Do you have a sharable source file for that pdf to use as a template?

Z, are you asking me or Apoc? The link I posted should be an ODT file (OpenOffice Document Tempalte).

That layout looks awesome Apoc.

Here's what Hena and I came up with using a Tex template...

Great thing about Tex is that the content is separate from both the layout and styling which means once the template is done, creating (or amending) a good looking doc is a breeze. Trouble is not many people know how to use Tex :( Anyway, interesting to compare :)

Adam77 that looks really good, i have not used Tex/LaTex myself but have seen some really beautiful things made in it (its always on my to do list over holidays...and i never do ??? ). If you and Hena get stuff moved out of MS office documents and into LaTex i think we are in for a treat :D

The example i showed is currently in Adobe InDesign, if you guys can use InDD then im happy to pop the file up. Aside from that i can try and do something in Word/Pub/Oo (not used pub/Oo in a while tho) which format do most people use?

Would a pack of background textures be useful as well?

This is what the LaTeX source for the above looks like...

Code:
\unit{Death Guard Havoc} {
   Death Guard Havocs are Death Guard Chaos Space Marines with
   a preference for killing at range with their powerful weaponry.
   Each Chaos Havoc's heavy weapon is a trusted ally of a thousand
   battles, its wielder completely familiar with its every operation.
   Together weapon and Chaos Space Marine touch every part of the
   battlefield with death and destruction.
}
\stats{Infantry}{15cm}{3+}{5+}{3+}
\weapon{Combi-bolters}{(15cm)}{Small Arms}{-}
\weapon{2 x Autocannon}{45cm}{AP5+/AT6+}{-}
\image{default.png}
\notes{Stubborn}
\statsEND

OK, I'm interested Adam77. So you need 3 files (layout, style, content) that compile to make the document? Hmm, might have to take a look at this in more detail.

Throw it up Apoc. If we do not have the program, I am sure some of us can get it through various nefarious channels :D

I'm using Publisher at the moment.

2 files, the 'content' file which looks like the above, and a 'macros' file which contains shortcuts for creating a codex (e.g. 'weapon' in the example above). The LaTeX program processes the content file and does all the layout/styling for you.

Having said don’t copy GW stuff, the GW datafax are not that bad aside from strange inconsistencies in places. These are the styles from the original EA rulebook PDF, NOT the (Hena’s?) updated one on the GW site now. If you do just copy it then you need:

Datafax entry title: Garamond, Bold, 12pt caps. The caps have been tracked out about 14%
Datafax fluff text: Garamond, Book, 9pt text with 10.7pt leading
Datafax table title: Garamond, Bold, 9pt caps The caps have been tracked out about 14%
Datafax table header rows: Garamond, Bold, 7.5pt
Datafax table entries: Garamond, 7.5pt text with 9pt leading
Datafax notes: Garamond, 7.5pt text with 9pt leading (bold/italic as needed)

Tracking value very approximate (PDf wont tell me, above is my best approximation), leading values also approximate.

In word you can set exact line spacing (what word calls leading) by going line spacing, line spacing options, set line spacing to 'exact' and type in the amount in points.

Word will not track letters by %, but you can expand letter spacing under font, character spacing, set spacing to 'expanded' and enter a value in points.

GW made the masters in Quark

---

InDD file packaged and linked, if you had InDD i think you'd know about it though ;D Not a specific template file but the page master is set up, so just add as many pages as needed.

Note: The fonts are NOT in the package due to copy write reasons, I used Adobe Garamond Pro, if you do not have this font you will need to change all of the paragraph styles to whatever version of Garamond/suitable substitute you do have. (but then if you can open this file, youve probably got this font anyway :D ).

The background textures were created in photoshop by combing and editing textures from http://lostandtaken.com/blog/tag/rust

File: datafax_example_hello_taccom.zip - 1.1 Mb

Hey Apoc,
Cheers for the very useful template – I've just got it open in InDesign CS4, and am playing around with some alternative backgrounds I made for a Space Hulk expansion a while back; If I get some spare time, I could source and create some species-specific backgrounds (i.e. organicy open source stuff for Chaos/Tyranid, metallicy stuff for Mechanicus etc.)

I've also tweaked the background layers to simplify the transparency, and added a slug line so it's easier to track changes. Speaking of which, I've dropped in some version notes outside the slug, and added in a v0.1 with your original. The only other change was correcting 'awesome' and 'hydra' – my editor sense was tingling! :D

Would you like me to add a bleed and adapt it for American A4? If you're planning a print run, American A4 scales up in price better, generally. :)

Feel free, the bleed etc was not set properly, this was just built over an old file i had from epic hive wars. Wasn't planning print run, just meant a fast example initially ;D

What did you do to the background (im eager to learn/get pointers) i can sort of see that having the transparent box over the texture etc is awkward but couldn't get it to work by just putting a transparency colour fill in the frame with the texture in it. Is there a better way to organise the fluff/'table' boxes? currently im just using offset/padding and then stacking them up manually.

I think a background pack might be a useful thing for the community. I took a load of pics for generating epic document tuxtures at some point and then never did anything with them, got some nice matted seaweed and barnacles that might get some interesting nid results.

:-[ ;) I have a particular blind spot for typos in capitals for some reason. I trust you found the other 2 copy mistakes as well :D (2 missing fullstops in titan notes)

What's the acceptable paper size when it comes to printing army list documents - say for a supplement? A4 or US Letter...?
