QFT.

Black Library have put out two books dealing with Titan wars lately (Titanicus, Mechanicum), and like it or not they, along with the Forgeworld books which feature Titans, are the best source of info on Titans we've had in 15 years.

Thats true. Also Aaron Dembski-Bowden uses the stuff Dan Abnett "invented" für "Titanicus" and "Mechanicum". The way Titans behave and the language used he inlcuded in "Helsreach" too but improved on it imho. Also the way he describes how a Warhound Titan hunts his prey in "Soul Hunter" rocks :)

I think the picture he was painting was the Mod's are like the Executive Officer of the Titan and therefore capable of running the machine and preparing for there own command. Or at least that what i got out of it.

The losses the Titans sustain are just horrible if you take into account that they are very slow to build.

I think there a lot more salvageable from the field of battle then what we may think. They talk a lot about refits and repairing. How we think of a Titan dying just means going out picking up 60% of the machine and building from there?

Recovereing battlefield casualties and repairing them so that they can be resused is a thing Aaron Dembski-Bowden introduced in "Helsreach". There a Titan was killed and is described to be repaired to march again into battle.

After the shields go down the Titan just gets destroyed in the blink of an eye.

God-Machines just awake a more awesome image in my mind than Engine-War.

You don't have to agree but it is just my opinion.

In terms of casualties both books hardly depict normal engagements - AMTL civil war in one and an battle which is remarkes upon as being exceedingly rare in scale in the other.

Engine War is a fine title.
I think God Machines is far more dramatic though.

Perhaps calling titans and gargants 'gods' sounds cornie to our ears, and if we here where the first to call them that people would laugh at us and say it was cheesy!

But moving into the mindset of the orks or the superstitious inhabitants of Imperium, it's exactly right and not a bit naff!

I agree, part of the attraction of the setting is often to do with how relentlessly stupid it is.

Yeah it's super ironic How relentlessly stupid we all where, back in the day. And still are!

50,000 tonne giant battle robots are nothing if not stupid, and awesome at the same time.

It's like 1984's doublethink, only not quite so creepy.

As a Christian, I personally would have a problem with it being called God Machines, but am very aware I'm in the minority of people who would think this! :)

Deus Mechanicus then

Naturally, we're using god in the sense of god with with a lower case g, not uppercase, which shouldn't offend any Monotheist types.

That's just "God of Machines" in Latin. ::)

Being conversant with the 1st through 3rd commandments of the Judeo-Christian tradition*, I'm confident that we won't be breaking any of those commandments by naming it "God Machines" (If we chose that title).

*And indeed, knowing how poorly translated from the hebrew source the 3rd commandment is in most English versions.

True, I guess you're not using it in a blasphemous way. I withdraw my concern :)

Still, it's a worthy concern to raise, and one we should be aware of.

Cheers.

Honestly, 40k does refer to titans as God-Machines, to the emperor and c'tans etc as gods etc etc.

Anyone who has a serious relgious problem with that probably shouldn't be playing any GW games. It's not epic specific.
