though you can hit the enemy deployment zone at the start of turn 1, while everything is fairly clustered. also, the spaceships use the big template. you can do a lot of damage against a horde army with a well predicted orbital barrage

This is one of the reasons for using corner deployments, which only permits 135cm x 15 cm deployment area, whereas the 'sides' deployment is 180cm x15cm. So you are removing 45cm worth of deployment area (or 1' 6" in old money), or around 25%. Obviously this can be a significant advantage as it tends to crowd things together, and also funnels the general direction of movement.

I have never had bombers, but I will be getting some very soon.

When I take whirlwinds it forces my opponent to spread out, but at the start of the game I'm still limited by range and what units I can fire on. At the same time, I need to devote a unit of scouts to surround and screen my whirlwinds to protect against an enemy air drop or teleporters. Maybe a unit of bombers could provide the same role without being limited by range and needing a unit to screen them.

If I include bombers in my SM forces, does that necessarily mean I can drop he whirlwinds?

Maybe. They're more likely to be unable to Acrivate for one or more turns, and are in many cases more vulnerable. I'd say try it, but they are probably better as a supplement than as a replacement.

Are the Space Marines a tough army to play?

Over the winter I put together a Black Legion Chaos army and even though I've only been playing a short time with them, my record is 50/50. My record in SM is nowhere near that good.

I like playing SM, they are my favorite, and I feel that my overall record with them should be better. The goal of playing Epic should be to have fun - and I do - but it would be nice to have a better record with them.

With the surgical nature of SM attacks, do other marine players find them an unforgiving army if you make a mistake?
