I'm sure this has been talked about many times, particularly when the Tau first appeared.....I've never seen anyone talk about it though.

I'm starting a Tau army for Epic and I found myself wondering why the Tau don't have Titans. I understand that the Manta is suppossed to take the place of a Titan for the Tau, but you would think for a race that has excellent, and large, armoured suits and similar technology that the Tau would've been a prime candidate for some fantastic bipedal Titans!!!

It really makes me want to buy a 40K Crisis or Broadside suit and turn it into an Epic Titan for the Tau.

My imagination conjures up some absolutely awesome images of Imperial, Eldar, Ork and Tau Titans blasting away at each other on the battlefield.....

What model do you think would best represent an Epic Tau Titan ?

Yea, I dunno, some things just don't need to be done for flavour's sake - the Manta is a great substitute for the Tau "titan", but I think if anything were to look "Tau titanish" it would be something in the battletech or gundam range - it is afterall what Granny White "borrowed" the idea from.

Not titan size but have you seen this giant 40k battlesuit? http://www.coolminiornot.com/231208

I thought, fluffwise, Tau don't have titans as they haven't managed to scale their battlesuit technology up that far and, with their excellent super-super-heavy skimmers, there is no pressing need.

Personally, I like the uniqueness this brings, and the fact that the Tau, always as a resource disadvantage against most of their enemies, have shown you don't need dedicated sky scraper sized bipedal robots, but instead can just use small spacecraft to fill the same roll.

Also, countering titans by deploying spacecraft to the battlefield is just balls-out awesome.

As a design philosophy, GW has been moving away from "titans for everyone" for quite a long time. If Jervis had had his way, the Black Legion list would have had no chaos titans. The titans were a late addition as a concession when it became clear that the new war engine/daemon engine models would not be produced. Necrons were also given strict instructions that giant walkers were right out.

Well the Tau used to have a small titan equivalent in the Moray.
In it's final guise, after just about everyone agreed on the stats for it, it would have been a great addition to the list. Unfortunately, it was axed because a few people reviewed the list and really didn't seem to get what the Moray was for.

The list has moved on since then but if the Moray was ever to make another appearance, I'd support it inclusion (what else am I going to do with the 2 Moray's I have sitting in the dispaly case...).

The moray was IMHO removed because:

- It was forming the lynchpin of every single successful Tau list build (Not something a non-canon unit should be doing).
- It was very overpowered.

I too would like to see it return, in its proper place: A Tau "Armoured Variant" army list.

A damage capacity 3 skimming Shadowsword. More or less.

Sometimes an army is made more characterful by what it lacks then what is has...IMO.

Indeed, I think the Tau army is much more interesting to play with/against without cheap access to long range skimming Titan Killer attacks.

I'm sure that you can remember that the final incarnation of the Moray did not have Titan Killing attacks.
It also had it's critical improved to instant kill (from only losing it's shield before).

All up, it was nowhere near as nasty as it was in previous lists and that was a good thing.

Well, as said previously, I do think it would be interesting to have in a more armour-focused army list variant. This is something I would like to see started on ASAP after the Tau list is finalised (Which is apparently just 1 or at most 2 revisions away).

As you'll remember, I only supported removing the Moray from the core list if it was to find a new home in a variant armour-focused list.
