Stand to stand or model to model?

Given range measurement is model to model (or weapon to model) we've always played it the same for coherency in our group as it seemed more agnostic towards base size/shape.

At Adepticon people played it stand to stand so I was curious.

Edge of base to edge of base ... Regardless of base size generally. It is certainly more realistic ... Infantry generally disperses to avoid all being KIA/WIA by one HE round ... or in this case one blast/burst template ...

I do all my measurements from base to base. It saves a lot of problems and keeps things consistent and also allows for modelling without disadvantaging yourself in-game.

Can you expand on that? Problems/consultancies?

Given the multiple base sizes and shapes out there, I would think figure-to-figure measurement would serve this purpose better.

Well, I like to a get a bit creative with my model placement, treating them a bit like a mini-diorama (As much as 6mm models allow). Some models are clustered together in the centre of the base, back to back, others may be strung out in a loose skirmish line on patrol for e.g. Using the edge of the base allows for consistent measurements and modelling freedom and is generally pretty standard in most wargames (so it's not harder to draw LOS, coherency, engagement range, templates with some of my stands of models than others). It also accounts for the abstract nature of the game. My stands take up the area of the base but at this particular freeze frame in time are in these positions within that area - as they interact with the enemy and move around the battlefield they won't stay in those positions.

An example being:

Models are not evenly spaced on all bases, so the easiest and fairest thing to do is to use the base itself for measuring. Sometimes this means they can extend their engagement range a tiny bit but it also means that they are harder to hide and can be brought into the opponent's range a tiny bit. The important thing is that it's consistent.

As long as both players are aware of what convention they're using before the game, it doesn't really matter what method they use during the game itself, IMO.

Mind you the differences in play are in general going to be so small as to be unnoticable in 99% of games.

I know a guy who sells models that don't look like 25 year old poohs. Really helps those dioramas. ;-)

We measure from base edge to base edge for determining range and for coherency.
We have ALL kinds of base sizes in the local armies (round, square, oval, rectangular, triangular etc). We've never had a problem with this and I don't really see a need to change things now.

We measure base-to-base.

I have a hard time thinking that 2-3mm difference in coherency would make any difference, though, except in some really unusual circumstances. Normally, by the time those kinds of measurements matter, the formations are so beat up that you're not likely to "stretch" the total frontage by very much.

I was also measuring base-to-base for Infantry and small models (bikes) that are usually mounted on a base. Vehicles I always measured from the actual model. I kind of thought this was the standard... :-\

Base to base except for the larger, unmounted vehicles, which is the standard in the UK AFAIK.

Additionally where there may be some doubt due to the small measurements involved, I tend to announce to my opponent when formations are intentionally intermingled, inside / outside charge range etc.
