I was going with the list E&C had concerns about. Do you have a 0.2.1 list you want me to try this weekend?

Edit: I thought about it some more. The IG list is virtually a popcorn list. It's 13 activations, all but 2 with ranged fire and most of them pretty tough. The slow formations have 45cm range and there are _6_ air/IDF formations that can put fire nearly anywhere on the board, giving it huge flexibility of firepower. The IG have a decent hammer with the HQ formation and the specialty tool of the Deathstrikes.

With 13 activations, even at 19 for the Nids, that's within the workable 3:2 ratio.

This really wasn't a popcorn test at all.

Sooo... you think this list is work-able or not? Is this actually an issue for Onachus? Besides a few notable exceptions, this playtest was virtually ignored.

As for the definition of popcorn: does one take into account the opposing list as well? I thought in labeling a list "popcorn" one only compares it to other lists generated from the same army (e.g. compare this 'nid list to other onachus possibilities).

I'm not sure. I can't say that there is a problem, but at the same time I can't help but think there is a vastly more effective popcorn style configuration. I would be concerned about something like...

8 Swarms
2 Biovore
2 Lictor (4 each, so one kill doesn't break them)
3 Harridan
2975, 15 activations - 13 on-board, 2 teleporters.

I really don't care that much about having 2 BTS in this case, but if it bothers you, you could take the 25 spare points, drop a lictor and upgrade a Biovore formation to 8 units. Otherwise, I'd probably throw a Gargoyle on one of the Harridans just for kicks. Or maybe change out a Harridan for a Trygon if you want a late-game Tunneler deepstrike.

Biovores and Lictors I mentioned above. The Harridans are better than the Trygons for a popcorn list because they are faster and have longer range weapons, allowing them to put fire where it's needed, but are still tough enough to hang in the game a long time (DC4, 5+RA, pop-up).

Again, I'm not saying that it's overpowered. It might be okay. I'm only saying I think it's better than what was tested.

I said it wasn't a popcorn test. I didn't mean that to be about whether the Nid list was popcorn. Popcorn lists are sometimes terribly unfair against a more typical tourney list. The reason I said it's not a popcorn test is that a 13 activation IG list is atypical and is not going to be susceptible to the popcorn activation advantage.

As far as a definition, popcorn generally just means cramming in huge amounts of activations, typically about 5 per 1000 points.

That by itself is not really a problem. In fact, most popcorn lists are just fine. It's when you can do that AND work in all the other traits needed to make a popcorn list work, which includes the tools needed to make a normal list work - some deepstrike, some MW/TK, and so on - that it is a potential problem. Even when you can do that, it isn't always overpowered.

If the snows hold off and we're gaming on Saturday I'll give that a shot or two then.
