Had an awesome day, three great games against three great opponents, my only issue was with the time slots, it seemed that games 1 and 3 were rushed and game 2 was very long, also there is no need for 1.5 hours for lunch......

Game 1 - mark preston and his steel legion.

Mark bought a warlord list with a tank company, two infantry companies, two hydra batteries, two lots of sentinels and a flight of tbolts.
From the get-go this was a bloodbath, with us taking it in turns to damage formations, mark's increased firepower started to move things in his favour and I just couldn't strip any shields off his warlord until turn 3, I hit with both deathstrikes but only managed 4 points of damage including a single critical..... At the end of the turn I rolled to see if the titan exploded and gave me BTS but alas it didn't and mark won 2-0 with BTS and T&H

Game 2 - Si Jenkins and bis black templars

I apologise to Si for continually asking him to repeat himself, the guys playing behind him seemed to be having a bellow like brian blessed contest and it was tricky to hear at times.
Si started with the orbital barrage which took out my deathstrikes and put blast markers on a bunch of my units, followed by teleporting terminators and some drop-podding devastators who made themselves very comfortable on my blitz....
The game started with his terminators blowing up two of my valkyries and 2 stands of stormtroopers, and his devs taking out my bombards contesting the blitz, then disaster struck when his landing craft full of tanks was shot down by a lucky critical from one of my hydras, taking out a significant portion of his activations, I also fired at his terminators with most of my stuff, only thinking to ask which formation was his BTS when a single broken stand of termies was left, he just smiled and pointed at said terminators, so I ran my second warhound over and took them out. 1-1
I managed to break both his speeder formations as well as his bikes. He landed his thunderhawks on the blitz and between my T&H objectives to claim them, but I was able to use my warhound to blow the T&H thunderhawk up and swooped my stormtroopers in to claim the other objective, my mechanised formation ran over and contested my blitz, giving me a 2-1 victory on turn 3

thanks to Si for a great game and being a great sport throughout!

Game 3 - Darren 'Reedar' Reeks and his orks

Darren has a great army and talked me through everything as I'm not hugely familiar with orks, after seeing me salivating after spotting his super stompa and mentally painting a bullseye on it for the deathstrikes, his first activation was to swoop both lots of fighters and shoot at them, he took a lot of flak, losing a plane from each formation, but managed to suppress one of the deathstrikes for his efforts. I tried to fire the deathstrike at his stompa, but failed to activate and broke the formation.... d'oh!

There was lots of back and forth shooting, and I decided to try and be aggressive by alpha striking with both warhounds and taking out a few of his gunwagons, trusting to orks being crappy shots to keep them alive

Darren then let rip with his soopaguns and flattened one of my garrisons, air assaulting with his landa and finishing the job, leaving a gaping hole in the middle of my half of the table, with all the remaining firepower I could muster I managed to break the 'red' warband

Turn two rolled around and my deathstrikes rallied! I immediately fired it at the super stompa and put a single blast marker on it before rolling a 1 to hit and wasting the shot entirely.... Darren had been suffering equally bad luck with his macro weapons so I suppose it wasn't meant to be.... yet more shooting and killing took place, including my second deathstrike missing on turn 3 I can't remember too many specifics, apart from getting my ass kicked by a second landa full of orks, as I was tired at this point and my synapses were starting to shut down as a result of lack of sleep and a nasty cold kicking in, hopefully Darren can fill in the details as it was an awesome game! unfortunately we didn't manage to finish in time and I think the draw does Darren a disservice, he certainly deserved to win, and probably would have done given more time

Also a final thanks to mark, mehiston and jon for lendng me the models to get my army on the table, you guys rule!!

Strange that nobody else has said much..... I was really ill with an upset stomach last night and I suspect the buffet lunch (as it was all I ate all day), was anyone else ill?

Hi guys,

Thanks for a great time - had three good games all against opponents I hadn't faced before; RichardL, AgeingHippy and Kyussinchains.

RichardL with his Steel Legion played extremely well and got himself a thoroughly deserved 3-0 win in the first round. Condensing the table and not making any mistakes I was never really in the running.

AgeingHippy and I contested the bottom table in game 2, some fortunate AA fire and unlucky assaults meant many of AH's THawks and loaded formations died. This left me able to pick apart the remainder of the marines without too much trouble. It is worth mentioning that in game one Richards dice were fantastic and mine were shocking.
In a great display of 'what goes around comes around' the situation reversed itself against AH. It's not often that Orks win the inititave against Marines three turns in a row! This is just one example of my luck in this game...

My final game was against kyussinchains and his Steel Legion. This was a great end to the day, a very entertaining game that ended up in a draw at the end.
Kyuss' has already covered most of the game earlier so I won't go into any details. We somehow managed to find ourselves starting turn 2 with only half an hour to play, and turn 3 with about 8 mins! I'd like to think one of us could have forced the win. As it was we were forced to call it a draw when time ran out with me only 1-0 up and everything else contested by both of us.

All in all good fun a looking forward to the next one....

Cheers
Reedar

No ill effects from lunch but given that the only thing I could get my hands on after finishing our first game late was a handful of cheese roll things and a chunk of cake then I'm not surprised :)

That was my only grumble really, lunch was a bit crap but I understand there's going to be issues with the logistics of feeding that many hungry wargamers in one small bar. My gripe was that those of us who'd finished our games late found nothing but a handful of little cheese rolls (that caught me out, thought they were sausage rolls, what a let down!) and tuna sandwiches (every buffet inevitably has tuna sarnies left over.. there's a reason, not many people like them) so lunch consisted of a piece of cake and two cheese roll things which I had to lean over complete random strangers to get to! I'd say 1/10 for the lunch, 10/10 for everything else :)

Three cracking games, I feel I'm definitely beginning to learn more even though there were moments in all three games were I realised I'd made a mistake as soon as I'd made a move / teleport / etc. and my initiative rolls were shocking across all three games, usually right when they mattered! (Chris will attest to this as my terminators got gobbled up before they could start on their ludicrous kamikaze teleport mission into the heart of the ork horde, and Jez will also attest to this when his terminators managed to trundle out of assault range of my, again, kamikaze teleport mission terminators... sigh!)

First game was Ryan's orks, cracking game and it looked to be very one sided in Ryan's favour from the word go, luckily I managed to drag it out and contested a bunch of objectives to deny Ryan an outright win in turn 3 when we ran out of time.

Second game was Chris Steel's orks, notice a running theme here? greenskins and lots of them, not helping me fight the urge to put together an ork horde! This one ended in a 2 - 0 victory to Chris and was another cracking game, I felt I stood more of a chance in this game but Chris put the hammer down and made me suffer for a few mistakes I made!

Third game versus Jez's marines, finally a marine army! I've never played against a codex marines army so it was a nice change to actually know what every unit I was facing was capable of, some mistakes and I might have played my hand a little early on but there was some definite improvements in my game, with only 5 minutes to play turn 4 and with Steve chasing results, we stood by the score at the end of turn 3, a 0 - 0 draw although if we'd played turn 4, I'd have been obliterated! This is the first time I've actually gotten to the end of turn 3 and had the scores at 0 - 0 though so despite the inevitable drubbing I'd have had if we'd continued, I'm chuffed with getting that far, just need to refine my game a bit and maybe that elusive win will come to me one day :)

Chuffed at my raffle win too, got one of the new GW hobby starter sets (the irony being that I'm so far from needing a starter set) but that was an unexpected treat and gives me a chance to try out the new GW paints without having to fork out any cash, got a set of replacement clippers too and I'm sure I'll find a use for the starter brush from the set. All good :)

Sadly I'm not going to be able to make a tournament until the end of the year at the earliest now as me and the wife are expecting our second child in the coming months and family stuff will be occupying the top slot of priorities once again, I'll definitely be back as soon as I can rack up enough brownie points and I have plenty of time to get a new army painted up, lastly I'm sure Dave B will keep my skills honed by completely drubbing me whenever the opportunity arises! :)

edit: sweet jesus, it's an essay... sorry about that :)

I've posted a full battle rep here: http://www.claphamwargamers.org.uk/Foru ... 9#pid17959

Great event as always and thoroughly enjoyed myself. A big thanks to Darren Mark and Dave for 3 great games, and apologies to Darren and Mark for being on the receiving end of some very jammy dicerolling ;)

Looking forward to the next event in May!
