We headed down to the Monthly League of Ancients meet, where Ben had done a top job to organise the Epic Minegeddon Melbourne.
When I first sat down to build a list I first looked at all my 3000 point lists they tend to be 7-8 Activation's, I find this is pretty good. So I was working on 4 activations for 1000points needed for Minegeddon. The Minegeddon rules have some limitations which I think are very good, they also modify the points cost and the amount of some formations so you can still use most of your models in the game. I didn't get any painting done last week so I went with my Minervan Guard list. Which meant I was stuck with only 3 activations.
List Below:
Leman Russ Tank Company (400 points BTS) 4 x Leman Russ + 2 Leman Russ Executioners
Super Heavy Tank Company (400 points BTS) Baneblade, shadowsword + 1 Hydra Flak
Superheavy Tank (200 points) Storm Blade
Main reasons for this list is the Macro Weapons, it is one of the oldest fan based lists and it by far one of the most balanced, after all most of the Rare Leman Russ either cost more, or have less weapons. Also it is a fun list to play against and with, which being my last Epic event in Aus for the next 2 years is important.
So tables were set, terrain placed and we were off.
Game 1: Minervan Tanks v Knights of House Giacomo Not really a favorable match up for me, oh well once more in the breach..
4 x Paladins + Senechal (BTS) 3 x Errants 3 x Lancers
everything moves faster than me, and has stuff to stop my Titan Killer weapons. And sure enough the shadow sword's Volcano Cannon, was next to useless. Things started badly, as I couldn't hit with any of the Russ, main guns, or the Baneblade, and the shadow swords cannon got bounced off the knight shield. but the Storm blade did it's Job, thank god for a 2+ to hit with it, cause nothing else hit. The 2nd turn was quite bad for me as the Leman Russ Broke and were destroyed in CC with the Lancers, but in return I destroyed the paladins, meaning we both got BTS. The 3rd turn I doubled the storm hammer up and broke with the help of the baneblade the Lancers, meaning the Errants left, we were both over half, 1-1.... it goes to a 4th turn. The Errants moved behind half and I moved to get an object, but couldn't. so it ends we both got None shall Pass 2-2 count back. I killed 650 points to 400 points lost, tie breaker win. Got out of Jail free there, If we had of rolled the same at the end of the 4th turn and got a 5th I may have been able to push for a decisive win, but the Lancer had rallied and it was not looking good, I had taken damage on the Storm Blade so would have been close. Was a good game.
Lunch was had, it was me v Half a Pig, the half a pig won, was well worth the battle.
Game 2: Shas'O Fattdex v my Gaurd.
Fattdex did tell me what was in the list even gave me an army list, but it is out side in the car, and it is cold out there. So maybe he can post his list below.
Fattdex could have deployed better, using his scouts and stuff that could garrison, but didn't. could have been marker lighted, and smacked around from turn 1. Instead he chose to hide, then move out from cover, which would have been good, except, I got initiative and went on over watch, with both the russ and superheavy company. meaning that if it moved it got hammered, and the Hammer heads got hammered, killing the unit. The scouts also took a beating breaking, in turn 3 I had beaten back the BTS but not killed it, but captured the objectives, and so I had won. The advice for better deployment proved to be useful as Fattdex went on to win.
Game 3: Commissar von Lucky, with Mech Gaurd. Mechanised Infantry Company (BTS) Warhound Titan Shadow Sword Sentinel Squadron.
This was von Luckys first set of Epic games in 5 or 6 years, so he was slowly remembering the rules. This was also one of the most balanced lists i have seen. For von Lucky's first outing for a long time, he really should have garissioned his Sentinels and Mech Gaurd, stopping me from moving freely with his scouts. So the game started out pretty well, I managed to break his shadow sword with blast markers and 1 DC down, and the inf in a buildings were slowly being hurt by the demolisher Cannon on the baneblade, and the russ tanks. How ever the the shadow sword did manage to recover then went hunting a Storm Blade and got him, with a single round doing 3 damage and killing him out right. There were loads of failed activations on both sides, this possibly saved me a little as well, as the warhound didn't get to play with me.. that could have been a game turner. Instead I got the BTS and I also got one of his objectives, giving me the win. It should be said I though von Luckys army was very nice, it uses loads of non GW miniatures, all done in a winter theme.
Game 4: Traitor Legion TO. Yep got the TO in the last game as we had only 5 players cause we had a pull out, from a Sat night injury (read as liver injury). Traitor Legion Black Legion Retinue Decimator Armoured Company Raptors
now on paper I should have it all over this list. Things didn't go well. I broke the Raptors early, but the Decimator wouldn't die. I got the Chaos Marines, but I lost my BTS in the process, and I didn't cross half, and the TO did. things in that game went pretty pear shaped, I put my self in a position where I should have won a shooting contest and lost it. In all the TO created good cross fire positions after I failed to kill things I should have, and beat the snot out the leman russ like no tomorrow.. It was a good game to end on, and I went down 2-1.
Over all I came 2nd.
The minegeddon rules them selves were alot of fun, and I would highly recommend them to anybody or any group getting into Epic. this reminded me why Epic is fun. I do have reservations on some of the lists out there, I will get on to this in a minute. It would be great to see more of these style events around, I think they are good way to get many games in, and get people into Epic. The TO did a fantastic Job and players were all happy to get out there and play each other, I hope that Ben does this again, and I hope to see more of the locals come out and play. I have two years off form events in Aus, but I will have to see what is in the States when I get there.
The Lists where to start. If I had more time I would have finished some of stuff in my unpainted pile, and get 4 activations, if you can get 4 activations you are in a sweet spot at 1000 points, Fattdex did this as did Ben with the Chaos, and I was left reacting to what they were doing, in 3000 points I find 7 or 8 is the sweet spot, that way you get max fire power, and if somebody has 10+ activations, there is no way they can ever weather the storm 7 really big formations of fire power can put out. At 10 activions I find the formations are small and brittle, essentially that what you have to contend with at 1000 points. But this does play in to the hands of Marines, as you are not making the formations smaller at 1000 points like you are with Guard Tanks. I would have looked at every list a number of times, from the NetEA Army list Compendium 2012, but I kept finding that some of the fan based lists have different stat lines in for the same unit's, this needs to be cleared up so people start to get some good armies on the table. and I don't think there needs to be so many variants, for each main force. In saying that if I were to build a list for this again I would look at two lists
Codex Marines: Land Raiders Bikes Vindicators Land Speeders
Or Imp Guard Steel legion: Inf Company Storm Troopers + Valkyries Sentinals Warhound
I think that Bens Chaos legions was a good solid list as well.
So again many thanks to Ben for getting it all setup and ran, well done to Fattdex on the win.
cheers
