love the final charge of thunder child (war of the worlds reference maybe?) I think it could do with a description of how it finally met its demise, just a couple of lines would finish what is a great piece of narrative (best bit so far IMO) perfectly

looking forward to the imperator vs mega gargants..... I seem to remember back in the days of titan legions it was quite easy to win with the imperator, (armour saves on 2D6 meant you barely even needed void shields.....) provided you got decent plasma rolls of course....

There are a few War of the Worlds references in there. The name of the Titan, the fact that it's a human war machine fighting alien invaders in their own walking war machines, the melta cannon being referred to as a "heat ray", the Thunder Child going down fighting valiantly against overwhelming odds, etc.

I'm not sure we need to see the exact moment of the Titan's death... perhaps it killed a few more Gargants and Supa/Kustom/Mekboy Stompas before it finally fell! I'd like to stay vague there. :)

absolutely awesome, that's an incredible piece of work you've done there. hopefully there's enough left to read for a third happy coffee break.

I know it's not politic to bring stuff like this to GW's notice, but I think you'd do well to send this to someone at the Black Library, especially if you're interested in taking the writing side further.

I don't think I'll send any of my writing to the Black Library, but it's an honour that you'd think me worthy of it.

you're very welcome :) It reads better than a lot of the stuff they call "writing" at the Black Library and has everything a 40k fan could want; mass death, carnage, individual heroism and so on. Oh, and giant walking war machines :D

I'm thinking that to settle this encounter, I'll just sit down and play against myself or a mate with the forces (Orks using units from the Gargant Bigmob & Gazghull's Horde lists, Imperials using units from the Titan Legion & Knightworld lists).

ORKS:
Mega Gargant - 1050pts

Mega Gargant - 1050pts

Blitz Brigade (12 Gunwagons) - 350pts

Total : 2450pts

IMPERIALS:
Imperator Titan - 1250pts
Legate - 50pts
Sacred Icon - 25pts
Carapace Multilasers - 50pts

4 Knights Paladin - 300pts
1 extra Knight Paladin - 75

4 Knights Paladin - 300pts
1 extra Knight Paladin - 75

Total : 2125pts

That way if the Imperator dies, you can't blame me. :-p

I might pull Baron Harko out of the story at this section as there wasn't actually a Baron in the Titan Legions boxed set, just 10 normal Paladins. Also that'd help dramatic tension as we already know that the Baron survives until the end of the war, so taking him out of this fight puts makes the outcome more unpredictable to the reader. Think I'll do that.

Fought the battle, re-wrote the text to remove Baron Harko from this engagement, added two more pages of the story to the link on page 1.

On penultimate page, it says "Multiple Gargants and Kustom Stompas were lost to the Xenos". Should that be lost by the Xenos?

Love the combat between the big guys. Truly titanic!!

Thanks

James

Two more pages added.

And for those that want to know, here's a "battle report" of the Imperator vs. Mega Gargants battle. I'll probably write it up a bit nicer and put it in an appendix.

Knights Beta double, inflict 1 DC on Gork (6 left) with cannons.

End phase:
Gork rallies, 8BM left.
Riddle drops its BM, goes up to 4 voids
Both fires on Gork go out.

Orks go first.

Gunwagons double, inflict 4 hits on Knights Alpha, all 4 saved.
Gork tries to sustain, fails on a 4, SC on Mork uses re-roll to pass on a 5.
Gork fires BPMW guns, strips 3 voids (1 remaining).

Riddle removes 3 BM’s (2 left) and raises one void (6 left).
Gork rallies, dropping 7 BM’s (7 left).

Knights beta double toward Mork, hit Gunwagon twice neither of which are saved, Gunwagon(s) destroyed!

End turn 4

Mork rolls a 2, then a 1. Stays broken, retreats out of range (off board); Imperial victory!

Post game, I ran the fires just for fun to see what happened:
Fire does another DC. Fire does another DC. Fire starts 2nd fire, does another DC. 2x fires do 2x DC. 1 fire goes out. Fire does another DC. Fire goes out with 2DC remaining.

Nice batrep, cool scrap between Imperator and Mega Gargants- liked the way you described it. Enter the Black Templars. And a twist re Sun-Tzork and Gobgutz Badfang! Excellent stuff.

One quick question- is it Zzap or Zzapp?

Cheers

James

Thanks. :-)

I'm trying to use different perspectives for each battle. So sometimes I'm in "voice of god" mode and looking at the whole battle zone, and sometimes I'm in a "focused 3rd person" mode where I'm largely or entirely using a character's experience of the battle as our vantage point. Hopefully this is helping keep things interesting to read.

For the Imperator vs. Mega Gargants battle I thought it would be interesting to spend the time with the Princeps and some of his crew as they take on their many enemies, as "voice of god" would be a bit repetetive (since we've just had the last charge of the Thunder Child written in that style), whilst hanging out with the Orks would be difficult as I'd have to split the action across two different Mega Gargants.

Mind you, that kinda sets interesting idea in my mind for the supplement I write after this one... perhaps the story could be written twice, completely separately, from the vantage of two different antagonists...

I'll check and correct.
