Hi everyone and thanks for the welcome.

I play mostly Epic, BFG and BB, with respectively IG, Imperial Navy and Humans. (I guess the fate of humanity weighs heavily on me).

I wrote the article, in which the fluff about the Tolkhan Forge World appeared, so it wasn?t actually so hard to remember.
If you?re interested I could try and find out if the file is still somewhere on my harddisk and send it to you. The article itself was about a historical refight.

Cheers

I should probably also point out that english is not my native language, so bear with me.
I?m from Denmark by the way.

Hi!

There are a lot of epic players in Denmark it seems, Ivan, who goes by the name "weasel" also hails from there.

Hmm, let's see: Epic Firepower #3 p. 68:
-Located in Segmentum Obscurus.
-Arrived to Khaldun sector in the first exodus and allied with the humans there.
-Annihilated with local knights two Exodite worlds when mistaking Dark Eldar attack an attack by the Exodites prompting the arrival of Riellen Craftworld 120 years later.
-At present engaged in battle to liberate Khaldun sector. Notable other forces: Harbringers chapter of Adeptus Astartes.

I am too lazy to type it all, so the above will have to do unless someone is more motivated than I.  :;):

Oh, and there's a nice pic of Mr. Bookworm in p.67.  :)

There are probably quite a few people out there who don?t have the old magazine, so here is the fluff bit from the article. The rest of the stuff was basically a scenario based on rules from the old Epic system (which sucks compared to the new in my humble opinion).
Hope you enjoy.

Tolkhan is a night world that orbits a small orange dwarf star and has a single moon called Rubicante. The inhabitants of Tolkhan appear very pallid because of the reduced illumination of their weak sun, which is the reason the Titan Legion took the name Pale Death.

HISTORY

When settlers from Mars arrived in the Khaldun Sector some 800 years into the first exodus, they found a region torn by war. A few systems were controlled by humans that had obtained the knowledge of space flight, but not warp travel. Two systems were Eldar Exodite worlds and some systems were orkoid domains. The Titan Legion quickly allied itself with the human worlds, brought their internal strife to an end and settled on one of their planets, Tolkhan. In the following decades the Orks were hunted down and destroyed and a peace treaty was signed with the Eldar, acknowledging the borders of  their worlds, Avalath and Kathlan. For many centuries this peace was preserved although it was unstable at best. The Tech-Priests of the Cult Mechanicus suspected the Eldar to harbour technological secrets such as the much coveted STC on their planets and the feudal masters of Tolkhan`s surrounding Knight Worlds had not forgotten their many wars against the arrogant aliens.
Then one fateful day some 120 years ago, disaster struck. From out of nowhere Dark Eldar Pirates attacked the Mining world of Zembrie, slaughtering thousands of defenceless workers, enslaving even more and destroying what they couldn`t take with them. Before Imperial Forces could retaliate, the Dark Eldar had left, leaving behind them, a wasteland filled with piles of lacerated bodies and smouldering ruins. When the news spread to the rest of the sector, there was a public outcry, demanding instant retribution against what was wrongly regarded as a treacherous act of war from the Eldar. The Imperial response was swift and brutal, the lush world of Kathlan was virus-bombed and left a barren rock in space. On Avalath every male, female and child were butchered and dumped in city-sized massgraves. The Techno-magi now had access to immense amounts of Eldar technology and archives filled with knowledge, whose secrets it would take years to uncover and catalogue. They ordered it all to be collected, dismantled and shipped to Ilnor where the Adeptus Mechanicus Research Stations were located. The Tech-Priests even suspected that somewhere amongst this enormous amount of material, they might find and unlock the doors to the Eldar Webway and the legendary Black Library. What they didn`t know was that, prior to the invasion, a message had been send deep into space. A message destined for the Riellen Craftworld that had originally settled the two Exodite worlds.
120 years later the response to the message arrived. The Eldar of Riellen attacked the Tolkhan Sub-Sector without warning and with a series of swift and ferocious strikes, they managed to conquer some 80% of the systems in the short span of only 6 months. It was only on Tolkhan itself and Celetin that the Imperial forces managed to hold on and repel the invaders. Although the systems were well-defended they were no match against the onslaught of a whole craftworld. While the attack could be seen as simple revenge for the wanton destruction of Avalath and Kathlan, the real reason was in fact to either recapture or destroy the stolen Eldar technology in order to prevent their secrets falling into the hands of the mon-keigh. The first system that fell to the Eldars were the Explorator Base of Ilnor, much to the consternation of the Tech-Priests.

PRESENT DAY

8 years have passed since the Eldar arrived and the Tolkhan Sub-Sector is now locked in a perpetual war. Imperial reinforcements have poured in from the rest of the Khaldun Sector, among them several companies of the Harbingers Space Marine Chapter and Tolkhan has begun the construction of several new Titan Battle Groups. The Eldar is concentrating on defend and hit-and-run tactics in order to buy time for their activities on Ilnor, which is still years from completion. So far the Imperium has managed to liberate 4 systems and has recently invaded the Eryx system. There have been a few attempts to liberate Ilnor, at the request of the Tech-Priests but they have all been repelled with heavy losses, as large Eldar forces are situated here.

I just made it up.
The scenario was a historical refight between Eldar and Imperial forces, so I figured there needed to be some background stuff to go with it.

Hi,

we had a number (>10) games with IG, Space Marines, Orks and (since last week) Eldar.
In all games except one involving the IG the IG army lost!!
After a game we usually swap armies and sides and play again with slightly different terrain, so different players lost with our IG army.

This is very surprising to me, as I had the feeling the IG army had some extremely powerful units: the leman russ, the artillery and rough riders.

The IG army varied from game to game but typically used:

1-2 tank companies (10 leman russ)
1 artillery company
1x3 or 2x3 hydras
2-3 rough rider units
1 mech inf company, sometimes improved with Ogryns & Hellhounds
some storm troopers (mostly in valkyrie proxies)

Usually the IG player used the IG army quite defensively, shoot as much as possible and firefight approaching enemies with the storm troopers, mechi infantry and the rough rider (40cm charge).
Most of the time the IG player not only lost by objectives (which would be explained by the rather defensive style) but his army was clearly broken and destroyed by the 4th turn (mostly by enemy assaults).

In our first games the artillery was quickly destroyed by enemy assaults (e.g. Space Marine drop pods) but since intermix the artillery with storm troopers (FF value) and screen it with rough riders it usually survives (but the Artillery, Hydras and the screen bind significantly more than 1000 points!)

I don't think the game is unbalanced, we are probably both playing the IG too defensively but I would like to hear your comments. Do you have similar experiences? Any good moves or other tips for the IG army? Do you play it offensively or also defensively?

thanks

Oliver

I usually play either 3 mechinzed companies each with the fire support upgrade. Or 1 Mech and 2 foot slogger if points are low. ?At a 3000 point game I add a tank company, two Hydras batteries, 1 rough rider, and 1 Thunderbolt formation.

In either case I set up a wall of firepower that when I get Assaulted gives me almost as many units in support as the target has assualting. at the same time the large units are very tough to break.

This force does not move well but you can't park in front of it.

I have not been the victim of Air assualt units yet, my opponent is working on his ork landa. But I have seen few formations that can take the punishment of two of my main formations firing into them. ?A Mech company plus fire support at 30cm has 33 AP5+ shots. ? ?

Don't be afriad to advance with the Mech forces. ?With a double move they have a 60cm movement. ?Combined with a 30cm shooting range they have a long reach. ?

Remember that objectives have no memory. ?I have found it very diifcult to throw enough units at the IG to break them without leaving behind objectives. ?

The IG have to play a waitng game. ?They have to deny victory while keeping their fighting strength intact.

I hope that helps good luck.

The IG are the best combined arms force in the game.  The have lots of FA/CAS, AFVs, and Infantry (plus Cav even!).  They should be the easiest Army to use.  They can take a some tactical bungling and bounce back because of their numbers and heavy tanks. As a combined arms force, they should be used on the offensive (L4 SoTR), based on mission of course.   Your comments appear sound to me C/C.  I like your use of Mech Forces( :;): ) with combined supporting assets !  Did your homework, I see ! :)

I don't believe in "Light" Infantry. :D

Airborne, Air Assualt, Air Cav, Storm Troopers, Scouts, Infiltrators,  etc.

They all mean the same thing...road blocks until the real army arrives.  The heavy forces; Mechnized and Armor spearheads.

Where's that book on Market Garden.
