Don't forget, all Imperial/age of expansion cities were made to STC's,then as mentioned built on and expanded over the centries.

Imperial Govorners can do as they wish and their tastes vary. Also, prior to that many non imperial worlds had their own arcutechture. The crusade didnt destroy them all did they ?

Nice work! I'll see how I could help with the number of buildings.

I suppose that's one reason I ask. Many E40k cities I see don't look like hives, they look like parking lots, or maybe Tianamen square, without the square.

Of course I'm particularly struck by these 'urban environments' because ASL accustomed me to very short Lines of Sight in cities... contrary to the dynamics of an E:A game, where it is almost impossible to skulk successfully.

E.g. the skulking land raiders in Hena's picture above can be seen fairly easily by a unit that doubles or moves laterally to catch a diagonal shot.... not to mention that the comparative weakness of opp fire tends to encourage that kind of manuever.

NB, I don't mean to be critical of the modeling, Hena -- these are great foundations for a city fight... it's just that I'm perplexed by how sparse many EA 'cities' seem to be.

That's mainly because the lack of enough buildings. That's almost all that I have at the moment, so I have to spread them out. Next step would be to somehow construct a 100 or so buildings :D

I've been trying to figure out how to use the nice DRM blisters: square and fairly high, just missing outside detailing. Hmm... Maybe I'll glue strips of cork to the sides...

Yeah, I think that's a big reason that so many Epic battles are fought on vast plains. Good buildings and ruins come at such a premium it is hard to fill an entire table. It isn't the easiest thing to make good looking buildings either.

I was able to play a game this weekend that had a good amount of buildings and ruins on the table, and, being a Guard player, found it to be quite enjoyable. Being able to take advantage of cover is a good thing.

This is one thing I am working on diligently in my own battlefields. I want to have "more" terrain, not less, and am slowly working on it to be as good looking as possible without going overboard. I am making 4"x4", 4"x8" and even L-shaped bases in 4" increments so my cities can be quite modular. Your tiles above are inspiring but I think beyond what I can do.

Just FYI, there are some nice cardstock building files at http://sarna.net/files/media/cardstock/. These are to battletech scale, (6mm) and http://cf.sarna.net/media/cardstock/city_set_1.pdf has the plus (or minus) of having a good amount of personality: witty billboards and shop signs... if it doesn't offend your sensibilities to have your 10 foot tall genetically altered SMs fighting the Eldar for a Wells Fargo building...

NB.... I'm not convinced that the printed cardstock is as economical as it might seem... but it could be one way of getting a lot of buildings on the table fairly painlessly.

Hey, those look way easier to put together than the Dresden Frauenkirche.

This is where a color laser printer is your friend. You can pick them up for under $200 nowadays (mine cost around $150) and they don't cost nearly as much when it comes to toner vs. inkjets.

the best way IMHO is to print it in a copy/print shop.
You can have fancy paper/cardboard/transparent sheets printing and all.

Not as fancy but the most cost effective by far : print at your workplace :)

Both of those solutions seem good ones -- the color inkjet printer is a major money sink.
