I got another game with the new Iron Warriors list, this time against Duro's Raptor Marines.

The Iron Warrior army list:

Duro will add his army list.

The board.

The Raptors picked corner deployment and away we went.

The Marines deployment.

As the Marine army had 3 formations of teleporting terminators, The Iron Warriors castled up and protected the Ordinatus with a scout screen around the main force. It annoyed me to use my only Terminator formation as body guards for the Ordinatus (my Break Their Spririt) but I hoped it would deter Duro's teleporters from attacking it.

One detachment of terminators was teleported in.
Stategy roll went to the Rators.
The first thing Duro did was set about removing the scout screen. The Terminators engaged the Chosen Marines.
Image
The Chosen scout Marines actually won the engagment (due to lots of supporting fire) but were also broken due to casualties taken during the fight.

Duro realised that he'd deployed his Warlord titan and Predators too close together (the Ordinatus could hit both formations with one attack) so he retained and marched the tanks to the middle of the board (behind some mountains).

The Iron Warriors responded by sending out one of the Decimator super-heavy tanks and attacking the Predators, killing one of them.
Image
Retaining, I put my Hellblade fighters on CAP (ha, take that Thunderbolts).

The Raptors march the Warlord into the fight.

I wanted to try and hammer on the Predators and finish them off (as they are fast and shooty). I doubled the armoured company forward and managed to kill 2 more Predators with twin las-cannons. The Predators broke and headed back towards the Marine deployment area.

Eager to get at the Chaos army, the Landspeeders marched across the board. Unfortunately for Duro, he left them quite close to the Warlord and the Chaos Ordinatus opened fire hitting both formations (3 BM's for the titan and 4 for the Speeders).
Image

I marched one of the Iron Warrior Companies to set up a clipping engagement on the Landspeeders for turn 2.

The Raptor Tactical detachment got into a better position.

My remaining Decimator SHT drove into the woods (risking dangerous terrain) to try and finish off the broken Terminator stand. The Terminator armour was too strong and it stood defiant (all of Duro's Terminators were to prove VERY resilient throughout this game - gotta love reinforced armour).

The Thunderbolts stood down and were saved for the next turn.

My last Iron Warrior Company moved to surround the Ordinatus - there were still 2 more formations of Raptor Terminators to teleport in!

End of turn 1.
The Marine formations all rally.
The chaos Chosen scout marines fail to rally.
Image

Turn 2.
The 2 detachments of Terminators teleport in to attack the Chaos Armoured company and one of the Decimators (also near to the cluster of objectives so they would be in good position if they could survive).
Image

The strategy roll went to the Raptors and the Terminators wiped out both their targets with ease.
Image

I engaged the Raptor Landspeeders in the clipping engagment I'd set up in the first turn, winning easily. The broken Landspeeders retreated into a quiet corner of the board. Retaining, I doubled the other Iron Warrior company towards one of the Terminator detachments, killing one of them.

The Warlord Titan advanced and attacked the Decimator in the woods, doing a point of damage to the SHT. Retaining, the lone Terminator stand from turn 1 engaged the Decimator. The Chaos tank won the fight and the Terminator retreated again.

Now that the Raptor Terminators were all deployed, I could move my Terminators away from the Ordinatus. They doubled and placed another blast marker on the nearest, unbroken Terminator formation.
Image

Duro put his Thunderbolts on CAP... D'oh!

The damaged Decimator risked more dangerous terrain and advanced towards the Terminators putting another blast marker on them.
Image

The Raptor Tactical detachment marched towards the battle.

The Hellblades dived onto the Terminators I'd been hammering all turn. The Thunderbolts flew into CAP the chaos fighters. The Thunderbolts made it through the Obliterator and Ordinatus AA attacks unscathed but could only place a blast marker on the Hellblades. In turn, the Hellblades could only place a blast marker on the Terminators.
Image

The Raptors had activated everything so the Ordinatus looked for a juicy target. The Tactical detachment (which had the Raptors Supreme Commander in it) seemed a good choice. The Disrupt attack from the Ordinatus managed to score 5 hits on the formation but only one resulted in a kill (a dead Rhino). 8 blastmarkers (curse ATSKNF).
Image

End of turn 2 - all the Raptor formations rallied.
The Iron Warrior formations all rallied (I think).

Turn 3 strategy roll went to the Iron Warriors - ohhhh yeah!
My Terminators engaged the nearest Terminator formation with supporting fire from an Iron Warrior company. I lost one stand of Terminators but managed to win the engagement (thanks to Duro's amazing armour saves he only lost one stand aswell). Retaining, I engaged the other complete Terminator detachment with my other Iron Warrior company. The Chaos forces won the firefight engagment and wiped out the Terminators.
A great start for me!

The single stand of Terminators left from the first turn of the game, engaged my Ordinatus. The War Engine won the fight (thank goodness the Terminator couldn't get into base contact) and the Terminator was broken... again.

With the Warlord titan on my half of the board and bearing down on an objective, I could see it was going to be hard to win this turn. I didn't have the firepower to kill the titan and I could only slow it down. My Chosen Chaos marines moved forward to claim an objective and to get in the way of the Warlord titan.

The Raptor Tactical detachment moved and shot at the Chosen scout Marines for no damage (but leaving them with 2 blast markers - one off breaking).

My Decimator moved to claim an objective and tried to kill the pesky broken Terminator - no damage

The Warlord had to engage the Chosen scout marines to push them off an objective. It easily won and consolidated onto the objective they'd been holding.

My Hellblades dived onto the Landspeeders and killed one (broken, the remaing speeder headed back towards the Marine deployment area).

The Thunderbolts came on for a ground attack (I can't remeber their target) but one of them was shot down.

End of turn 3.
The lone Raptor Terminator rallied again. I think the other 2 broken Marine formations stayed broken.
The Iron Warriors rallied everything.
1:0 to the Iron Warriors (Take and Hold)).
Image

Onto turn 4.

At this stage, we realised it was going to go to points so it was a turn of doing as much damage as possible with what was left.
The stategy roll went to the Raptors and Duro sent the Warlord forward to destroy the Decimator SHT (it did this easily but it should be noted that the Volcano cannon didn't hit a single thing all game  ).
Image

The Ordinatus shot up the Tactical detachment and broke it.

The remaining Thunderbolt attacked an Iron Warrior company.
Image

The undamaged Iron Warrior company chased after the broken Terminator formation but couldn't finish them off.

The damaged Iron Warrior company chased the Tactical detchment but did little damage.

Nothing else really effected the outcome and with the Victory Goals at 0:0 we started counting up points.
The Raptors had scored about 995pts whilst the Iron Warriors totaled about 1400 points.

Another great game with a good mate.
Thanks Duro!

I'll have a think about my experiences with the Iron Warriors list and post them up soon.

Cheers,
Steve.

First time facing the IW list...i had heard & read about the Ordinatus when Steve used it against a Gargant list the other week and it had me worried...lotsa range with 10BP is nasty...really does make u have to think about deployment...which i screwed up as Steve mentioned...think the rush from not having to deal with teleporting termies over-rode remembering the capabilities of the Ordinatus...i think the greatest impact the Ordinatus had on the game was its psychological effect...it forces u to go against the natural tendency to keep ur forces together so they can support each other properly...cause u know if u do bunch up even slighty the stupid thing will rain death on u and u will be running out of blast marker tokens rather quickly...

few things i realised after the game...Steve was very tricksy with putting his fighters on CAP first (will remember that for next time Mr Steve :D)...wasnt aggressive enough with the titan and sent it the wrong way, should have moved it through my half of the table to threathen the cluster of objective markers and support the termies when they came in to smash the SHT & armoured company...but hindsight is a wonderful thing and who knows how Steve would have reacted if the warlord had swung the other way

the defensive nature of our deployments (rarely do i see Steve castle up like he did - usually so aggressive) and the grinder that evolved around the non-blitz objectives (and the ridiculous number of saves my Termies made) meant that neither side could secure victory goals very easily...also i was hastily running out of activations as well by mid way thru the second turn...

thanks for a great game Steve and next time I will see your Ordinatus and raise you Goliath Mega-cannons! :D

EDIT: think the IW need mobile AA - something to keep up with the armoured & mechanised formations...

Great report. Great IW too! Them and the WB are finally getting the love I think they really deserve. Curious about those mountains/cliffs though. Where'd you get them?
