Hello,

Our group just started playing Netepic after a long hiatus - we used to play Epic Space Marine back in the late 80s/early 90s.

Back then, you were limited to the number of detachments/companies you could take based on the actual number of cards in the set - i.e. I played the Imperial Guard, and therefore could only have 1 Bike Company, 2 Artillery Companies, 1 Abhuman Company, etc.

In Netepic, no such limit seems to exist - is that correct? For most units, it doesn't matter, but there are some units are great values for their points, and allowing an unlimited number seems like it could cause problems.

Thank you in advance,

Jake

Let me give an example:

A Guardian Storm Squad - a support card unique to the Ulthwe Craftworld, costs 200 points, and for those 200 points you get 4 Guardian Heavy Weapon stands, with no armor save, a morale of 3, with one shot, hitting on a 5.

For 250 points - only 50 points more - you get the same number of stands of Dark Reapers, that have a 5+ armor save, morale of 2, two shots hitting on a 4, and then also are Elite and have Quickdraw.

As far as I can tell, Dark Reaper support cards have no restrictions on them - so why ever take Guardian Storm Squads?

In the old game, if my memory serves me, you could only have 2 support cards of Dark Reapers, so if you wanted that third detachment of heavy weapons, you could pick up the Storm Squad as extra stands.

Unless, as I said, I'm missing something.

There is no restriction to Dark reapers
back in the days DR were limited cause you got only 5 models per pack :)
The Guardian heavy weapon squad has 2 Attack dice

There will always be units
which compared to others are cheaper/harder ect.
But each army has their own "cheap" units

Some units are limited though
e.g. only one per 3000 points

I'm not sure too about limitations on available cards.

If in the past old days you bought the Space Marine Box, Renegade extension box and then Titan Legions Box, you probably had more than 2 dark reapers support cards...

In the eldar codex, there's an optional rule about aspect warrior cards: 1 exarch card allows you to choose up to 2 aspect warriors cards.

There are some limits (Unique for example, need for company cards, minions for a GD), but for the most part army construction is quite free form. Take as many Dark Reapers as you like....I think you'll quickly find they are a liability giving up 3 VPs for only 2 infantry stands killed :)

There were never any limits on Dark Reapers or other aspects.....you did need to have 2 detachments of them before you could buy Exarchs though.

Hi!

Having such a large collection, i have played quite a few game with a "lot" of special/limited availability units.

I have found it doesn't make much of a difference. In some cases it may even hurt you, since you tie up a lot of points in some of those units.

In the end, given equal player skill, a well balanced army usually beats a "specialized" one.

In any event, try it out as many army card options and combinations as your collection will permit and let us know how it goes. ;)

Thank you for the responses.

Does anyone have a list of the actual cards that were in the 2nd Edition Epic Space Marine game? I think our group has decided to try and use those restrictions as they make more sense to us - removing the temptation of fielding munchkin armies :)

Playing Imperial Guard against Marines, at 3000 points, where the Marines take a balanced army of a Battle Company, an Assault Company, a Tactical Company, and then some detachments of Predators, Whirlwinds, Land Raiders, etc compared to an army that takes a Tactical, Heavy, Artillery, and 4 Bike Companies seems to pretty heavily favor the Guard.

And with the Orks, it is hard to justify buying Boyz when for the same point cost you can buy Shokk Attack Guns - and, since my friend loves The Kult of Speed and the Renegade Mekboy Mob, can have 10 detachments of them. If you put five of them attached to the Kult of Speed, and then use a Runtherd to join them, all 20 of them get +D3 to their CAF, and they start to get really nasty with their unlimited range. I'm not saying he would field all 10 detachments, but it isn't like it is expensive pointwise.

Anyways, I'm sure everyone has different feelings about this, and I'm not saying that the new system is unplayable, I just think we would be happier with the old restrictions, and it would be nice to know the actual number of cards in the set as opposed to trying to making it up on our own.

Thank you again!

Jake

Hi!

That's going to be hard to track down. I'll check the actual original boxes and rulebook for the listed contents, but my recollection is that they do not specify how many cards of each type there were.

There was a time I knew this by memory, but that was many years ago.

Hopefully some one else may have the answer, or a single set of cards which would make it easier.
