I have normally seen Stormtroopers taken with Valkyries. I don't use them myself as I am usless with them. But I have seen them used to great effet by opponents.

For artillery I prefer Basilisks as a Company (in bigger games) and Manticores as Batteries. I regularly take 2 Manticore Batteries- I am not sure whether 3rd artillery Battery with basilisk will be as useful.

My previous regular opponent Colin used to take SHT Company of 3 Baneblades and SHT Platoon of 1 Shadowsword, like you have, and he got on very well with it. However personally I prefer taking SHT Company of 3 Shadowswords- if I have to make that TK shot then I can't rely on doing it with just one dice. For me IG are best with old Soviet maxim- everything counts in large ammounts (actually it may just be a Depeche Mode song lyric but either way sticks in my mind).

Call yourself a tank fanatic? i can't see a single Leman Russ in that list!! It is one of the iconic IG units. I don't leave home without at least one company.

My standard IG army has 6 hydras (1 battery and 3 upgrades) and 1 formation of 2 Thunderbolts. That seems to work ok but locally we don't overdo the aircraft.

Cheers

James

not a dissimilar build to the one I've been using lately....

my advice would be to drop the stormtroopers, 50 more points buys you an infantry company which is a much tougher prospect, if they're in cover with a commissar, they will be every bit as resilient as the stormtroopers and will be able to put out 7 autocannon shots, which when sustaining or on overwatch will actually give an opponent pause, right now I find my stormtroopers get a barrage dropped on them, which typically puts a few blastmarkers on them, killing a few and suppressing a few, then they get combined assaulted and wiped out in short order......

I'd disagree with James on the SHT front, in my experience, shadowswords main strength is how they shut down areas of the battlefield for war engines, I think a single tank has much the same effect (even bigger things like reavers will give them plenty of respect) and if you have multiple platoons they can fire on different targets and spread out to give more fire lanes.

Alternatively you could consider sticking a single shadowsword in the BB company to give an extra TK shot, the downside to that is that it reduces your baneblade's assault capabilities, and kind of dilutes their purpose, I find baneblades are awesome to steam in and assault, whereas you might want to hold them back more if they have the shadowsword....

if you dropped the stormtroopers and added a hydra and rough riders, I think it would be better..... I'd also consider dropping the snipers and an artillery battery and sticking a warhound in, right now you're looking extremely slow and will struggle to grab objectives, a warhound would be ideal to steam in and nab the blitz on T3

I'd also consider dropping the Reg HQ for a normal mechanised infantry company, then using the points for some sentinels to screen your artillery/blitz..... I've been experimenting without a supreme commander recently and it's very liberating, no more worrying about losing/wasting a re-roll :)

something along these lines:

Incompertus, 2975 POINTS
Steel Legion (NetEA Compendium 1.0)
==================================================

MECHANISED INFANTRY COMPANY [450]
Commander, 12 Infantry, 7 Chimera, Hydra

SUPER-HEAVY TANK COMPANY [600]
3 Baneblade, 2 Ogryns, Hydra

INFANTRY COMPANY [300]
Commander, 12 Infantry, Hydra

INFANTRY COMPANY [250]
Commander, 12 Infantry

ARTILLERY BATTERY [250]

ARTILLERY BATTERY [250]

SENTINEL SQUADRON [100]
4 Sentinels

SUPER-HEAVY TANK PLATOON [200]
Baneblade

FLAK BATTERY [150]
3 Hydra

THUNDERBOLT FIGHTERS [150]
2 Thunderbolts

WARHOUND TITAN [275]

I think also that with NetEA you can add single stands of ogryns/snipers to companies, so with the extra 25 points I'd either put an ogryn stand with one of your footslogging companies to bodyguard the commissar, or buy a stand of snipers to ride with the commander of the Mech Inf company....

it might be worth putting up a list of everything you have available..... I think stormtroopers are pretty good, but not for sitting on an objective.... I've been using mine as I didn't have enough other models to make a complete army, now I've got another infantry company, the stormtroopers will be getting some shiny valkyries to fly them around in style

Hi- yes I did realise that!

Personally my 3 IG Company choices are invariably Reg HQ, LR Co and SHT Co. kyussinchains is braver than me- I would feel nervous without safety blanket of SC re-roll.

From looking at your list of what you're missing, I would definitely recommend Sentinels if you can. They are useful as a cheap disposable formation and also good for scouting, either as garrison flung forward or to defend artillery. With 3 artillery batteries you will definitely need some Sentinels.

Cheers

James

I dropped the SC as I realised I was relying on the re-roll and an extra platoon of sentinels was a better option....

When I get my deathstrikes up and running I might be tempted, but for now I think the extra activation is more useful

I'd also echo the sentinels comment, they are very useful as a screen if nothing else!

if you have ogryns they fit so well with baneblades as an assault unit, 2 cc4+, 2 cc4+ MW, 9 ff4+ and a commissar makes a nasty assault unit....

other than that you should give the lists a few playtests to iron out the kinks....

I was about to mention the Ogryns witht the Super heavies...you can also hide them behind the war engines if you're being shot at.

Certainly cheaper than a tank squadron :-)! But, if the tank squadron fits your painting requirements then go for it!

I spent hours painting tanks last night, so much so that I've strained my neck and got an earache from tensing my jaw..... the prospect of doing my Ulani force terrifies me to my very soul! :)
