Curious about the current IG company box from GW and what it contains. Specifically as I understand it the current edition is basically reprints of a subset of 3rd edition models. Is this item what the basic grunt looks like now?


Normally I've just been using 3rd party (EW mainly) figures but started to come into possession from bulk trades of various IG figs and thinking about running with them. I'm not above buying the current box if it's the same as what I have currently in my bits box.

In addition I take it old items like the loader and missile team are OOP as I understand it, yes?

Not sure either way ... but you should be able to get them on e-Bay ... And don't forget, not only Exodus Wars makes great Grunts but so does DRM, CinC and MicroWorld ...

Totally agreed! In fact the whole reason I am bringing this up is that through trades and bulk buys I happen to of ended up with various mixed and matched batches of IG that I feel like doing something with. I just lack enough to build out a cohesive force with (other than the 2nd edition IG grunts which I have coming out of the ears). Normally I've been using the EW Centurions as they're awesome IMO and I do have to agree that some of the forumware (e.g. the FW Canadians spring to mind) are beyond belief (but I've already sold my pocketbook to a blue werewolf! )

Maybe I should just pony these guys up in trade instead of trying to finish them off?

I figure that knowing more is going to make and internet purchases easier to accomplish in the long run.

The box contains the first model, some commissars, ogres and ratlings. No heavy weapons or loaders as far I have seen. In fact, I didn't know those ML models existed untill now

Personally, I think the current model looks a little silly. I don't like static pieces (like that sandbag wall) on stands, which may move several times in a game. I much prefer the 3rd edition loader and missile team or the old 2nd edition shoulder-mounted heavy weapon. But that's just personal taste.

Yes, I thought those emplacements were silly and it is much better to have them on the sprue individually !!!

As I recall, that is one of the half-sprues that was in the E40K infantry box. The other half of that sprue had the Catachan jungle fighters, the missile teams, the loaders, the radiomen, and the autocannon gunners.

I wonder why they dumped it? Seems like it would be a more popular seller than a box of just fire support teams.

If anything, the specialist sprue would be the one I'd want to purchase from their website. I have tons of 2nd edition IG that I can use for standard troopers.

I always get bad mental incongruity when Fire Support teams hop out of their Chimaeras with ready-made emplacements. Thank goodness for EW - at least I don't have to pay through the teeth for my Fire Support teams anymore.

Actually the half of the sprue they produce now used to have Catachans on it - they re-cut the sprue to replace them with more steel legion guys when they cut the sprue in half at the start of fourth edition (you can see the join marks at the side of the sprue if you look carefully).

Most of the specialists removed weren't steel legion in style (missile teams wore Russian hats, rough riders were attilans, etc.) so that's probably why they got replaced - so that the new models could look like they were from the correct planet.

I always thought the current 'steel legion' models were originally intended to be valhallans...... they don't bear much resemblance to the steel legion 40k models
