I don't get it, I really don't.

I have been trying to get familiar with the E:A rule set so I can be be a dualie and maybe catch a game close to home. I just cannot understand the rules and Army set up. All of the BatReps up on this site seem to be about charging 75cm Turn 1 and CCing everything down and the game seems to be won on die rolls rather than good strategy. In addition to that, the army lists and army building make little to no sense to me as well. Am I just missing somethign or is that really what E:A is versus SM 2nd ed/NetEpic.

Sorry, not trolling, I promise! I am completely befuddled by E:A. I am a long time SM/SM2 player and gave up on e:40k too. I just can;t seem to get this game to click in my head.

Considering he just posted this: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=19320

...I don't think he's trolling!

=========

MadMag: Some things about E:A.

You're right that it is a game where units are much faster than you might be used to. However, that speed comes at a cost, as any formation that moves really fast will lose firepower and make itself vulnerable to counter-attack.

I wouldn't say that CC is the standard way to kill your enemies, indeed for most armies, compared to short range firefights it's quite rare!
However, ranged firepower in general is less effective than close engagements, especially for armies like Space Marines and Orks.

Epic is, at its core, a game about maneuver.

What rules don't you understand?

What about army setup don't you understand?

Can't you link to these BatReps you're looking at? What your describing doesn't sound like your regular game of EA.

What about the army lists and building makes no sense to you?

If you're specific, we can help you. But generalizations and absolute statements really does look like trolling.

But as E&C says, it's all about maneuvering. Maneuvering, terrain control and assaults.

That actually helped a good bit, I have been looking at it in the light of "old" epic where half the battle was getting in range and positioning your army to maximize its built in advantage.

So are you saying the armies are a bit less dynamic, but the focus is on more unit skirmishes than all out battle lines?

Dave,

I will focus specifically on Army creation, I haven't found anything anywhere that defines the structure of an army, detachments etc and they seem so variable list to list with multiple lists for the same army. Coming form the SM2 Company + Special + 5 support system, the E:A and e:40k systems don;t seem to have any structure I mean how do I convert a NetEpic Army to an E:A army and make the "structure" stick so I can go back and forth?

Here is an example from my Marine Army

Code:
Battle Company                 850
   Special)    Librarian       100
   1)    Veteran Detachment    300
   2)    Veteran Detachment    300
   3)    Bike Squad            150
   4)    Land Speeder Squad    200
   5)    Predator Squad        200
                           Total     2100

The SM, IG and Ork army lists are in chapter 6 of the rulebook. Is that what you're looking for?

It's the third one listed:

If you liked the old army cards someone did them up for EA:

If you are focused on the cards then EA would seem much more variable.

But if you want an SM2 battle company take a Tac detachment, a Dev detachment and an Assault detachment. Some of the sizes options have changed, but then GW keep changing how their forces are composed.

Then add a special, Titan for example.

Then 5 support so Termies, Land speeder, Predator, Whirlwind and bikes.

And an EA army looks like a SM2 army.

And remember in SM2 you didn't have to buy all 5 support per company, just you needed to stick to that formula.

Every army/race has their own army lists and each is organized in different ways. The "core" list of Space Marines, Imperial Guard, and Orks can be found in core rulebook .pdfs found on the GW website. This gives all the point values, units, and possible upgrades allowed and is your best place to start.

GW Epic Armageddon Resources.

The third pdf list above, "Section 6", has the basic army lists within.

Surely that's 2x Tac Detachments.

Well, lol it looks like I am missing half the rules :D :-[

big thanks on the army card site, I am a very visual person and that will help a bunch!

I will be back in a bit to talk tactics and gameplay, but I have my kids up for the week and I need to spend a bit of time with them, thanks so far!

The problem may stem from a language barrier, as this was a publication from the UK. <-- Now THAT's trolling! ;D

Seriously though, I had a difficult time picking up on the game just reading the rules. When somebody sat down with me and went over it, things made a heck of a lot more sense. The battle examples they have in the core book are great, but for me they only work if you literally lay out the pieces and follow along on a table top. Hope that helps!

There's a thread posted in the "Strategy and Tactics section that you might find useful. It discusses the parts of an army and the basics of what it needs to function, along with some basic strategy elements:
