I really like your Vanaheim army, great job.

Warbarque progress. The rear tower is taller than the original, but I like it.

Mostly detailing left. Now, I'm thinking of the main and side turrets coming on a seperate sprue for ease of casting. Any other options people are interested in? Big gun for double use as Ghost Ark/Doomsday Ark?

I'm at a point where I need some advice from you moldmakers out there.

This is an side view of about where I am on the Warbaruqe right now. I've also added the guns to the front, but that's inconsequential for the purpose of this discussion.

Now, my question regards placement of pour channels (and overflow channels, if needed). I want to do this before detailing the rear tower so I can avoid destroying detail with the channel.

Here is my thought:
Image
The model would be placed in the mold with the face the pour channel (thick grey line) is shown coming off of parallel to the side the channel enters. I'd be doing a single pour, and cutting it open, so the approximate cut line would follow the thin black and grey line: from the reaemost point, running down the side of the body above the runners, then across the front of the model including where the cannon are now (grey section). THis would allow the mold line to avoid as much detail as possible for ease of cleaning, and orient the model in the mold so any air bubbles should flow up the pour channel. It would allow the top of the mold (from the point of view of the model) to be relatively undercut free, but require the bottom to be flexed out.

Watcha think?

I'd put the pour channel on the exact opposite side and have it on the 'lower' plane. Otherwise I think the rear tower may develop 'bubbles'.

I'd do something like this.

That is a pretty sharp looking mold plan E&C, those vents would really help and the 'invisible' mold line is pretty clever. Nice.

Well, I'll watch you to try to learn how to build dirty, you can watch me to learn clean.

Main body sprued up and ready to cast.

The three cannon sponsons should be the work of an hour or two tops, then I'll be ready to pour. Is there any interest in a big gun attachment to represent a Doomsday Ark, or should I let our more computer savvy friends deal with that?

Are you not going to add more details first?

What more would you add? I'm looking for the slab-sided look - the previous one had blank sides except the sponsons too. I could add more, but I'm not sure it would add anything to the visual appeal of the model. Also remember the sponsons will busy it up a fair amount:

Well, I'm as pleased as I can be while having no resin to test with. I'll have to get that tomorrow.

Looks like a nice clean cast: a few danglies that should come off in the first test cast or two, and some bubbles near (but not at) the surface.

Edit: BTW, Otter: this is OOMOO 30 when it goes right.

Well, I'm learning, and that counts for something. ::)

Bubbled too close to the surface; a couple broke, and I'm getting divots in the casts where the air expands. There are also a couple panels on the back that are trapping air. So, a new pour, and another couple vents, and we'll try again.

It occurs to me that it looks like I'm building a 1/300 scale Spruce Goose right now. It may prove fitting; I'm not sure this project is destined to fly.

Nonetheless, I'm pleased so far, even if it's early yet.
