I'm sure Dave will prove a capable Chair, but I'm a little annoyed that we've jumped straight from "expressions of interest" (with unclear provisions for who is eligible) to 3 roles being appointed without a single moment of public discussion.

Given how open and well-discussed all aspects of development are, it seems weird that we're not allowing any public input into the should be the most important decisions.

Did anyone other than Dave put their names forward? If not, surely a post along the lines of "Only one person has put their name forward, if noone else does he'll be appointed." would have been reasonable? And if other people put their names forward, why didn't we get a choice or at least the option to express our opinions.

This isn't an attack against Dave, and this isn't me wanting the position (I don't), but it's yet another back-room decision, which was the main thing people had problems with under the old system.

Good luck with this Dave. You've got my support.

As I recall, most of the people who showed any concern were moving AWAY from a democratic process for a variety of reasons, and that a model similar to selecting the previous NetERC was what was the most appealing. FWIW, this is how the NetERC was established in the first place.

All my ideas were shelved so I have concerns of my own (mainly related to ERC members burning out), but at this point I see nothing to be gained by complaining about the process. We needed a leadership structure in place, we have one, so let's move on.

I do suggest that Dave and the new ERC members make amongst their goals a process by which future ERC members are selected/elected/whatever, term limits, position descriptions, etc. Adding structure will be a good way to avoid this problem in the future. I had suggested this years ago and the warnings went unheeded. As much as I like bragging about being a prophet of doom, I'd prefer not to make any more gloomy (and accurate) predictions related to Epic.

I thought we were going to have a modicum of democracy this time around.

I refuse to break Godwin's law. Sorry, someone else is gonna have to do it.

*sigh* Seriously? Godwins Law? OK, how about this.... Dave was the only person to put his name forward for this. This is why there was no vote. He was the only candidate, and an appropriate one. Why would it matter to others how many people had volunteered for this? Either someone wanted to put themselves forward, or they didn't, and no-one was aware of even if anyone had, and it shouldn't affect their decision to do so. I fail to see how a 'only one volunteer so far' post would have had any affect aside from muddy the waters.

In addition, if any AC feels that they were held back by the fact that they are an AC and felt that this disqualified them from applying, please feel free to PM me within the next three days (by the end of Sunday). If there is anyone, we will work out a solution then.

The chair was appointed by a self-nomination system. The current NetERC members were asked if they wanted to continue, as there is currently no fixed term for a post. The remaining two posts are open for public volunteering.

Listen, guys, I am happy to take comments and feedback on this, and I don't expect to be able to please everyone here, but I am not sure exactly what kind of a system you are looking for, particularly given the outcry of 'its way more complicated than it needs to be'.

All people wanted was transparency.

It was a joke based on Zombo's over-reaction, not a serious accusation mate. :-)

Then, my apologies. Bro fist-bump? :D

Which is an entirely reasonable thing to want and expect. I have no problem with this goal, and support it. I should have mentioned on the appointment the lack of alternative candidates, and I apologise for this. While I admit that I am not error-free, I am attempting to keep things running and strike a compromise between forward movement, and open participation on an international forum. Its just that if I ask for feedback or ideas on how a process should move forwards, I will inevitably get six different suggestions, four pages of back and forth and a call for simplification.

Well, I am English, so I strongly believe in an individuals right to have a grumble every now and then. ;D

I have never censored posts which criticise or go against any decisions made or the boards in general. The site is made up of the people who visit here, and I am open to feedback and even criticism if it makes me see things from an alternative perspective and ends up being good for the site and therefore also for me.

Thanks for the clarification, it's all that was needed.

I'm now imagining CS as a tiger, curled up behind the Net-ERC throne, purring :)

;D For anyone unaware, I am a red head, which is about the only thing vaguely tiger-like about me!
