oh yeah, I'm planning on it :D just wondered if anyone ever uses TWO warp spider formations as I have just enough models to make two lots..... wonder whether that would be super evil or super pants...... of course if you speak to some people, warp spiders are a bunch of rubbish, so I'm sure those people wouldn't be unhappy to see two lots of rubbish deploy at the beginning of a game....

I might swap out one of the spider formations for banshees, just to get the holy trinity of 'sub-optimal' choices in there (war walkers, cobras and banshees) ;D

One of the great things about Eldar is that they are probably the most flexible race going; you can try out virtually any strategy based on different formation combinations - I am well known for doing so :) The only guide here is to maximise on the stuff that supports the strategy.

And I agree with Rug, 'sub-optimal' can be fun too, though IMO there are very few 'sub-optimal' Eldar, just formations that are easier or harder to use well.

Go for it. I have found that, compared to 40K, all the talk of under performing units in the Eldar army is blown out of proportion by some anyway. In relative terms, even the perceived weaker Eldar units are not really that weak, so try them out, and please fill us in regarding any good tactics you come up with.

Indeed there are very few "weak" units, it is all a matter of tinkering at this point. I.e. X is not quite as good as Y, rather than X is awful. Not that this means nothing is worth changing of course, but I do have to wonder if playtesting could ever identify the point at which everything is perfectly balanced. We like to hold it up as a rigorous method, but Epic has an astronomical level of variation inherent in the game, so it is rather unscientific to try to use it in a quantitative way - you'd need billions of playtests. Rather it gives a more qualitative "feel". The aspects are a case where the sensitivity of this is really not up to it - the difference in balance is too small, rather dwarfed by the effect of confounding variables such as players' individual perceptions.

Once you are comfortable about this (and the inevitable back and forth in stats as trends for particular units change), you just have to try to figure out what's persistently out of whack and what's not.

Anyway, back on topic: I don't think it's worth painting up 2 formations of spiders. And probably not even a full formation of most of them - I've never felt the urge to use 8 striking scorpions, for instance. I suppose in a massive game, but it's way too easy to fall into the "well I might need them one day" trap. It took me a number of years to realise I was never going to use all those night wings... A bunch of cobras are still sitting in a box hoping for action though. :)

Also, how did you talk yourself into the belief you need to build not one but three Eldar armies? :)

I'm not quite sure..... I really liked the way the Iyanden list played last time I faced them, plus the bright yellow scheme.....then Tiny-tim's ulthwe made me think that maybe THAT was the way forwards.... then I remembered I liked the void spinner and large aspect formations a lot too, and I'd already planned out my Biel-Tan force..... I couldn't decide between them so decided to do all three..... because I'm that kind of idiot.....

Well you have enough painting one colour all the time and if you want to do a variant army it looks nice to have them the correct colour, unlike blue Blood Angels or anything like that (Dave ;) )

I guess the other thing I'm missing (actually rather a huge one I suspect!) is - I just ain't that into painting! My loss, I know.

We're heading off topic here I know, but you aren't the only one Kyrt. The only reason I paint my models is that they need the three basic colours to be tournament legal otherwise I'd still be playing with my one colour marines from SM days (Red are Blood Angels, Dark Green are Dark Angels, Black are Sons of Horus & Dark Blue are Night Lords ;) )
And I also like my extra Championship points for taking variant and new armies.
The closest I come to using the same models is with my Ork and Speed Freak lists where Boyz, Bikes, Buggyz and Skorchas get swopped between lists. However I doo have enough to run two separate armies if ever need ;D
