I decided that my Epic marines needed some new bases and looking at some peoples armies, I liked the look of round bases. But rather than just sticking the models on a washer or 2p coin and then covering them with greenstuff/putty/etc to hide bases on the models feet, wanted them set in, like normal epic bases.
So after a bit of googling for thin round bases I settled on some from Litko. I got some 0.8mm thick 25mm diameter plywood discs for the top half and 0.025 inch thick 25mm diameter flexsteel for the bottom.
This is how things turned out:

This is what I got through the post, the wood discs on the left, the steel on the right. The steel discs also come with an adhesive side so they stick to the wooden base.

To make my holes in the wooden base I decided to use a standard hole punch. This one makes 6mm holes, which is perfect for Epic men.

Image

This is how the base looks after being punched. Even at only 0.8mm, I had to squeeze to punch the hole. I wasn't to worried about a bit of splintering of splitting as they would be painted over, but the punch made almost clean holes and obviously by doing them be eye he holes aren't perfectly aligned which is fine with me as it makes the formation of men look at little more natural.

With the steel base stuck underneath.

These show how the base size compares to the old square ones and I think they look pretty good. Similar in height and size.

Image

And this is how they look with a Devastator Squad based. Everything looks good so far. Currently they are just stuck on by the adhesive on the steel base, but I think I will glue them in properly to make them more secure.

Image

As well as the marines, I tried some Dreadnoughts. Obviously I couldn't punch these so I just drew around the dread base and cut out the right size from the wood base.

Everything together with a Rhino.

So all in all, I think the Litko bases work well. Like I said, I was a little worried about being able to punch them, but they seem to be able to handle it.

Just need to get on with the rest of my marines now.

Why didn't I think of that? Brilliant idea, and now stolen too.

Almost exactly the same result as I use, only difference is I use laser cut ply, with the holes laser cut rather than holepunched. I agree it looks great and it is now my prefered basing method, as it allows for very thin and light bases without the dreaded 'im on a hill' for every guy without having to putty around every model.

Looks awesome, do you mind me asking how much you reckon it works out per base?

I've always used GW strip bases but I think I'd me tempted away by these for future armies

I do the same thing or something similar for most of my bases. I used the 20x40mms bases and magnetic backing instead of the steel for my Litko bases though. With buying the 100 packs they worked out to $0.30USD a base. If you use Evergreen Scale Models 1/4" tile, cut the bases yourself (at 3/4"x1.5") and a 1x2' sticky magnetic sheeting you can get a craft store you can get it down to $0.11 a base.

For the holes, I'd recommend taping ~20 of the bases together and drilling them out with a 1/4" drill bit. It'll save your hand for painting and a lot of time. When drilling Litko bases make sure you don't push too hard and let the drill do most of work for you, spinning it high. Otherwise you'll mangle the wood.

Think I worked it out at about 33cent (22p) a base so not much more than the GW straight ones (if you are in the UK) and I don't like the straight ones any way.

If I had a drill press I could stack them and drill them, don't fancy my chances of doing it with a hand drill ;)

Thought about the magnetic ones, but didn't really think I would need them since this isn't warhammer and there aren't any movement trays.

I am sure I could have asked Jim at Litko to laser cut the holes, but I suspect that would have added more to the cost. This way I can punch the ones I need to for the infantry (I can even sit on the sofa of an evening and punch a few).

I did mine with a hand drill and masking tape to tape a stack together. All you need after that is a scrap of wood to drill on. I also think Hena had him laser cut the holes, I can't remember how much extra that was though.

Very smart idea,

They look much better than the square bases, also great so you dont have to green stuff the dreads anymore ;)
