GW also purchased the literary rights according to the staff, but I have my doubts that is accurate.

That is actually correct, the original licence was only for material from the films, they got an additional licence to utilise material from the books.

The first supplement has already been published, The Shadow and the Flame

Shadow & Flame is the very first in a series of gaming supplements for our strategy battle game based on The Lord of The Rings.

With these supplements we will go beyond what is presented in the films of The Lord of The Rings and delve into the rich material of J.R.R. Tolkien's books (in particular, The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit). This will allow us to expand our game, providing the players with new forces to add to their collections and many scenarios in which to use these new models.

In fact, if you check out the articles on LoTR in the last (UK) White Dwarf (February) you will also see details which are based on the book rather than the film - at one point it is mentioned that Denethor lit the beacons to call the Rohirrim for help - as in the book - whilst in the film, he opposes this.

Hi all,

Firstly, played three "test" games of EA today and enjoyed them all. Then went on to play a 1500 point game which was fantastic! Really looking forward to having an excuse to buy yet more tanks! (over 20 40k leman russ'es inc variants so far......).

Nice site Gandalf, interesting that you can still get the MOW stuff in the US, might see if i can buy some from them online and just stump up the post. If not........ maybe we could arrange a trade? im not sure how expensive GW stuff is out there but as i visit the nottingham HQ for the tournaments etc fairly regularly i dont mind picking up mail order stuff or FW stuff while im there........

As for LOTR, all the rumours i had heard (although this was pri-return of the king and before christmas) was that LOTR was bombing at an unacceptable pace and GW wasnt earning much out of it as a license. Who knows? LOTR is a pretty poor game in my opinion anyway.

Already im starting to think of ways to tei EA into BFG, even tho i dont play BFG, i might be tempted into a fleet because of EA.......

Warmaster? fantastic game! really enjoy that! Tie it in with MOW? OH YES! im there!

Hi!

Ah, warmaster! The game I love to mull over. I have been "thinking" of getting into it since it was released. Doubt it will ever happen since its only through mail order.

For someone who has NEVER paid GW minis at non-discount retail prices...well...I guess I'll never play it... :{

Thanks for the compliments Dave! I am fascinated with Man O' War, even after 10 years since it's release. All the other games GW has released have all gone through changes, like 40k, Warhammer, and Epic, and while GW feels Man O' War isn't worth revising, Man O' War has been perfect all this time. I just started a custom Pirate fleet and I am by far more excited playing that than enything else right now. Unfortunately, no one I know or play with has the minis I do, so normally we can only play with what I have.

I think the only thing that kills the game is the fact that it is a Naval combat game, and that might turn people off as it did to me, since I am normally NOT big on boats or that sort of thing. I like tanks and planes. ?:p ?Therefore I feel I can relate to games like Epic or 40k more than I can with galleys. Of course, once I played it I fell in love with it.

BTW Dave, GW isn't selling their Man O' War minis in Archive anymore. That is why Man O' War is one of the hottest things on Ebay right now. It is sick what some people are paying now.

Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised to her that LOTR is starting to nose-dive. It seems when a GW game goes out of style it goes out quick. That is probably the main reason they are always coming out with new editions every business cycle. They need to for their survival.

I bought the Fellowship main box set the day after I saw the movie along with the Fellowship mini set. I thought the minis where some of the best I've ever seen. I bought some Uriki along with Lurtz, a Cave Troll, Saurman, and Elrond and was all set to paint them up and. . . . did nothing with them. I have only played a few skirmish games too. I don't think the system itself is good for mass combat.

Anyway, I picked up The Two Towers box set and pretty much sold it on Ebay a week later. I wasn't crazy about the box set itself. I haven't picked up the ROTK, or any of the new minis either although I think they all look great, but truthfully the excitement is over to me with the release of the game, and while I am sure the box sets helped sales being found in Barnes and Nobles and such, I don't think the mainstream people buying these games are picking up much metal, just the gamers.

So while I love what GW has done, I think LOTR is only going to get them so much. It isn't like the 40k or Warhammer universe where they can create new events just for the sake of marketing it. Reading battle reports on scenerios from the movie or books does nothing for me either.

They did a great job, but I doubt LOTR will be shown much interest by the end of the year.

I have been tempted on picking up the Warmaster rulebook and maybe the Empire and Orc starter sets. I don't think I would expand on them much, and I don't think I would look to play it outside a friend or two. I just think that if I don't get it now maybe in 10 years I will regret it. ?:D ?Then I will spend too much buying it.

BTW, everywhere I see Warmaster stuff it is on the sale rack.

Over Christmas at our local store LOTR and terrain was selling like hot cakes - definately out sold 40k. It was a massive success, the secret is a good rules set (I actually like it) and very affordable armies.

24 miniatures for ?12 and that is all you need - it is a skirmish game. They also don't do there normal pound for point thang with LOTR, you get 24 armoured men of gondor for ?12 - bargain!

Oh and Primarch - Warmaster rocks!

I ordered the LotR Terrain Set to use for Epic terrain.   Large ruined wall sections and huge statues, it should all fit in with little modification ...   :;):

>> Neal, is LOTR's selling that much!? Impressive.

I was shocked as well.  Every time I went in there, there was a big pile on the tables, so I assumed they were showcasing it to drive sales.  Apparently, it was as much because they were in need of storage space as the display.  To be fair, the guys said the Nashville store was #3 in the country for box sets sold.

Jimbo:  Thanks for the confirmation on the literary rights.  I agree that should drive stuff for a while.  I did notice there was a Barrow Wights set out for it, but didn't make the connection.

I agree that price is a driving factor.  In fact, it's really tempting to get a bunch of Rohan figs and build a Kislevite force for about half of what it would cost with WHFB figs.  The boxed sets are also good deals, as they minis included are as about $40 if purchased separately (at their good price), plus the rules.  It certainly seems that GW is continuing down their loss-leader-rules/sell-the-toys path.

Hi!

Neal, has GW put up a GW store in Nahsville? I'd be suprised if they haven't with such a good seller nearby.

Gandalf, want to share those sources of cheap warmaster?

Primarch:  There's been a GW store in Nashville for about 2 years now.  It's the Opry Mills location (on the former Opryland site) in one of the new wave of high-end tourist-driven malls.

GW is generally strong in middle tennessee.  At the peak of game shops, there were 3 indy just-game shops in Nashville/Murfreesboro (the next county, about 20 minutes away), and various hobby and comic shops that also carried gaming stock.  In fact, I went to college in a town of about 20,000 at a university of about 7,000 and there was 1 full game shop, and 2 comic shops that carried gaming materials.

We had a recent spate of closings, but I'm sure new stores will pop up.  It wasn't due to innate business problems.  One was in a bad location and struggled for several years.  The other was owned by Henry Higginbotham, the artist that did the D&D 3.0 and 3.5 book covers.  He has a second baby due any day now and was getting as many commission offers as he could do.  He tried to sell the store, but 3 deals fell through, the last after he told his landlord he was leaving so he discounted everything and shut it down anyway.

Speaking of which, Primarch, if you don't mind, drop me a note at neal.e.hunt@teamstatestreet.com.  I'd like to discuss running a store with you and would prefer e-mail to pm's.

Well yes ... but the walls will be very big wall ruins and the statues will be just big monoliths.   Look at the Statue of Liberty, the Statue outside Volgagrad (Stalingrad), etc.  They will be structures of "Epic" proportions !  :l    They are not are big as the 40K (not E40K) ruins ...  :;):
