No ground flak is very risky for guard, I'd bin a tbolt formatiin and stick a hydra in each of your companies, stormtroopers without valks aren't that great tbh, points are best spent elsewhere, a second shadowsword would be my first choice

While I love bombards, you're better off taking bailisks or manticores, range is key with artillery, take a second.battery of bombards sure, but don't have them as your only arty if you can help it....

Tactics wise I'd stick your foot inf garrisoning your blitz, in deep cover on overwatch, your tanks should try to engage as much as possible, hug cover with them to avoid TK weapons and keep them moving, your stormtroopers and reg hq should make a great rolling assault formation, keep fire lanes open with the shadowswords and use them to snipe RA targets, screen your arty and deathstrikes with the sentinels. Try to avoid getting 'boxed in' and drive towards the other half....

Baneblades are ok as a company choice, not worth it as singles, shadowswords are a million times better

Yes to the hydras question, reg hq, inf and tanks

Griffons are good and cheap, also handy to stick in tank companys to soak up TK/MW hits....

Would it be worth dropping the artillery battery and purchasing 2 griffon upgrades, 1 for the leman russes and 1 for the hq unit, and then with the 150pts left give the second stormtrooper unit valks?

coupled with dropping a thunder bolt unit and giving the russe's, hq and inf company a hydra each that leaves me with only 9 activation's, will this be enough or is it a bit light for guard?

Thanks
Alex

I think you really need artillery as a guard player, being able to hit anything on the table is a very useful thing to be able to do..... especially against armies like eldar and marines who like to hide and wait, having the threat of a barrage or two to drop on their heads forces them to move around a bit, I'd drop the unmounted stormtroopers, buy some griffons if you want, but I'd buy a hydra battery to guard your artillery/deathstrikes from planes (almost guaranteed they will be a very early target and you're normally going second as the guard player....)

something along these lines:

REGIMENTAL HQ [600]
Supreme Commander, 12 Infantry, 7 Chimera, Hydra, Griffon Battery (3 Griffons)

INFANTRY COMPANY [300]
Commander, 12 Infantry, Hydra

TANK COMPANY [700]
10 Leman Russ, Hydra

STORM TROOPER PLATOON [350]
8 Storm Troopers, Valkyrie Transport

ARTILLERY BATTERY [250]
3 Basilisks

SENTINEL SQUADRON [100]
4 Sentinels

SUPER-HEAVY TANK PLATOON [200]
Shadowsword

DEATHSTRIKE MISSILE BATTERY [200]
2 Deathstrike Missile Launchers

FLAK BATTERY [150]
3 Hydra

THUNDERBOLT FIGHTERS [150]
2 Thunderbolts

screen the deathstrikes and artillery with sentinels, keep both close to the hydra battery, keep the tanks with open fields of fire and in support range of the two mechanised formations (reg HQ and stormtroopers), it's tempting to keep the stormtroopers mounted to give them a huge engage range, just be wary of any potential threats (aircraft, artillery, sneak attacks) I'd always put the stormtrooper commissar in a valk so when they all die, you'll have a super quick fearless skimmer to zip around, use the shadowsword to take out RA targets when possible, and also to try to threaten war engines, a 1-2 with the tbolts to strip shields followed by a retain and sustain is a great way to hurt/kill warhounds and the like, oh and almost always go all out with the valks rocket pods when you get the chance, 8BP disrupt is a great way to put a dent in almost any formation

the only problem is speed, you're not going to win any sprinting contests, so make sure you try to protect your Reg HQ and stormtroopers as they're your only real hope of nabbing the blitz.... sure you don't want to include some warhounds? ;)

Hi

Thanks for the extensive reply :P

it gives me allot to think about ;)

how would you squeeze in some war hounds? or warhound?

drop the hydra on the inf company, the griffons and the deathstrikes?

i could keep the hydra unit near the inf company on the blitz and the artillery.

that will give me enough for a warhound and 25pts spare

thanks
Alex

it really depends on your playstyle, Richard 'king of the guard' Laking uses the following:

Tank co w/hydra
Reg Hq w/hydra
Mech inf w/hydra
Manticores
Sentinels
Sentinels
Hydras
Warhound
Warhound
Tbolts

he tends to move forward en-masse (according to his clubmates, I've never faced him yet) stick the tank company in the opponent's face and force them to deal with it and not ignore it, meanwhile he uses the warhounds and mechanised infantry companies together, mech inf move up to within 15cm of the enemy and prep, then the warhound retains and engages the enemy unit in a firefight, the mech inf then get 21 supporting fire shots which is enough to hurt almost anything very badly, I've tried the list many times and never won with it yet, Richard has beaten pretty much everyone with it and has about an 85% win ratio, so it's all down to tactics with a bit of luck :)

I pretty much always take two mechanised infantry formations and 2 warhounds in my armies, they're great and they synergise so perfectly

yeah well worth it, fast, shooty, reliable, reasonably resilient, fearless..... all for a mere 275 points, bargain!

It depends, they are a threat to some armies more than others, I managed to miss a super stompa with both of them once.....they work well with vultures to strip shields, however most players using a warlord or gargant will ensure they neutralise the deathstrikes as early as possible, they're fun and powerful although on balance spending the points on a shadowsword is probably a better all-purpose choice....

or a warhound titan?? :P

i think i may drop the deathstrikes in favour, you may have won me over to the idea of a warhound

i will drop the deathstrikes, griffons and hydra on inf company and get a warhound and sniper unit for the inf company.

would this be the best way of doing it?

thanks
Alex

From my point of view I'd keep the Deathstrikes. Any opponent with a high value WE will be forced to target the DStrikes early on sparing the rest of your army.

Deathstrikes are a cheap lucky wheel. 200 point is not that hurting, even at 3000 points. This is the case, where you fail
-activating them AND the enemy is not in line of sight.
-to hit with the missiles.
-roll 1 for both Titan-Killer D6 dmg.

In any other case, you really hurt enemy War Engine units, or simple Armored Vehicles with Reinforced Armor. (Also have a minor chance of potentially wiping out War Engines.)

So the losing factor is a cheap 200 points, while the other side of the coin is really benefical.

PS.: I say this after my recent battle against Codex Marines, where successfully activating, and hitting both single formation Warhounds, with a D-missile each, and then rolling 1 for dmg... stripping down 1 point of Void Shield, and placing a Blast Marker token for shooting a formation... :P
