now (mostly at 6mm) Evil & Chaos knows what he's talking about.

It's good that you're putting them out your Epic models for those that want them GDB but the level of detail of is a joke compared to what we've got used to and there is definitely a market for alt. Epic figures at *higher* quality than GW or FW were putting out. I have bought a PH Strike Cruiser and some torpedos from you, but I wouldn't currently buy any of your epic models due to the level of detail.

Totally understood, and you're right, when I said it pushed the limits of the printer, I was referring to White, Strong, and Flexible. For the 6mm scale models, I make FUD available since it's requested often enough, but personally I consider it too expensive. As a result, I design for WSF; I aim to keep close to or even below what people were paying for, say, injection molded plastic infantry sprues of similar model count, or a set of metal vehicles.

This also allows me to put out a design in a reasonable amount of time, since this is really only a side project in support of my actual hobby - playing GW games! So yes the detail is much lower, and I certainly appreciate the guys putting in the effort to make really high quality models.

Hopefully I'm just filling a different niche, even if it's temporary, so others (and myself) will still be able to play Epic.

Thanks for the feedback and support!
