For poops and giggles I added up the costs of buying a 2000 point Epic A Space Marine force from scratch, meaning acting as if I didn't already own thousands of Epic minis.

Here is my army list and and an estiamte of what it would cost in USD. . . based on www.xe.com. I know US prices will be a little lower.

Reaver Titan                      $30
Land Raiders                      $36
Tactical + Commander         $36
Rhinos                              $18
Devastator + Commander (Hopefully already included in above)
Rhinos (included above)
Predators                          $16

Considering how GW prices things by code, I think this would be closer to:

Reaver Titan                      $25 (Same as 40k Terminator squad)
Land Raiders                      $35 (Same as the 40k SM  Dreadnought)
Tactical + Commander         $35 (Same as above)
Rhinos                              $15 (Same as 40k SM Scouts)
Devastator + Commander (Hopefully already included in above)
Rhinos (included above)
Predators                          $15 (Maybe more)

Compare what something costs in  ? and compare it to USD on the websites, and you'll see what I mean. So above, I can expect to pay 125 for what amounts to 5 formations. Jesus Christ. I am glad I have all my plastics. . .

I didn't even include the rulebook. That should be another $30.

Hi!

Why do you assume the prices in the US will be lower. They usualy tend to be HIGHER than what the normal exchange rates allow.

In any event your basic premise is true. WAY too expensive.

Then again, I've said that before...haven't I..... :;):

Even I, the eternal Epic optimist, have to admit that the numbers are not pretty... even the prices of plastics are pretty OTT.

Hi!

I think bartertown and e-bay are going to see sellers making a killing on epic plastics. ANY plastics.

Glad I got mine....  :;):

Hi!

I know what you mean. I once bought 20 blisters of leman russ tanks on sale through GW for 3 dollars a pop and felt kinda bad about it.

Now, I chide myself for not buying double that amount.... :D

primarch, it should be cheaper. GW's prices are pretty universal. If you just compare the prices of their products in the UK and the US, it is easy to see the price block the minis will fall under. GW prices by block codes (for lack of a better word), not by individual prices. They assign a pack to an existing price block, not the other way around.

Anyway, I remember my jaw hitting the floor when Epic 40k came out and a Space Marine Battlegroup was 9.99 lol. Well, I have to admit it is an excellent sprue, but 3.50 is a much better deal. Anyway, the EpicA sprues suck when it comes to variety, so I can't justifiably pay more for less, if you know what I mean. I feel really sorry for new players. Hell, back in the day six warlords was $30. I could make a massive army for around $40. That is why I laugh when Jervis wants to make ATII. How many titans per side? five? great, that will be $150 and u get five moves per turn. No way.

Everytime I brought up the cost of playing EpicA in the playtesting vault I was told to wait till the prices came out, which is bull-poop. The costs of playing should be considered in the rules of the game, and what you can do with you armies. That is why I keep saying the more you can do with your formations the better. If I pay an extra $40 to bring my 2000 point army to a 3000 one, I get a few more choices, but in the long run it will get boring.

Imagine playing the IG with one support choice!!!!! And I was settling for that. I would have loved to see them get three. Can you imagin buying a company each time you bought a cool support blister?

Maybe it is my delivery, cause I feel I have been dead on with EpicA from day one. No game should be too expensive to play, and I really feel Epic A is. For newbies that is.

Yes, I read such responses. It was wishing thinking and of course wanting you to "shut up". I stated clearly months if not over a year ago that prices WOULD BE HIGH. Dismissive statements like "oh you dont know what the prices will be" or "wait until its released" are usually done to attempt to sidestep OBVIOUS problems.

I agree that cost is an intimate part of marketing any game. It may be a good game, but price it too high and sales will suffer.

Mind you if this had the success or support of say 40k or fantasy, then the high price would not be a hinderance.

But in the case of a fanatic game with a previous abysmal failure and many armies "yet to see the light of day for years", then a high price tag may be an insurmountable hurdle.

Am I the only one who thinks the pricing is pretty fair? It's expensive granted and more expensive than previous editions but times and capitalist economies move on and the pricing is in line with the pricing for the rest of GW's non-Specialist Games. If you don't want to pay those prices because you already have tons of epic and you know what sort of prices you paid ten years ago then fair enough, but new people are starting up on Epic Armageddon all the time and they are paying the new pricing...

Hi!

GlynG, fair statement. IF you're a newbie, then previous price comparisons and such are without much importance, more so if you hail from games like 40k and fantasy you may think its even "cheap". Its a matter of perspective.

The trick is will "total newbies" not accustomed to "GW prices" will think its fair. Much harder to predict, but I'm inclined to say no.

As for "many starting epic A all the time", that also remains to be seen. One must not extrapolate a very local realities with worldwide ones.

If Epic A still has steam by the time the game is released in the US, then we can be more optimistic.

Fanatic games are cheap as far as hobbies go. I've probably spent more on computer games than I have on GW stuff (not to mention music: how did I get 50 cds?)
