Hi, I have a series of buildings that I built myself. Its measures from 4cm x 8cm base to 8 cm x 8cm, with heights of about 12cm or more.
My question is: how to play with the miniatures in these buildings? they are not ruins and units can be placed on the roof.

thanks.
Sergi

usually we play it that units (infantry) can enter buildings. To mark them as being "in the building" we place the strips on the roof. In case of a skyscraper there'd probably fit a lot more units into the building then on the roof, but the roof is the limit with how we play.

Touching the bulding doesn't count as cover for us.

cheers,

Nice looking buildings
we also let any units in buildings have a 360 degree firing arc, not just the way it is facing.
On a side note, why does everyone paint there rooftops red?

Errr, do you allow vehicles and war engines in buildings?

I think that was "Any units inside buildings get a 360 deg arc." not "We let any units inside buildings. They get a 360 deg arc."

Yes, but do any infantry NOT have a 360 arc anyway?

In the UK tournaments we have a mix of buildings on bases and isolated buildings.

Where a base is included, the usual practice is to declare the entire base to represent ruins or buildings (depending on the models), blocking LoS. Touching the terrain provides cover to shooting (in the same manner as touching AV), but part of the unit has to be mounted on the base to gain the cover save provided by the terrain. The only inhibitor to shooting is that you cannot shoot more than 10 cms through this style of terrain.

Where there are isolated buildings clumped together (counting as one 'piece' of terrain towards the 12 for a table) they are treated as separate terrain features, thus allowing the possibility of firing through the gaps in between. Here, touching the building also means physically occupying it, so the unit gains the cover save provided by the terrain just by touching it. If touching (occupying) a building you can shoot through it, though whether you can shoot through other adjacent buildings that are separate is discussed during the 5 min warm up.

Note,
  • infantry touching (and occupying) a building or partially mounting a terrain base can nevertheless be picked up by transport without taking a DT test. However if the transport has to touch the building (or mount the terrain base) to get the infantry, then it has to take a DT test unless it moves cautiously (5cm) - Air transport always need to take a DT test if it touches terrain.
  • Infantry have always had a 360 degree arc of fire, so the only inhibitors to shooting are caused by buildings and ruins features described above.
  • We do not degrade buildings to become ruins through shooting (it is just too time-consuming in the tournament environment).
  • All the roofs are left their natural black rather than red.

Thanks to all,
In Spain, almost all the roofs are red.

Obviously..but generally if in a building they only shoot the direction they are facing. Normally due to LOS they would not.

SM2/Netepic(?) certainly limited infantry fire arcs when in buildings. As Ginger says in UK tournament games buildings are normally on bases and treated as built up areas or ruins. 4+ for inf and difficult terrain for vehicles where they can fit between buildings. Therefore inf can see 10cms in each direction into and out of the base.

Personally I actually like to define areas as Buildings to have a no go area for vehicles but most players prefer to play all such areas are ruins.

Seems like an odd way to play. A building should be pretty easy to tell in or out without making the whole block count as. Ruins maybe

Each style has benefits and issues:-
Treating a base as a single form of terrain simplifies many of the gameplay questions, and is arguably more accurate as built up areas contain a lot more than just buildings. Note the bases used are normally multiples of 10cm sq elements, so roads are represented by leaving a gap between two or more such bases. Also it significantly speeds up the logistics around setting out the terrain (which becomes much more important when you are dealing with a competition).

However, actually putting down the buildings, walls, out-houses and other stuff is more visually appealing, though interpreting the game-play situations (especially around LoS) can cause some problems unless it is discussed beforehand in the 5 min warm-up.
